After graduating from 国产主播 in 2022 with her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OT), alumna Olivia P. is making a profound impact on the lives of children diagnosed with autism.

Olivia’s experience with OT started in high school when she was volunteering at a rehabilitation facility as an aid for physical and occupational therapists.

After completing her undergraduate education, Olivia began researching different doctorate programs for OT. She chose WCU because of its ethos of diversity and the accelerated program structure.

As a student at WCU, she appreciated the high caliber of the hands-on learning opportunities within her desired specialty of pediatrics.

“I’ll never forget going into the pediatrics gym and being exposed to all the sensory equipment for the first time,” Olivia said.

She also appreciated how her fieldwork at a pediatric outpatient facility placed her in the middle of the action, which she says contributed to her greater understanding of how to apply her education in real world settings.

Olivia was also proud of her capstone project, in which she created a six-week life skills program that the facility still uses today.

In 2022, while transitioning into a full-time practitioner, Olivia was drawn to Easterseals, a nonprofit organization providing services, education, outreach, and advocacy for individuals with disabilities. She was particularly interested in working with its younger children diagnosed with autism.

“It was such a great, inviting environment where families and kids are grateful to be there and willing to do whatever it takes to enhance their quality of life,” Olivia said. “We work on fine motor skills to help them be more independent.”

Recalling her most challenging case, Olivia lit up with pride. Through patience, perseverance, and a deep understanding of sensory needs, she guided her young client toward milestones once deemed unattainable.

Over time, Olivia built a relationship with the 4-year-old boy and helped him work towards goals such as putting on his socks and shoes, eating, and completing a puzzle.

“In the beginning, I thought it would be my hardest case, and now it’s the most rewarding case I’ve ever had,” Olivia recalled. “Seeing his accomplishments made me feel like I was making a difference.”

Olivia has stayed in touch with her alma mater since graduating and starting her own family. She is proud to be a WCU alumna, saying that the education helped shape her future and build relationships with her peers. 

Today, Olivia proudly advises future students to explore different professional settings 鈥� mental health, pediatrics, geriatrics, or outpatient 鈥� to find what they love.

“You get to be creative and make your sessions fun and specific to your client,” Olivia said. “If you’re interested in helping others and trying to make their lives as meaningful as possible, occupational therapy is a great area of healthcare to pursue.”

What Is a Physical Therapist (PT)?

A licensed physical therapist is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). These professionals work with patients with injury, illness, or disability. DPTs evaluate, diagnose, develop treatment plans, and implement a course of treatment for each patient. Treatment is designed to rehabilitate or improve mobility, and sometimes to help manage pain. As Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) President, Ashley D. helps other 国产主播 students get involved and stay motivated throughout their journey in the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program.

Ashley said SOTA has several committees that allow students to volunteer in the community, create connections with other students, advocate for occupational therapy, and bring awareness to wellness resources.

鈥淲e try to foster a community w颅ithin the OT program,鈥� she said.

Finding Her Path & Becoming a Leader

Ashley was introduced to occupational therapy as an elementary school teacher when she observed one of her students in a therapy session.

鈥淚 loved how the session focused on helping the student do daily things that would help her get through life, and I wanted to do the same,鈥� Ashley said.

After completing her prerequisites, Ashley decided to enroll in the MSOT program at WCU鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies. She said having had friends who had graduated from WCU鈥檚 MSOT program and being able to quickly begin her journey helped in the decision process.

鈥淓ven though teaching wasn鈥檛 for me, it helped me grow confident in myself to pursue a different career path,鈥� Ashley said.

As her confidence continued to grow at WCU, Ashley wanted to be more active in the SOTA organization and take on a leadership role.

At the end of the trimester, SOTA holds a showcase so that each committee can share what they have accomplished.

鈥淲hen I first saw the SOTA showcase, I was encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and get more involved,鈥� Ashley said. 鈥淣ow, I hope to inspire someone to step out of their comfort zone and take on a leadership role.鈥�

Sharing the Importance of Student Self-Care

As a student representative, Ashley actively advocates for classmates to first take care of themselves as they progress further into their program.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a struggle of my own not to overwork myself,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to feel eager to get involved and lose track of your own mental well-being.鈥�

Ashley sends weekly messages with motivational quotes to students and encourages them to seek help if needed.

鈥�滨鈥檒濒 say 滨鈥檓 stressed in the email. I want to remind students that 迟丑别测鈥檙别 not alone,鈥� Ashley said. 鈥淭his is a fast-paced program, but an entire cohort is going through the same thing with you.鈥�

For 国产主播 alumni and instructor Lauren Diaz, a large portion of the fieldwork she does with students is to show the need for occupational therapists in the community. 

鈥淎t the very crux of what occupational therapy is, we focus on improving the health and wellness of individuals through the engagement of meaningful occupations,鈥� Lauren said. 鈥淲e focus on helping people thrive in their environment.鈥� 

Lauren鈥檚 journey began by working at a women鈥檚 transitional living facility that was starting a therapy garden. She said that the experience led to the development of her role as a community-based fieldwork instructor. 

鈥淲e created a position to go to places that don鈥檛 have OT and provide supervision for our students to focus on mental health and wellness in our community,鈥� she said. 

Lauren is currently partnering with two community organizations that assist people who are experiencing or have experienced homelessness. Students work with clients individually and put together a program to run group therapy. 

At Ascencia Emergency Shelter, students are facilitating a seven-week OT group program, 鈥淩oots to Wellness,鈥� for the residents living in the shelter. 

鈥淓ach week is focused on one of the eight dimensions of wellness,鈥� Lauren said. 鈥淪tudents have activities for the residents that help them with goal setting and self-management strategies, such as meal planning, yoga, painting and more.鈥� 

After each trimester, students collect data and outcomes to present and advocate for the need of OTs. 

鈥淭wo of our organizations have hired OTs because of the work of our students,鈥� Lauren said. 

Lauren鈥檚 passion for OT was sparked after working as a behavior interventionist for children. She said she saw some of the children experience occupational therapy. The children would go through obstacle courses and decorate cookies to improve their motor skills. 

鈥淚t just looked very fun to me,鈥� Lauren said. 鈥淚t looked like the children were having fun. The therapist was having fun.鈥� 

Lauren graduated as part of the second cohort for the MSOT program at WCU-CGS in 2015. 

鈥淭hrough school, I learned more about the whole scope of OT and what鈥檚 possible,鈥� she said. 

Lauren hopes to foster her students鈥� strengths and provide them with experience in natural environments where they can grow. 

鈥淲orking in the community pushes you out of your comfort zone. You have to be the one that explains what OT is and be the one who answers all of the questions,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty exciting; we are creating new pathways for the profession.鈥�
