Originally from California, Esther N. initially planned to attend the university’s campus in Anaheim until learning about the advantages of moving to the Lone Star State.聽

“I originally heard about 国产主播 from California because that’s where I was living previously,” she said. “But then I found out that Texas is actually a cheaper option, and I decided to move to Texas.”

The transition from California to Texas was made smoother by 国产主播鈥檚 support, Esther explained. Despite never having visited the Texas campus before her move, she described her first impression as overwhelmingly positive.

“When I first stepped foot on the campus, I thought it was beautiful; it took my breath away,” she said.

Esther鈥檚 decision to pursue nursing stemmed from personal experiences.

“I picked nursing because when I was young, I often spent most of my time in the hospital, and the nurses made it such a wonderful place to be that I didn’t even want to leave,” Esther said.

She was determined to share that same compassion and care with her future patients.

Adjusting to life in Texas was a surprisingly smooth experience for Esther.

“I adjusted really well, actually. I’m very grateful that I moved because I got to have family here, and I’m not going back anytime soon,” she said.

She recommended Dallas as a vibrant place to live, adding, “The food is great, the culture is great, the people are good. It鈥檚 a wonderful place to live 鈥 not in the summer, though!”

Esther reflected on the strong relationships she built at 国产主播.

“My relationship with my classmates was amazing; I found my forever family in nursing school,” she said. 鈥淩elationships with the professors and faculty were also really good because, at West Coast, they value student input, so communication was always flowing.”

As for her preparation for the nursing field, she credited the university’s rigorous support.

“West Coast prepared me amazingly for the NCLEX and for nursing as a whole,” she said.

At her pinning ceremony, Esther celebrated her achievements and offered advice to future students: “You can’t do nursing school alone, so find that family or friend that you can rely on because it is going to get tough. Use your resources early and remember why you started nursing school.”

Single Mom and Cancer Survivor Finds New Purpose in Nursing at WCU-Texas聽

Dina P., a BSN student at 国产主播-Texas, represents the grit and determination that drives so many aspiring nurses. From losing her job during the pandemic to receiving a breast cancer diagnosis the same week she moved to Dallas, Dina’s path to nursing was shaped by her personal experiences and a deep desire to help others in the medical field.

“My infusion nurse was a young breast cancer patient too. After her treatments, she went to nursing school,鈥 Dina said. 鈥淚t stuck with me.”

This pivotal moment during a challenging time led Dina to commit to nursing, where she could offer the same level of care and compassion that made such a difference to her.

Dina鈥檚 decision to enroll at 国产主播-Texas came unexpectedly. She initially scheduled tours at three nursing schools but decided to visit WCU’s Richardson campus. Despite not receiving an official tour, the experience left a lasting impression.

“I didn鈥檛 even schedule a tour with admissions, but I fell in love with the campus. I didn鈥檛 go to see the other schools. I knew this was where I needed to be,” Dina shared.

Now thriving in her nursing program, Dina reflects on her experience transitioning back into student life after a 20-year break. 国产主播 provides numerous resources that have supported her, allowing her to excel despite the challenges of an accelerated program.

“I was worried about the accelerated program, but I would do it 1,000 times over again,” Dina said.

Looking ahead, her goal is clear 鈥 working in oncology, specifically with women.

鈥淚 had a patient in my Med-Surg rotation with breast cancer. Just being able to tell her, 鈥業 know what you’re going through,鈥 made all the difference. I want to focus on women鈥檚 oncology because I can relate to them in a way that not everyone can,鈥 she said.

Dina鈥檚 advice to future students? Focus on time management and perseverance.

鈥淒on’t think that you don’t need to study. You do need to study鈥 manage your time鈥 keep them separated. The time for studying is your time for studying, and your time for family is your time for family,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd don鈥檛 let setbacks stop you. There are so many resources available. I came here as a single mom, bald from chemo, with no job. If I can do it, anyone can.鈥

WCU-Texas BSN Graduate Didn鈥榯 Let Early Stumble Knock Her Off Path of Becoming Nurse

Recent 国产主播-Texas graduate Jemima O.’s journey to her nursing pinning was far from easy. She had faced an academic suspension at a previous school, a setback that many might have seen as the end of their dreams. Yet, for Jemima, it was the start of a new chapter. Encouraged by a friend who praised 国产主播’s hands-on approach and robust support system, she decided to give nursing school another shot.

鈥淚鈥檓 so excited,鈥 Jemima shared. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a long time coming鈥 a lot of bumps, but it鈥檚 all worth it.鈥

Jemima’s passion for nursing began in middle school with a desire to care for babies, and it deepened further after losing her grandmother in 2020.

鈥淪he passed from an asthma attack in Nigeria, and my mom always said she didn鈥檛 feel supported,鈥 Jemima recalled.

This experience fueled her commitment to becoming a nurse who truly listens and cares for her patients, extending that care to families, too.

“Nursing is way more than giving meds or helping patients rehab. It’s caring for the individual, getting to their level, and building a patient-nurse relationship,鈥 she said. “I want to be that nurse that listens … that’s my goal, to really listen to the patient and let them tell me what to do.”

Throughout her time at 国产主播, Jemima pushed herself beyond her comfort zone. Initially shy, she embraced roles like being a PAL tutor and work-study student, which helped her grow both professionally and personally. Her professors and peers provided the encouragement and resources she needed, enabling her to transform from a struggling student into one on the Dean’s List.

鈥淚t was a huge move from Houston to Dallas for school, especially because I wasn’t successful in my other school. I came from somewhere very low. I came from a place where I was basically academically suspended, and then I was getting A’s and was on the Dean’s List,” Jemima said. “And my professors are a big reason for that. There’s a lot of moments that you might feel like you can’t do it but to see that I’m here now is unbelievable.”

Having just passed her NCLEX exam, Jemima feels prepared and confident for her career ahead.

鈥淚鈥檝e been taught the skills and critical thinking鈥 I think I鈥檓 ready,鈥 she said.

Her advice to future students is simple but powerful: 鈥淯se your resources鈥 be vocal about what you鈥檙e dealing with鈥 keep going.鈥

Dr. Amy Bronson, dean of the Master of Physician Assistant (MPA) program at 国产主播-Texas, has earned the AI Champion Special Impact Award from AIMed, recognizing her forward-thinking approach to preparing PA graduates for clinical practice today and medicine in the future.

鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly honored to receive this award,鈥 Bronson said. 鈥淎I is revolutionizing how we deliver healthcare. Integrating AI into our PA program allows students to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring they can provide better, more informed care to their patients.鈥

Bronson will attend the AIMed24 Conference in November, where she will be formally recognized for her groundbreaking work. Her efforts have solidified her as a leader at the intersection of healthcare and technology, preparing future medical professionals for an AI-driven world.

鈥淲hen I started incorporating AI into the curriculum, it wasn鈥檛 just about the technology,鈥 Bronson said. 鈥淚t was about teaching students how to leverage it responsibly and ethically, using AI not as a replacement for human care but as a tool to enhance it.鈥

Bronson will also serve as a panelist at AIMed24, where she will discuss AI鈥檚 role in shaping the future of healthcare education. Her experience integrating AI into academic programs provides a unique perspective on how educators can adapt to new technologies while maintaining the human connection central to healthcare.

As she prepares for her role at the conference, Bronson reflects on what this recognition means to her and her students.

鈥淭his award is not just for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 for all the students who have embraced this emerging field, for the faculty and administration who have supported this innovation, and partners that have been pioneers in this field that have made this possible. We are all part of something much bigger.鈥

Bronson鈥檚 colleagues and students couldn鈥檛 be prouder of her accomplishments. This award recognizes not only her innovative work but also her dedication to the future of healthcare education.

Some people are bitten by the healthcare bug early, while others get bitten at veterinary clinics and decide to change careers.

“I was a vet tech for about three to four years, and then one day I got bit in the face by a dog, and I was like, ‘OK, I need to do something different,鈥” said Tori I., who is currently enrolled in the Master of Physician Assistant (PA) program at 国产主播 in Richardson, Texas. “In some ways, I am so glad I got bit on the face by that dog because it pushed me towards where I’m really meant to be.”

After that turning point, Tori began volunteering at a local hospice, an experience that deeply touched her and solidified her desire to pursue a career in human healthcare.

