Bea M. always felt in her heart that her life purpose was to help people. However, initially, she stayed away from nursing, wanting to forge her own path. As a child, she observed her mother and aunts working as nurses after arriving in the U.S. from the Philippines. Bea went on to try acting, dancing, music, sports, and social work before realizing nursing was her true calling. In March 2024, she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from 国产主播鈥檚 Los Angeles campus.

Growing up in the suburbs of the Bay Area, Bea recalled the pressure to succeed. 鈥淎s children of immigrants, there was a lot of competition with one another,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was bullied a lot as a kid. I didn鈥檛 pick up things as fast as the others. I thought maybe I wasn鈥檛 smart enough to be a nurse.鈥

After working in social work, Bea determined it was not the career for her. She decided to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. 鈥淚 did some searching within myself,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith these new experiences and meeting people from all over the world, I gained a new perspective that I should give nursing a try.鈥

After returning, she began a vocational nursing program just as the world entered the pandemic. Afterward, Bea recognized that nursing had been her path all along. 鈥淭hat was the first time in my entire life that I finished something with academic honors, and I realized that maybe I was actually good at this,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 made it this far — I might as well continue.鈥

While working at an acute psych clinic, Bea applied to the LVN to BSN program at WCU. 鈥淚 moved out here with just luggage and couch surfed until I finally got an apartment and job that I could balance with my schoolwork.鈥

Throughout the program, Bea said she faced imposter syndrome. 鈥淏ecause of my past being bullied, I struggled a lot with my mental health,鈥 she shared. 鈥淏ut as soon as I started nursing, I felt like this was the way I could make a difference.鈥

Bea quickly bonded with her fellow classmates and faculty. She particularly appreciated her time with Professor Jennifer Uebe. 鈥淲e still keep in touch to this day. She inspired me to be more confident in my clinical decision-making and to stand up for myself,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淪he always treated her classes as a team sport. I was used to doing things on my own, but knowing there is a team behind you helps so much.鈥

Today, Bea works as a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at a Southern California hospital. She described being proud she has made it this far, noting that her mother worked in the same unit and specialty. During harder moments, Bea has been able to lean on her mom through their shared experience. 鈥淭he first time I ever lost a patient, I remember going to my car and crying, and my first thought was to call my mom,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淢y mom told me, 鈥楧id you do everything you could? Did you give it your all?鈥 I said yes, and she said, 鈥楾hen that is enough.鈥 It gave me a sense of peace. Especially in this career and unit, that is it. We do our best. We give it our all. At the end of the day, that is all we can do.鈥

Bea is proud of her status as a WCU alumni. 鈥淚鈥檝e met a lot of coworkers and whatnot who were also WCU nurses or alumni, and they鈥檝e always been the best people to work with in my experience,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淭o be one of them and to hopefully carry on that same care is to embody the pride and reputation I’ve been given.鈥

How Are Occupational Therapy and Nursing Similar?

Considering a career in occupational therapy or nursing? Though it may not be immediately obvious, these fields overlap more than you might think. Both occupational therapists (OTs) and nurses work closely with patients across diverse healthcare settings, and their roles are more similar than they are different.

While the educational and certification paths to enter each career can vary, occupational therapists must graduate with a degree (such as a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy) from an accredited institution to be eligible for the much in the same way that prospective nurses must graduate with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.

Since both professions play crucial roles in clinical settings, understanding their unique responsibilities and qualifications will help you make an informed decision as to which path could be the right fit for you. Keep reading to explore the overlaps in occupational therapy and nursing including responsibilities, educational requirements, and more.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy involves helping individuals of all ages with moving through day-to-day life. Most OT patients face challenges that affect their ability to care for themselves, work, or socialize with others. Therapies can range from play-based activities for children to adapting to assistive technologies and equipment like mobility aides.

There are a few different roles within occupational therapy, including occupational therapy aides, occupational therapy assistants, and occupational therapists.

According to the , both occupational therapy assistants and occupational therapy aides assist occupational therapists with administering treatments and procedures to patients. OT aides generally require a high school diploma, while OT assistants require a minimum of an associate鈥檚 degree along with a state-issued license.

