Carlos C., a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) graduate at 国产主播, prepares to take his next steps in healthcare. From working as a mental health technician to pursuing his passion for occupational therapy, Carlos has spent years honing his skills and deepening his commitment to serving others. Now in his final trimester of didactic coursework, he鈥檚 ready to translate his classroom experience into meaningful, real-world impact.聽

鈥淥ccupational therapy has always been a lifelong mission for me,鈥 he said. Originally from Pomona, California, Carlos is currently in his fourth and final trimester of didactic coursework. His next step? Fieldwork rotations, where he plans to bring his classroom and life experiences to life.

Carlos鈥 path to 国产主播 wasn鈥檛 a straight line. Before enrolling, he worked as a mental health technician at a psychiatric hospital in Glendora, where he supported patients with psychiatric disorders in their daily activities. This experience highlighted gaps in care that he believes occupational therapy can bridge. 鈥淪eeing those gaps made me want to apply to graduate school,鈥 he said.

His motivation to serve others stems from his upbringing. 鈥淢y mom was a caregiver, and growing up around my grandparents really shaped my desire to help,鈥 Carlos explained. His passion for occupational therapy was solidified when he recognized OT’s potential to support physical and mental health needs.聽

Carlos emphasized his commitment to inpatient care. 鈥淚 want to work in inpatient facilities where I can see people at their worst and help them get better,鈥 he said. In the long term, he aims to start a home health company to continue providing holistic care.聽

Carlos chose 国产主播 over other institutions because of its focus on diversity and inclusivity. 鈥淭he small class sizes and the personal relationships with professors make all the difference,鈥 he noted. 鈥淭hey bring their real-world experience into the classroom, and that鈥檚 invaluable.鈥

For future students, Carlos offers this advice: 鈥淩emain open-minded. You鈥檙e a lifelong learner. Every bit of feedback helps you grow.鈥 He also shared a mantra that has guided him through his journey: 鈥淲hat you reveal, you heal.鈥

MSOT - 24months | OTD - 32months

Occupational therapy (OT) is a rewarding healthcare profession that focuses on helping people of all ages participate in the activities that are important to them. Whether it鈥檚 a child struggling with fine motor skills, an adult recovering from a stroke, or an elderly person facing challenges with daily living, occupational therapists work to improve their clients鈥 quality of life by giving them the physical, emotional, and social skills needed to succeed.

If you鈥檙e passionate about helping others achieve their full potential and making a positive impact in your community, studying occupational therapy through an MSOT or OTD program might be the perfect career path for you.

You might be wondering how long occupational therapy school is. How many years will you have to devote to your education before you can practice? This can vary broadly. In general, an OT degree will typically take between two and four years to complete. However, the specific length of your degree will depend on the school you choose as well as whether you opt for a master鈥檚 or doctorate degree. Other factors to consider include whether you already have a bachelor鈥檚 degree and whether you need to complete prerequisites before starting.

Keep reading to get a better estimate of just how long it could take you to become an occupational therapist!

Choosing Your Path: MSOT vs. OTD

A Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) and an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) are both advanced degrees that qualify individuals for their OT licensure exam. However, they differ in their scope, depth, and the type of roles they prepare graduates for.

MSOT: A Foundation for Practice

An MSOT primarily prepares graduates for direct patient care in various settings. According to the , occupational therapists often work in hospitals, OT offices, schools, home health services, or nursing care facilities. A master鈥檚 degree program usually take 2 to 3 years to complete and emphasizes clinical skills, assessment techniques, and evidence-based practice. You can view our MSOT curriculum online.

OTD: A Scholarly Deep Dive

While an OTD also prepares graduates for clinical practice, a doctorate provides more in-depth preparation for scholarship and research. It typically provides a broader preparation for students who eventually want to become leaders, educators, or researchers in the field of OT. Check out the OTD curriculum.

Additionally, an OTD degree includes a capstone project that serves as a culminating experience, enabling students to take ownership of a large project through the phases of research, development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination. Read more about capstone projects at WCU.

How Long Is Occupational Therapy School at WCU

国产主播 offers both MSOT and OTD degrees. Here is a comparison of the two programs that can help you understand which option is right for you.

