Range of motion (ROM) refers to the extent and direction of movement that a joint can comfortably achieve. Nurses often perform ROM exercises with patients to maintain joint flexibility, prevent contractures (abnormal shortening of muscles), and improve mobility, particularly for patients who may be bedridden or have limited mobility.