Occupational therapists, on the other hand, can perform the duties of both occupational therapy aides and assistants because they undergo more education and specialized training, typically through a master鈥檚 degree program. This allows them to develop treatment plans, evaluate patient progress, and provide comprehensive services independently of aides and assistants.

Occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants work together to carry out the treatment plans that occupational therapists develop, making recovery a collaborative effort.

What is Nursing?

Much like the field of occupational therapy, there鈥檚 a wide range of paths you can take in the field of nursing. Nurses play a central role in patient care as they often serve as the primary point of contact for most patients.

Some common paths for nurses include certified nurse assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).

Similar to occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants, registered nurses work under the supervision of other nurse professionals, typically under a nurse practitioner. However, while both registered nurses and nurse practitioners work to oversee patient health and treat patient needs, only nurse practitioners can develop treatment plans and diagnose acute illnesses.

Nurses can also take on more advanced nursing roles by pursuing different specializations, such as adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP) or nurse leadership.

Occupational Therapy and Nursing: Job Roles and Education

On paper, occupational therapy and nursing may appear as distinct professions鈥攂oth with their own unique responsibilities, educational requirements, and scope of practice. However, because occupational therapy centers around the care of others, it often overlaps with nursing through its shared emphasis on patient advocacy, emotional support, and teamwork.

The sections below outline the key aspects of each career to help give you a clear understanding of their responsibilities and educational requirements.

Job Responsibilities for Occupational Therapists

For occupational therapists, every aspect of their job is dedicated to helping patients regain the skills needed to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. As a result, they鈥檙e focused on a targeted niche in healthcare.

They work with individuals facing physical, mental, or emotional challenges due to injuries, illnesses, or disabilities. While they collaborate with doctors and other healthcare providers, occupational therapists take the lead in designing and guiding personalized treatment plans.

Here鈥檚 a closer look at :

  • Evaluate patients to assess their needs and determine the best path to recovery.
  • Empower patients to navigate daily challenges, from self-care to social reintegration.
  • Develop personalized treatment plans focused on helping patients achieve specific goals.
  • Guide patients through therapeutic activities to improve physical, cognitive, or emotional skills.
  • Teach patients how to use adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, grab bars, or hearing aids.
  • Oversee occupational therapy assistants and aides to ensure treatment plans are properly carried out.
  • Educate family members and caregivers on strategies to support the patient鈥檚 recovery and promote independence.

Job Responsibilities for Nurses

Nurses are healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care, monitor health conditions, and make sure that treatments are carried out safely and correctly. They typically work across a large , and their responsibilities can vary depending on not only their educational background but also the department in which they work.

Similar to occupational therapists, they collaborate with teams to deliver exceptional care and ensure the well-being of their patients.

Here鈥檚 a closer look at a few of the :

  • Perform diagnostic tests and assist with interpreting results to guide treatment decisions.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families during challenging or stressful situations.
  • Monitor patient health and record symptoms to track changes and report concerns to the care team.
  • Record and maintain medical histories to ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation.
  • Respond to emergencies by providing life-saving interventions, such as CPR or stabilizing care.
  • Educate patients and their families about their injuries, illnesses, recovery plans, and preventive care.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess patient needs and develop effective care plans.
  • Administer medications and treatments prescribed by doctors to manage pain, treat conditions, and support recovery.

Education Requirements for Occupational Therapists

To become an occupational therapist, you鈥檒l need a master鈥檚 degree in occupational therapy, which generally includes advanced training in patient care and treatment planning. Before enrolling in a master鈥檚 program, you must complete a bachelor鈥檚 degree in a related field, such as biology or health sciences.

However, some Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs, like WCU鈥檚 program offered at the Center for Graduate Studies in Los Angeles, don鈥檛 require you to hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree. The program can be completed in as little as 24 months and involves a combination of on-campus instruction and online learning.