Other Factors to Consider

In addition to program length, there are a few other factors that might affect how long it takes you to become a licensed occupational therapist. While researching programs, consider the following:

  • Prior Education and Prerequisites
Do you meet all requirements in order to start the program right away? If you don鈥檛, you might need to take some courses before you can start your OT degree. Many programs will require a 4-year bachelor鈥檚 degree. Common majors that prepare students for an OT education include kinesiology, biology, or psychology. However, regardless of your major, you will have to ensure you鈥檝e completed any prerequisite courses. For example, if you wanted to apply to WCU鈥檚 MSOT program, you would have to ensure you鈥檝e taken classes in areas such as human anatomy, physiology, and human development. You can find all our prerequisites online.
  • Full-Time vs. Part-Time Schedules
Some OT programs will allow you to choose between being a full-time or part-time student. Part-time students will typically have a lighter course load per term, spreading out necessary coursework over a longer period of time. This is a great option if you work or juggle different responsibilities. However, it also extends the amount of time you need to complete your degree.
  • Routes for Students Without Bachelor鈥檚 Degrees
While OT programs typically require a bachelor鈥檚 degree, some schools offer routes for students who do not have an undergraduate degree. For example, some schools combine a bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 into one program. This could be a 6-year program that starts with bachelor-level classes and immediately segues into graduate courses. At 国产主播, we offer a pathway for occupational therapy assistants to earn their master鈥檚 degree without having to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree first. This allows students in the OT field to leverage their experience and pursue their education.

Breaking Down Your OT Degree

Now that you know about how long you鈥檒l be in school, you should know what you鈥檒l be doing during those years. Occupational therapy school might be challenging, but it鈥檚 also a rewarding and fulfilling experienced that鈥檚 focused on helping you become a capable and compassionate healthcare practitioner.

Here鈥檚 what you can expect from your WCU education:

  • Didactic Coursework
Study the theory and science behind occupational therapy in a traditional classroom setting. This includes 1-2 days per week of online classes for flexibility.
  • Simulation Experiences
Practice skills and gain confidence in a safe environment. Our campus at the Center for Graduate Studies includes a simulation center with an apartment set-up similar to what you鈥檒l encounter on the job.
  • Advanced Fieldwork Experiences
Both our MSOT and OTD programs include 24 credits of Fieldwork Level II experience to provide real-life experience.

After Graduation: One Final Step

Even after you complete your OT degree, you have one vital step left before you become an occupational therapist: Getting your license!

Graduates of WCU鈥檚 OT programs are eligible to sit for the national certification exam.

The (NBCOT) administers the exam to certify occupational therapists, ensuring that practitioners meet the knowledge standards needed to provide quality care for clients. Most states require licensure to practice, and state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification exam. , students report spending about 6 weeks studying and preparing for the exam.

Additionally, maintaining your occupational therapist license might involve keeping up with your education, including staying aware of emerging trends and research. This is done through Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The (AOTA) provides some helpful information about CEUs.

OTD vs. Other Healthcare Fields

You might also be wondering how long is occupational therapy school in comparison to other healthcare fields. Program lengths can vary widely from one university to the other. As a quick guide, here are the different program lengths for some of the graduate healthcare degrees offered at 国产主播.

Occupational therapy doctorate students from the 国产主播鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies embarked on a field trip to the Braille Institute in Los Angeles this summer.聽

This excursion offered an immersive experience that left a profound impact on the students, deepening their understanding of assistive technology and the practical challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments. The , located just a few blocks from the campus, is renowned for its extensive range of services for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.聽聽

Dr. Stephanie Esgro, an instructor with WCU鈥檚 OT program, explained the significance of the visit; “The Braille Institute provides resources that we don鈥檛 have direct access to at the university. It鈥檚 an invaluable opportunity for students to see and interact with the technology and techniques that support individuals with visual impairments.”聽

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to engage with a range of adaptive technologies and resources. The day began with a tour led by Alex Welter, the community outreach manager at the Braille Institute. The tour provided a comprehensive overview of the Institute鈥檚 offerings and facilities.

鈥淲e feel it is important for the OTD students to visit so they have a better understanding of all the services the Braille Institute provides,鈥 Welter said. 鈥淭he services provided by the Braille Institute might be a resource to them and their potential future patients. It is also important to expose the students to all possible career paths. We are part of the community and it鈥檚 good to know what services are available in their community.鈥

The field trip elicited strong reactions from the students, highlighting the profound impact of the experience. Many students described the visit as a pivotal moment in their education. Dr. Esgro noted that students were often surprised by the high costs of assistive technology and grateful for the free services provided by the Institute. This realization underscored the importance of the Braille Institute’s role in the community and motivated students to advocate for its services.

The partnership between the university and the Braille Institute has proven to be mutually beneficial. The field trip is not only a learning experience for students but also helps promote awareness of the Institute’s invaluable services. Dr. Esgro emphasized the importance of this relationship, noting that it offers students a chance to learn about a critical resource while supporting the Institute鈥檚 mission through advocacy and community outreach.

Occupational Therapy for Kids

You might have heard of occupational therapy as a great treatment option for adults dealing with injuries or illnesses, but did you know it鈥檚 also a great option for children? Occupational therapy, also known as OT, can be a game-changer for children facing developmental, sensory, or physical challenges.