“Working with those patients just really touched my heart and soul,” she said. “After that, I was like, ‘OK, this is it for me,’ and I researched all different types of careers in healthcare, and (physician assistant) is the one I just kept coming back to.”

Tori said she was drawn to the role of physician assistant because it offers a perfect blend of autonomy and teamwork. PAs carry significant responsibilities, such as forming differential diagnoses and treatment plans and providing clinical interventions.聽They also have the benefit of working collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient care.

Currently in her clinical year and set to graduate in December, Tori has found her passion in working with the older adult population. A standout moment for her was during her internal medicine rotation, where she worked alongside a highly knowledgeable and passionate nurse practitioner. This experience enhanced her clinical skills and confirmed her desire to work with older adults, valuing the rich life stories they share and the lessons they impart.

Tori advises future PA students to embrace every opportunity during clinical rotations. Her motto, 鈥淔eel the fear and do it anyway,鈥 has guided her through the challenges of the program. She encourages students to jump into every learning experience, as these moments are crucial for professional growth.聽聽

Grateful for the support and guidance from her professors and cohort at 国产主播, Tori looks forward to significantly impacting the healthcare field. She aims to build strong, collaborative relationships with her patients, improving their health outcomes and enriching their lives.

“I feel like I’m really lucky to attend this school and this program because I can tell that all of my professors have a lot of heart, and they all really care about us,” she said. “I just have to remind myself that this school has prepared me so well to do my job and my work as a PA. It’s going to be scary (after graduation), but I think I’m going to be very ready, very prepared by my education here.”

WCU-Texas BSN student Hailey O. has always known she wanted to go into healthcare, but she didn鈥檛 know exactly how she was going to approach it. Nursing wasn鈥檛 the original plan. In fact, after she graduated high school, she began pursuing a degree in health sciences with aspirations of becoming a physician assistant. The more she learned about the healthcare field, however, the more she realized nursing better aligned with her long-term goals.

鈥淚 want to be on the patient side,鈥 Hailey said about her reasons to pursue nursing. 鈥淚 want to be advocating for the patient in there with them, you know.鈥

Nursing checked every career checkbox that mattered to Hailey. Being a lifelong fan of the TV show 鈥淕ray鈥檚 Anatomy,鈥 she has always been fascinated with healthcare and the human body. Additionally, after witnessing firsthand the uncertainty caused by the 2008 market crash, she also wanted a job that provided financial stability. Nurses, she figured, are always needed.

Having found a career that both matched her passions and met her more practical concerns, she began looking for nursing schools in her hometown of Ontario, California. That鈥檚 when she found the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at 国产主播.

A big reason why she chose WCU-Ontario is its focus on nursing. 鈥淚 know nursing is what I want to do,鈥 she said, 鈥淎nd I don鈥檛 want to mess around and spend any other time not pursuing it 鈥 国产主播 just seemed like the best option to have everything that I wanted to do in a timely manner.鈥

Hailey pivoted from health sciences to nursing, changing schools in the process. However, there was one more big change awaiting her in the future: moving to Texas.

Hailey鈥檚 husband, who is originally from Texas, chose not to re-enlist in the military since doing so risked getting stationed elsewhere while Hailey was still in school. This opened up the possibility of moving out of California 鈥 an option they had long considered, but the priority was still ensuring that Hailey could finish her nursing degree.

Luckily, they had one option left: Hailey鈥檚 husband happened to be from a town near Dallas that was driving distance from the WCU-Texas campus. It was an unexpected but fortuitous coincidence. During a visit to see his family, his grandmother drove Hailey to see the campus, and this wild idea of moving across states began to take shape.

Starting the transfer process was easier than she thought. Hailey explained, 鈥淚 reached out to my student advisor, and I was like, 鈥楬ey, this is kind of my idea of what I want to do. Would this even be possible?鈥 鈥 And she was like, 鈥極h yeah, that鈥檚 totally possible.鈥欌

Hailey officially transferred to WCU-Texas in 2023. Now settled into her new life in a new state, she is getting closer to finishing her degree and becoming a registered nurse.

Check out what she said about her experience so far!