If you don鈥檛 hold a bachelor鈥檚, you can qualify for the MSOT program if you meet these requirements:

  • An active occupational therapy assistant license
  • 1 year of work experience as an occupational therapy assistant
  • 3.0 GPA on prerequisite courses from an accredited university within the last ten years

Courses you鈥檒l take in a Master of Occupational Therapy program will cover topics like anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation techniques, how to provide patient care, neuroscience for occupational therapy, and how to perform occupational therapy assessments for children and adults.

Both the academic coursework and hands-on components conducted through fieldwork in the program also prepare you to pass the , which is required to practice as a registered occupational therapist.

Education Requirements for Nurses

Registered nurses typically earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing (BSN) or an associate degree in nursing (ADN). Many healthcare organizations prefer nurses with a BSN, while in some cases, it鈥檚 .

Nursing programs combine clinical training and theoretical knowledge to help prepare students for direct patient care and specialized roles while also equipping them with the knowledge and experience needed to pass their licensure exams.

Common courses you鈥檒l take in a BSN program include topics like pharmacology, pathophysiology, disaster management, and fundamentals of nursing practice.

Is Occupational Therapy or Nursing Right For Me?

Choosing between occupational therapy and nursing is a personal decision that depends on your interests, goals, and the type of patient involvement you prefer. Take the time to reflect on a few of these questions to determine which path aligns with your goals:

  • What kind of impact do I want to have on patients鈥 lives?
  • How much time and energy am I willing to invest in my education and career development?
  • Am I more interested in hands-on medical care or guiding patients toward greater independence?
  • What type of environment do I see myself working in (e.g., hospitals, schools, clinics, or rehabilitation centers)?

Occupational therapy and nursing might be ideal career paths for you if you identify with some of the following skills or traits:

  • Are patient, empathetic, and driven to improve the quality of life of others.
  • Care about helping people restore independence and build confidence.
  • Are highly adaptable and comfortable working with diverse populations in different settings.
  • Have excellent communication skills when working with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Enjoy solving problems and coming up with creative ways to help people achieve their goals through personalized care plans.

If you find meaning in empowering others through daily activities and building their independence, occupational therapy may be your calling.

In fact, occupational therapy can be ideal for those who have a passion for patient care but seek additional career opportunities in areas like rehabilitation or personalized treatment planning. You’ll also get more one-on-one time with patients as an occupational therapist, allowing you to focus deeply on their individual needs and goals for recovery.

For many, the path to nursing is more than just a career choice 鈥 it’s a calling shaped by personal experiences and a desire to make a difference. Evelyn Z., a nursing student at 国产主播 in Richardson, Texas, embodies this journey.

A Childhood Spark

Evelyn鈥檚 passion for nursing ignited at a young age. Her mother, a certified nursing assistant, often brought her along to visit patients in nursing homes. 鈥淚 remember being 6 or 7, walking into those rooms and seeing patients who didn鈥檛 have family around, especially during the holidays,鈥 Evelyn recalled. These early experiences planted the seed for her love of caregiving, inspiring her to pursue a career in nursing.

But nursing wasn鈥檛 just a childhood whim; it was a shared dream. Evelyn鈥檚 mother, who emigrated from Mexico City, had once aspired to be a nurse herself. Unfortunately, language barriers prevented her from achieving that goal. 鈥淪he was always supportive,鈥 Evelyn shared. 鈥淚n a way, I feel like I鈥檓 fulfilling her dream as well.鈥

The Leap of Faith: Moving to Texas

Evelyn鈥檚 journey to WCU was far from linear. Originally from San Diego, California, she faced numerous obstacles while applying to nursing schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many programs in her area were either paused or not accepting new students. Determined not to let these setbacks deter her, Evelyn expanded her search to other states.

Texas stood out, not just because her sister was planning a move there, but because of WCU鈥檚 program. 鈥淚 needed a flexible schedule to work while attending school,鈥 Evelyn explained. 鈥淲CU offered that, and it was a game-changer.鈥

With the support of a helpful admissions advisor, Evelyn made the bold decision to move to Texas. Leaving behind her family, friends, and the familiar comfort of California, she embarked on a new chapter, driven by her goal of becoming a nurse.

Building a New Community

Transitioning to a new state wasn鈥檛 easy, but Evelyn found a sense of belonging at WCU. 鈥淭he community here is incredible,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e made close friends who share the same goals, and the school is so student-centric. They really listen to us and make adjustments based on our feedback.鈥

Though she misses her family and the beaches of San Diego, Evelyn has discovered new joys in Texas, including its vibrant coffee shop scene. Balancing school, work, and time with her church community has kept her grounded and focused.

A Passion for Patient Care

Evelyn鈥檚 clinical experiences have solidified her love for nursing. Guided by compassionate professors, she has honed her skills and gained confidence in her abilities. 鈥淥ne clinical professor, in particular, really changed my perspective,鈥 she noted. 鈥淪he explained procedures in a way that made everything click and emphasized the importance of patient-centered care.鈥

Initially drawn to labor and delivery, Evelyn is now exploring other specialties like emergency nursing. 鈥淚 love the fast-paced environment,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut wherever I end up, I know I want to bring comfort and hope to my patients.鈥

Advice for Aspiring Nurses

For students considering a move for their education, Evelyn鈥檚 message is clear: 鈥淒on鈥檛 let fear hold you back. If nursing is your passion, take the leap. The experience will not only shape your career but also your confidence and resilience.鈥

Evelyn plans to return to California after graduation to be closer to her family, but she will carry the lessons and experiences from Texas with her. 鈥淭his journey has been life-changing,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淚鈥檝e grown so much as a person and as a future nurse.鈥

After 18 years as a dental assistant, Chanel A. was ready for a change. She wanted to make a bigger difference, combining her passion for healthcare with a desire to impact communities on a broader scale. In 2020, just as the world was grappling with the pandemic, Chanel found herself drawn to 国产主播鈥檚 Public Health program. Originally starting in nursing, she quickly discovered her passion lay in public health, especially with a focus on epidemiology.

When asked what drew her to 国产主播, Chanel highlighted the ease of the application process and the supportive environment. She felt encouraged to pursue her goals, knowing that the faculty and network of support at WCU were there for her.

鈥淎t 国产主播, you learn resilience,鈥 she said

Chanel explained that the fast-paced nature of the program taught her to learn from challenges, build strong study habits, and develop the time management skills essential for success.

Despite the inherent challenges of an online program, Chanel never felt alone. She connected with faculty who were always just a message or Zoom call away, ready to provide guidance and support. She joined the African-American Association, which helped her connect with her community and solidify her aspirations in global health.

Graduation day was a moment of pride for Chanel. Supported by her family and even an ex-partner who came to cheer her on, she stood on the cusp of a new chapter, excited and hopeful. Next spring, she鈥檒l begin her master鈥檚 degree in Global Health at Cal State San Marcos, a step closer to fulfilling her dream of working in underserved communities around the world.

For those considering 国产主播 or an online program, Chanel鈥檚 advice is simple: 鈥淢ake sure you have a strong support system and understand that it will take sacrifices. You might not see your friends as often, but in the end, it鈥檚 worth it.鈥

At 国产主播, the journey from classroom to career is a transformative experience, and no one understands this better than Dianna L.,聽our Career Services associate director at the Orange County campus. With a passion for student success and a background in HR and recruitment, Dianna has dedicated the last four years to helping students not only achieve their career goals but also discover their “why” in the healthcare field.聽

A Passion for People: From Recruitment to Career Services

Dianna’s journey to 国产主播 began in the healthcare recruitment industry, where she connected with aspiring nurses and healthcare professionals. Her role allowed her to delve into the personal stories of candidates, understanding their motivations and aspirations. This interest in people鈥檚 stories is what drew her to a career in Career Services at 国产主播.聽

“I was always interested in getting to know the candidates’ stories and understanding why they became nurses,” Dianna explained. “When I learned about what 国产主播 does to prepare its students for the job search, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”聽

Transitioning from recruitment to Career Services was a natural fit for Dianna. It allowed her to continue her passion for guiding individuals on their career paths while also playing a more direct role in their professional development.聽

“I love getting to know all my students, learning about their journeys, and helping them with the skills they need to excel in their interviews and job search,” she said.

