WCU 2022 Graduates

A big congratulations to all the 国产主播 graduates who recently celebrated this amazing achievement.

The WCU 2022 Summer Commencement ceremony was held on July 9 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. With more than 700 graduates and 4,500 guests, the event recognized students across programs 鈥 from nursing to physical therapy 鈥 who have proven they have the drive and tenacity to make it in the professional world.

鈥淭hrough perseverance, and just having this one objective, this one goal in mind, it really helped me to just push through it. And now I鈥檓 here,鈥 Megan Divinagracia, BSN 鈥22, said while celebrating her graduation among classmates and faculty members.

Returning student Sheryl Pena was also among those celebrating. After earning her BSN at WCU, she came back to take advantage of the online programs, having just earned a post-master鈥檚 nursing certificate. When asked why she chose to come back to WCU, she said, 鈥淭he people, the instructors, the camaraderie with the students you get鈥 it鈥檚 very different here.鈥

鈥淭hey had like a family atmosphere,鈥 DPT graduate Bryan Giron echoed. 鈥淭hey made me feel really welcome.鈥

We wish all the WCU graduates great success, and we couldn鈥檛 be prouder to welcome you into the WCU alumni family!

Watch our commencement recap video above to hear more about what graduates are saying about their time at WCU.

As a collaborative effort between Career Services and the Alumni Relations Team, 国产主播-Los Angeles held a Nursing Specialty Showcase for students on June 27.

For students, Monica Gutierrez and Ross Reinacher, career fairs like these are essential for their future success. While attending the Showcase they were able to learn about different areas of healthcare from WCU Alumni currently working in the field.

鈥淭he fact that they graduated from West Coast makes me feel better about being able to go out there, get a job, and find a career that I like and my path in nursing,鈥 Gutierrez said.

鈥淚 think this is invaluable,鈥 Reinacher said. 鈥淚’ve found a lot of useful information here. It鈥檚 great having people who have been in our situation, telling us what they鈥檝e gone through and what they’re doing now.鈥

WCU-Los Angeles Alumna Christina Le (BSN 鈥16) was happy to come back to her old stomping grounds to help future nurses find their niche.

鈥淚 think it’s important to teach the others along the way that probably are having the same struggles that you did,鈥 Le said. 鈥淚 think it’s really nice to hear that there is success outside of school and that we all can do it and you’re going to make it.鈥

Alumnus Shota Mkrtumyan (BSN 鈥17) shared with students advice on the importance of doing what you love.

鈥淗ealth care gives you the option to do many things,鈥 Mkrtumyan said. 鈥淵ou could do inpatient care or in the insurance industry but the most important advice that I would give is find your niche. I know we all need to have financial needs but don’t focus on the money focus on something that you would love to do for the rest of your life.鈥

Overall, 19 alumni attended the event to share their experiences and give current students insight into their chosen field.

Earvin 鈥淢agic鈥 Johnson is best known as an NBA legend, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and聽becoming a two-time Hall of Famer during his career. Now, Johnson stands out as a businessman and philanthropist 鈥 not to mention an idol and inspiration for Americans across the nation and individuals around the globe.

国产主播 is proud to announce that Magic Johnson will be delivering the commencement keynote address at the 2020 Virtual Commencement ceremony taking place on September 25. His drive to create not just a celebrated basketball legacy, but a powerful business empire as well, is a testament to a strong work ethic that can help empower our WCU graduates to strive to reach their full potential.

Magic Johnson hails from a humble background and began playing basketball early in his life. He聽聽when sportswriter Jack Stabley watched the young high school player score 36 points, 16 rebounds and 16 assists as a sophomore. Johnson has consistently stood out as one of the best basketball players of our time. He was inducted into the hall of fame twice, first for his individual career and again eight years later as a member of the Dream Team.

However, Johnson鈥檚 accomplishments extend far beyond basketball courts. His ventures as both a businessman and philanthropist have kept at-need communities front of mind. Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE) provides high-quality products and services that focus primarily on ethnically diverse and underserved urban communities through strategic alliances, investments, consulting and endorsements. As an entrepreneur, Johnson is hailed as the most powerful African-American businessman in the world.

In November 1991, Johnson announced that he had HIV. The Magic Johnson Foundation, established earlier that year, has grown be recognized for its efforts in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. The foundation operates five clinics that offer care for patients regardless of their ability to pay and has so far tested more than 40,000 individuals, as well as led awareness and prevention campaigns.

The Magic Johnson Foundation also runs The Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships for college students from underserved communities, and Community Empowerment Centers that provide urban communities education and empowerment through the innovative use of technology. Over the last 20 years, the Magic Johnson Foundation has become one of the most recognizable philanthropic organizations around the world.

At WCU鈥檚 2020 Virtual Commencement event, graduates, family members and faculty will get to hear from Magic Johnson himself about the drive and entrepreneurial spirit that has made him who he is today.

国产主播 students and graduates kicked off the year by bringing their “A-game” to the Virtual Career Fair on Feb. 5, hosted by the Online Career Services (CS) team.

The event’s theme was the Super Bowl, which was held聽the same week. In the weeks leading up, the CS specialists assisted with resumes, promoted the employers by highlighting their companies to students, and got creative with activities and emails that tied with the football theme.

The students that attended were prepared with updated resumes and their “elevator pitch,” a way to introduce themselves to recruiters in the chatrooms. Each employer had a chatroom where job seekers can enter to learn more about the open positions, application steps, and to simply network. For some, it acts as a pre-screening to the interview. One participant, an RN-BSN student set to graduate this summer, was asked to come in for an interview by two different employers.

Eighteen employers attended ranging from hospital systems to county partners, covering the multiple states where WCU Online programs are offered. Employers like the California Department of Public Health, Molina Healthcare, County of Orange, California Department of State Hospitals, Covenant Care, Encompass Health, and Methodist Health 鈥 to name a few 鈥 all logged on from 10 am to noon PST to connect with the students and graduates. This format not only worked for the employers, who are actively recruiting for multiple positions and degrees, but for the online and campus students who can log on from home or at work.

Linny, a recruiter for the County of Orange, who is no stranger to career fairs but a first-timer to the virtual format, said afterward that he “would love to participate again.”

“I found this to be very successful and loved how I was able to do it in my office. It was also great because I specifically support the health care agency and obviously all the students or graduates were looking for a position in a healthcare-related field,” he said.

With the support of other departments, these events provide a space for WCU students and alumni from all over to engage with peers and employers. CS Online hosts several virtual events and workshops with the next one on March 18.

More than 100 students and alumni attended the 国产主播-Los Angeles Spring career fair in April. Employers like Henry Mayo, Children鈥檚 Hospital Los Angeles, Mission City Network and Cedars Sinai attended the event to speak to students and alumni about internship and career opportunities.

The employers had plenty to offer with swag bags, job insights and helpful advice from a recruiter’s perspective. Andree Mulia, a聽senior talent advisor for Children鈥檚 Hospital聽Los聽Angeles聽and a registered nurse,聽came to WCU-Los聽Angeles聽with the goal to recruit new grads for CHLA’s RN residency program.聽Mulia聽also came prepared with tips for the new grads looking to make聽CHLA聽their home.

鈥淔or their first interview they should be engaged, have eye-to-eye contact and really share who they are,鈥 Mulia said. For those who are nervous for their first interview, she said don鈥檛 forget to practice.

The best way to practice, of course, is to visit Career Services and get a headstart on resume prep and mock interviews.

One of the reasons Jerrin Thomas drove all the way from Anaheim to attend the Men in Nursing event at 国产主播-Ontario was to meet more people like him.

“I wanted to come here to see people like me in this field, to learn from their challenges, and see what they did to overcome them so I can apply those in my clinical rotation and, hopefully, my professional career,” he said.

Thomas worked in the field of pharmaceutics for two years, but eventually grew tired of sitting in front of a computer 12 hours a day and decided he wanted to work directly with patients. Now enrolled in WCU-Orange County’s bachelor of science in nursing program, Thomas was eager to hear from other male nurses about the difficulties they faced and what steps he could take to be a better caregiver.

“I think men can be very effective nurses,” Thomas said. “At the end of the day, we have both males and females in the hospital as patients, and sometimes a male patient does prefer to have a male nurse to take care of them.”

WCU-Ontario Career Services Director Michelle Meitner said she was very excited about the turnout for the Men in Nursing event, and thanked the more than 200 students who attended. Meitner said more than 15 booths were set up for a variety of groups, including nursing associations, healthcare organizations and employers who were specifically recruiting male nurses.

Besides current students, Meitner also hoped prospective students interested in nursing would come to future events to see the campus and learn from guest speakers like WCU-Ontario nursing instructor and alumni Edmund Alfonso or featured speaker Joe Avelino, the chief nursing officer of College Medical Center in Long Beach.

鈥淭he field of nursing is definitely receptive to having more men in recruitment, and that鈥檚 why we have seven employers here today focused on recruitment of men,” Meitner said. “We鈥檙e really excited that our male students received more education today on the career opportunities available to them and that our female students were able to learn more about how they can help support their fellow students.鈥