Q&A With Hailey

WCU: What was your first impression of the WCU-Texas campus?

Hailey: It鈥檚 huge. I mean, just being able to have the caf茅 on the bottom floor! And then we have different study rooms, and I think the library there is awesome 鈥 It takes up half the second floor.

WCU: The WCU-Texas cohort is smaller than what you鈥檝e encountered in the past. What has that been like?

Hailey: We work together. We text each other outside of class. I would say, for the most part, everyone knows everyone鈥檚 name in our cohort. 鈥 I feel like our cohort just constantly wants to make each other better and constantly prepare ourselves for getting into the nursing career.

WCU: What was your experience transferring from Ontario to Texas?

Hailey: I worked very closely with the lead of the clinical faculty at the Texas campus, and then I worked with my student advisor at the Ontario campus to kind of get the transfer rolling. 鈥 They made it super easy and just gave me a step-by-step of what I needed to get done. I ended up having to take a little bit more time with moving and getting adjusted. So I even delayed it one more term than I wanted to, and they were just super gracious, super willing to work with me on whatever I needed to do.聽

WCU: What had been your favorite part about moving to a new state?

Hailey: We鈥檝e spent some time in downtown Dallas, and we鈥檝e spent some time in Fort Worth. There鈥檚 just so much culture and a mix of individuals here, which I think is really cool. Everyone kind of comes together in this one place to make it better 鈥 hopefully make it better 鈥 for the future. 鈥 I鈥檝e been to all the major Texas cities now and have been able to explore a little bit. So, it鈥檚 been good.

WCU: There鈥檚 been one more development in your family鈥檚 journey: Your husband has now started his nursing degree at WCU! What has that been like?

Hailey: We carpool on Tuesdays, so it鈥檚 a lot of fun. My class starts a little bit earlier than he does, and he gets out a little bit later. So, we both use that time to study, look over notes, anything like that. We鈥檝e been able to make it work a lot better than I thought it would originally, and I think our working together toward a common goal has been really good for our relationship and for growing individually.

WCU: Did he know he wanted to go into nursing when he met you?

Hailey: He never even had nursing on his radar. He automatically enlisted after high school and had kind of written off college. He tried to get into a fire department whenever we moved back here. It didn鈥檛 end up working out. Everything that he had learned about the fire department and paramedics 鈥 what their job is 鈥 he was like, 鈥業 really like this. I really like helping people this way.鈥 And I was like, 鈥榊ou know, what paramedics can do, nurses can do.鈥 A lot of it overlaps.

He started looking more into it, looking at my notes, kind of seeing how it was, and he just decided that this was what he wanted to do.

鈥淲hen I think of what it means to be proud, for me, it鈥檚 being a good person, a kind person, and that I can be a good representative of this amazing community,鈥 said Alex. 鈥淪upporting my students, regardless of how they identify, is so important. I want to continue learning more and incorporate that into my teaching as well as my own personal journey.鈥

When Alex first found the terms they identified with, it was 鈥渁 lightbulb going off to self-acceptance and pride.鈥 Alex feels lucky that they have been open to sharing their identity for most of their adulthood, allowing that visibility to shine amongst and inspire students.

Many of Alex鈥檚 students have confided in them or felt comfortable to be their true selves in class. As Alex notes, this is why visibility is so important.

Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, Alex didn鈥檛 have school groups or clubs that welcomed them and the way they identified. In fact, they dropped out of school due in part to a feeling of isolation.

鈥淚鈥檝e been discriminated against, insulted, and told to keep my identity quiet, even in workplaces that were supposedly progressive,鈥 Alex said. 鈥淚 was told I was wrong, evil, and should be institutionalized.鈥

Alex appreciates the open and accepting environment of WCU and the ability for everyone to be themselves.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important for everyone to show respect and understanding in both our work environment and the classroom,鈥 Alex said. 鈥淓veryone, regardless of how they identify, should love themself and be kind to themself as well as others.鈥

Alex also notes that LGBTQIA+ students and colleagues value the ability to be seen and heard, and for their identity to be visible when they feel safe and comfortable sharing that. Access to information on various identities can be a helpful tool for those seeking to understand this, and Alex points to the GLAAD Media Reference Guide as a great resource to learn material on a multitude of LGBTQIA+ topics.