The Heart of Career Services: Understanding the Student’s “Why”

For Dianna, one of the most rewarding aspects of her job is understanding each student’s unique reason for pursuing a career in nursing.聽

“Every student has their own story, often rooted in personal experiences,” she shared.

Whether it’s a former CNA who discovered their calling through hands-on care or a volunteer who found their passion in the hospital setting, these stories are what drive Dianna to provide the best support possible.聽

She emphasizes the importance of helping students articulate their “why” during the job search process.

“Employers want to know why a candidate chose nursing as a career, and it鈥檚 our job to help students convey that passion in a way that resonates during interviews,” she explained.

From Student to Professional: A Journey of Growth

Dianna described Career Services as the “endpoint” in a student’s journey at 国产主播, where all their hard work culminates in landing their first nursing position. This journey is often filled with emotions 鈥 nerves, excitement, and a sense of achievement.聽

“It’s incredibly rewarding to receive that call or email from a student saying they’ve received an offer,” Dianna said. “Seeing their growth from their first day in nursing school to the moment they accept a job offer is one of the best parts of my role.”聽

She takes pride in the fact that her team is there every step of the way, from preparing students for interviews to celebrating their successes. But Dianna is quick to remind students that their success is ultimately due to their hard work and determination.聽

“I always tell them, ‘It was all you.’ They put in the effort, excelled in school, and presented themselves well during interviews,” she added.

A Collaborative Culture Focused on Students

What makes 国产主播 truly unique, according to Dianna, is its student-centric approach.聽

“Every decision we make in Career Services is with our students in mind,” she said.

Whether it鈥檚 planning workshops, organizing employer events, or providing one-on-one support, the goal is always to enhance the student experience and prepare them for success in the real world.

This student-centric focus is supported by a collaborative culture across all campuses. Dianna highlights the teamwork that exists not only within the Career Services department but also with other departments like Student Affairs, the Nursing department, and the NCLEX team.聽

“We all have different roles, but at the end of the day, we work together with a common goal: our students,” she explained.

Laureen S., MSN 鈥23, first discovered her passion for nursing while watching the popular TV series 鈥淢*A*S*H.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 the only thing I ever wanted to do,鈥 Laureen shared. 鈥淚 loved the physical sciences and wanted to be a surgical nurse like Margaret Houlihan.鈥

After high school, Laureen attended college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1987. Her subsequent 37-year career spanned numerous technological advancements, a global pandemic, and multiple nursing specialties.

Laureen’s first job was in the medical oncology unit, where poor nurse-to-patient ratios and grueling night shifts made her question her career choice. She then moved to the step-down unit of the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), where she discovered her calling in cardiac care and patient education.

Her career continued as she worked in the ICU, home health care, and the adult critical care unit’s flow pool. Eventually, she transitioned to the NICU, where she found her true passion for neonatal care and spent 20 fulfilling years.

鈥淢y mom had always wanted me to be a pediatric nurse and I never had any interest, let alone in babies,鈥 Laureen recalled.

Laureen went on to work at 国产主播 鈥 Ontario as a pediatric clinical instructor, where she has taught for the past seven years. Her time at WCU has been marked with new opportunities and experiences in nursing.

After teaching for nearly five years, Loreen was informed that her role now required a master鈥檚 degree.

鈥淚 was 56 years old at the time and didn鈥檛 want to go back to school. I hadn鈥檛 been a student since 1987,鈥 she said.

Several months later, Laureen learned that she qualified for a grant to cover the cost of the program. As a result, she was able to start the WCU MSN online program in Nursing Education in January 2022 and conclude in December 2023, graduating at the top of her class and earning a nomination into Sigma Theta Tau. She also won the Daisy Award in October 2023.

One of Laureen鈥檚 greatest outcomes from her master鈥檚 program was her introduction to the simulation center.

Laureen quickly fell in love with simulations and in January, she transferred from the nursing department to the simulations department. In the fall, Laureen will begin as the newest pediatric simulation instructor at WCU.

鈥淚 never thought I needed or wanted a master鈥檚 degree, but now, because I have it, I am a simulation instructor.鈥

Laureen is excited about her future and remains dedicated to teaching and helping the next generation of nurses thrive.