鈥淲ords must be backed up by policy and remembrance, not just for Pride Month, but all year long so everyone feels supported,鈥 Alex said. 鈥淚t also helps to remind others of the role models in all identities to show that we are just people, mostly good people, and many religious faiths do support LGBTQIA+ persons.鈥

When asked about LGBTQIA+ role models, Alex has looked up to several, including Harvey Milk, Alan Turing, Silvia Rivera, Bayard Rustin, Audre Lorde, Suzy Eddie Izzard, and Del LaGrace Volcano.

鈥淟GBTQIA+ individuals want to live their lives as everyone does,鈥 Alex said. 鈥淗ating others because of their identity has no positive side; it just hurts others, particularly youth. I also think allies are extremely important, as allies can cause others to change their minds for the better.鈥

Alex plans to celebrate Pride Month working on some creative ventures, including writing fiction genre stories, creating art, and visiting LGBTQIA+ artwork and cultural events. As they reflect further on what Pride Month means, Alex gives some sound advice for those struggling with their identity.

鈥淯nderstanding yourself takes time, as it is a personal journey to be part of self-actualization,鈥 Alex said. 鈥淩ead about identities, reflect on them, and give yourself space. What you understand now may grow and change, which is simply human. There is no 鈥榦ne鈥 way to properly be a particular identity, and no one should gatekeep how to be LGBTQIA+鈥攋ust be a good person.鈥

As 国产主播-Texas nursing student Avery P. headed to school one morning for an important exam, little did she know that fate had another test for her along the way.

As she rounded a corner and approached the intersection, Avery came upon a full-sized pickup truck flipped onto its roof, two occupants still inside and two children outside the vehicle. Without hesitation, Avery sprang into action, embodying the essence of her future profession.

“I saw this car upside down, and there were no police there, so I was like, well, I’m gonna get out,” Avery said.

Amidst the chaos, Avery’s nursing instincts kicked in. She rushed to aid the family, assessing the two young children while their parents worked to clear themselves from the wreck. Despite the harrowing scene, Avery remained composed, providing comfort and reassurance to the children and keeping the family’s two dogs off the road.

“The kids just had blood everywhere, their faces were just like covered in blood, and they were just like screaming and crying ‘Get them out of the car; get them out of the car,'” Avery shared. “I was just holding them… telling them we’re going to get your mom out.”

With the help of some joggers and other motorists, the parents were freed from the truck’s cab, and police eventually arrived to control traffic and figure out what had happened. Since she had not seen the crash, Avery helped clean up the children 鈥 who had only suffered superficial cuts and scrapes 鈥 and ensured the family’s pets were controlled before heading off to school.

“After it, I was a little shaken up for sure; my adrenaline was through the roof, and I was like, ‘What just happened?’ but then I had to go to class,” she said.

During the ordeal, Avery’s resilience and quick thinking did not go unnoticed. With the help of the responding officer via a very kind note from him to her instructor, Avery was granted the opportunity to retake 鈥 and pass 鈥 her test.

“He told me I shouldn’t have negative consequences for my actions, and I should be celebrated in that,” Avery expressed. “He said, ‘You picked a very honorable career path, and you should be very proud.’ I’m very grateful for all of that.”

As she navigates her final year at 国产主播, Avery聽remains聽open to her future possibilities. Whether聽it’s聽the fast-paced environment of the ER or the nurturing environment of pediatric care, Avery’s unwavering dedication to serving others聽remains聽steadfast.聽

“I work well under pressure, and so that is something I’m very definitely very interested in,” Avery said. “I’m excited for those rotations for sure.”

In the wake of the accident, Avery’s perspective on her role as a future nurse has been forever altered. With every patient encounter, she carries with her the lessons learned from that fateful morning 鈥 a reminder of the profound impact nurses can have on the lives of others.

“I honestly enjoyed it, I think. It was more of a thrill like, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s help these people’ 鈥 instead of ‘oh my, I’m so scared,'” she said. “Afterwards, reflecting on how I felt, it made me feel like I really did make the right career decision with how good I felt after, like how good it feels just to help people.”