FNP vs. AGPCNP: Similarities and Differences /blog/family-nurse-practitioner-vs-adult-gerontology-primary-care-nurse-practitioner Wed, 10 Jul 2024 16:39:24 +0000 /?p=18479 FNP vs. AGPCNP: Similarities and Differences

If you鈥檙e an aspiring nurse practitioner who鈥檚 deciding between a FNP vs. AGPCNP career, you need to take these key differences into consideration.

FNP vs. AGPCNP: Similarities and Differences

Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) and adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners (AGPCNPs) are both advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). This means that they possess at least a master鈥檚 degree in nursing (MSN) and have undergone advanced clinical training.

While both are well-equipped to deliver primary care, FNPs and AGPCNPs are uniquely qualified to serve specific patient populations.

Read on to learn more about the difference between FNPs and AGPCNPs as well as which career path may be the right fit for you.

What Does a Family Nurse Practitioner Do?

FNPs are advanced practice registered nurses who are qualified to provide comprehensive care to patients across their entire lifespan, from infancy to end-of-life. FNPs generally serve as the first point of contact for patients who are seeking healthcare services, treating individuals and families throughout their lives.

Dedicated to enhancing the wellness of their patients, FNPs focus on preventative care and holistic health approaches. As such, they do not work in acute care鈥攎edical treatment provided for short-term illnesses, injuries, or medical conditions that require immediate attention.

FNP’s work across , a few of the most common are listed below.

  • Family practice clinics
  • Specialty clinics
  • Urgent Care
  • Emergency departments (ED)
  • Hospital clinics and chronic care units
  • Retail clinics
  • Palliative care settings
  • Long-term care facilities
  • House calls and home care companies

What Does an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Do?

AGPCNPs are advanced practice registered nurses who are qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat patients ranging from adolescents (starting at the age of 13) through older adulthood to end of life. Dedicated to enhancing the health and wellness of their patients, AGPCNPs focus on preventative care and holistic health approaches.

They may also support patients transitioning between care settings, which often involves
educating patients and caregivers on how to best maintain and/or monitor the patient鈥檚 health.

AGPCNP鈥檚 work in various environments, including:

  • Clinics
  • Hospitals/Urgent care
  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Long-term care including homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, etc.
  • Outpatient care centers
  • Medical and physician offices

What is the Process of Becoming an FNP vs. AGPCNP?

The process of becoming an FNP or AGPCNP is similar although the content of the national certification examination will vary. To become certified, both prospective FNPs and AGPCNPs typically follow these three steps:

Step 1: Become a Registered Nurse

To become a registered nurse (RN), you must complete an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)) and successfully pass the to obtain your license.

It鈥檚 important to note that all states require prospective RNs to hold a minimum of an ADN to qualify for their license. However, a growing number of states now require a BSN.

In states where a BSN is not required, registered nurses with an ADN are recommended to
enhance their qualifications to meet specific employer requirements by enrolling in an RN to
BSN program
.

Step 2: Earn National Certification

In addition to holding an active RN license, you must become nationally certified as a FNP or
AGPCNP through an examination process via the or the .

To qualify for either examination, you must submit an application. Both the ANCC and AANP require you to submit the following to determine your eligibility:

  • Proof of a current RN license
  • Proof of completion of an accredited FNP or AGPCNP education program, including all supervised clinical practice hours
  • Relevant transcripts
  • An application fee

After successfully passing the exam, your national nurse practitioner certification will be valid for five years; however, to maintain certification, you must follow the renewal process detailed on the ANCC or AANP site.

Step 3: Apply for State Licensure

Following your RN licensure and your national certification as an FNP or AGPCNP, you must become licensed in the specific state where you plan to practice. As licensure requirements differ by state, it鈥檚 important to understand the requirements outlined by your state鈥檚 .

The application process for most state licensure requires a minimum of:

  • Proof of a current RN license
  • Proof of national FNP or AGPCNP certification
  • Proof of the completion of an accredited FNP or AGPCNP program, including all supervised clinical practice hours
  • An application fee

Deciding Which Educational Path Fits Your Needs

Although the general process of becoming a FNP or AGPCNP is similar, the specific coursework varies.

FNP programs typically offer a comprehensive range of pediatric courses, preparing practitioners to care for patients from infancy through the end-of-life. In contrast, AGPCNP programs focus on adolescent to adult care, generally excluding pediatric courses from their curriculum. Visit WCU鈥檚 catalog to learn more about and .

Once you鈥檝e decided on the right fit for you, consider applying to an accredited nursing program that not only meets your state鈥檚 criteria to become an FNP or AGPCNP, but also aligns with your professional goals.

Alumna鈥檚 Story of Success Spans From Courtrooms to Hospitals, Venezuela to the United States

In a journey across continents and careers, 国产主播-Miami alumna Stella M., BSN 鈥23, shared her inspiring story transitioning from a legal background to nursing.

Born and raised in Venezuela, Stella grew up with dreams of becoming a doctor. However, when it came time to choose a degree, circumstances pushed her down a different path.

鈥淢y city in Venezuela didn鈥檛 have a medical school,鈥 Stella explained. 鈥淚 was the only daughter of my father, and he didn鈥檛 want me to go to another city, so I pursued law school and have my bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 in the science of law.鈥

Despite having a law degree, Stella found herself starting over when she had to leave her home country of Venezuela for political reasons. She came to the United States and adapted as best as she could. Instead of practicing law, she worked as a server in the restaurant industry, a shift that she described as 鈥渁 huge shock.鈥

However, life had one more curveball to throw her way. When the pandemic caused her restaurant to close, Stella began looking for work in other industries, and ended up working as a patient care technician (PCT) in the healthcare setting. As a PCT, Stella was reminded of her passion for medicine and decided she would fight for the career she wanted. She also hoped to be a role model for her 3-year-old daughter.

鈥淚 always tried to teach her that we can be whatever we want,鈥 Stella said. 鈥淲e just need to work hard.鈥 So that鈥檚 exactly what Stella did.

Seizing the opportunity to fulfill her childhood dream, Stella enrolled in WCU’s nursing program in April 2022. Despite English not being her first language, her sheer determination and commitment led her to pass the NCLEX just 11 days after completing her program. She also graduated with a 3.98 GPA, with the lowest grade she ever received being an A-.

Her pinning ceremony on Nov. 14, 2023 was a special moment because she had already passed her licensure exam and was able to be recognized officially as a registered nurse. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I can tell you 国产主播 prepared me for that,鈥 Stella said.

Stella credited WCU for providing the tools and resources necessary for her success, from skilled professors to research facilities and tutoring services. She remains proud to be a WCU alum. 鈥湽鞑 was like my home. I miss my classrooms and my professors,鈥 Stella said. 鈥淚 feel really proud of being a 国产主播 student and graduate.鈥

After graduating, Stella was hired to work in the trauma unit of the ICU starting in January 2024. It was the culmination of all her hard work and the realization of a longstanding dream. 鈥淚 have achieved my goal,鈥 she said, emphasizing the meaning she finds in connecting with patients. 鈥淲hen patients are in the intensive care unit, they are intubated and on ventilators, so they cannot speak, but you can see the patients speaking with their eyes.鈥

Looking ahead, Stella plans to gain two years of experience in the ICU before deciding between pursuing a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) credential or becoming a nurse practitioner.

Stella’s daughter is now 10 years old and proud of her mom. 鈥淪he was the first person during my ceremony screaming and yelling, 鈥楳om I love you! I鈥檓 proud of you!鈥欌 Her daughter hopes to become a nurse in the future, just like her mother and like Stella鈥檚 mother, who is also a nurse. 鈥淢y father and mother met in the hospital,鈥 Stella said. 鈥淢y mom was taking care of my grandma, my dad鈥檚 mom.鈥

As Stella continues to contemplate her future, she expresses a desire to return to WCU, citing the university’s impact on her success. 鈥淚 want to be an example to others that if we fight for what we want, we can do it,鈥 Stella said. 鈥淚f you are at 国产主播, you can do it in the same way that I did.鈥