By focusing on therapeutic activities, OT helps build skills, boost confidence, and develop the ability to thrive in school and beyond. Keep reading to learn more about how occupational therapy for kids can make a difference in children鈥檚 development!

What Is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy for kids 鈥 often referred to as pediatric occupational therapy 鈥 is a kind of therapy that helps children develop the skills they need for daily living and independence. It often focuses on improving fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and sensory processing abilities. The goal is to meet children where they are and help them achieve their full potential. This means helping them engage in school and participate in the activities they enjoy, whether this is sports, arts and crafts, or socializing.

Many children can benefit from OT, including kids with:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Developmental delays or learning disabilities
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills or gross motor skills
  • Injuries that might affect motor skills
  • Trauma or anxiety

Occupational therapy can greatly help children who are struggling in school or having trouble with social skills, as it focuses on giving them the functional strategies they need to overcome obstacles and gain independence. This can in turn help them flourish as they develop confidence over time.

Signs Your Child Might Benefit From OT

Your child鈥檚 pediatrician or healthcare provider can help you determine if occupational therapy is the right choice. In general, occupational therapy for kids can help in cases where a child exhibits:

  • Difficulty with fine motor skills (such as using scissors or holding a pencil)
  • Trouble with gross motor skills (such as difficulty running or jumping)
  • Over- or under-sensitivity to certain textures or sounds
  • Difficulty with self-care skills
  • Trouble with social skills

While these are just general guidelines, OT can often help kids in all of these areas, giving them the tools to overcome struggles.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy can be a key tool in helping children on the autism spectrum meet milestones and reach their full potential. OT does this by aiding them in different areas where they might struggle, including:

  • Sensory processing: Through a variety of activities, occupational therapists can develop custom plans to address sensory processing difficulties common in autism, helping kids navigate their environment and reduce sensory overload.

  • Daily living Skills: OT can address skills needed for independent daily living, such as dressing, eating, or personal hygiene.
  • Motor skills: OT exercises can provide focused support to help children improve coordination, balance, tool use, and motor planning. This can help with a wide variety of activities, including writing and using utensils.
  • Social skills: OT can help develop non-verbal communication skills through structured activities and play. It can help teach children how to take turns, understand emotions, engage in play, and more skills they will need in order to interact with peers.
  • Behavioral regulation: Occupational therapy can also provide strategies to help children regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, and improve focus.聽
  • Adaptive techniques and tools: If needed, occupational therapists show kids how to use adaptive equipment and techniques, such as visual schedules or specialized learning tools.

Occupational therapy can greatly support kids with autism by addressing all these areas, helping empower children to participate more fully in their lives and engage in the activities they love.

The Role of an Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists are at the core of successful therapy. They create individualized plans for each child鈥檚 needs, incorporating a variety of techniques, including play-based activities and sensory integration. They鈥檒l work closely with parents and caregivers to develop strategies for supporting the child鈥檚 development at home. Additionally, occupational therapists will collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists and speech therapists, to provide comprehensive client-centered care.

Occupational therapists go through rigorous training in order to deliver evidence-based care. They need at least a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) to be eligible for their OT license, although many choose to pursue an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD).

If you鈥檙e interested in becoming an occupational therapists, WCU offers both an MSOT and an OTD program at our WCU-Center for Graduate Studies campus in Los Angeles! Reserve your seat at one of our upcoming info sessions to learn more. RSVP now!

During sessions, kids might also interact with occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) who might help them through exercises, provide instructions, or measure their progress.

What to Expect During an OT Session

You might have a better idea of what to expect from an OT session designed for adults. They鈥檒l include exercises and stretches meant to help movement as well as recommendations and instructions from your occupational therapist. Occupational therapy for kids looks almost the same, except it includes different kinds of games or toys designed to help them develop skills.

The length and frequency of OT sessions will vary depending on a child鈥檚 need. They could be as quick as 30 minutes once a week or as often as 60-minute sessions multiple times per week. Your occupational therapist will be able to provide recommendations based on a plan tailored specifically for your child.

How to Get Started With Occupational Therapy

The first step in order to access occupational therapy is to consult with your child鈥檚 pediatrician or healthcare provider. They will help you determine if OT is right for your kid.

According to the , occupational therapists often work in specialized OT clinics, in elementary and secondary schools, or in home healthcare services. Depending on your situation, you might be able to access OT services through schools or you might have to find a local occupational therapy clinic or private practice.

Additionally, you should always contact your health insurance provider to determine if occupational therapy is covered under your plan.

Occupational Therapy

If you鈥檙e looking for rewarding healthcare fields where you can work one-on-one with clients, you might have heard of occupational therapy (OT). Professionals in this field work directly with clients to improve their quality of life. Aspiring occupational therapists need at least a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) degree to get started 鈥 but exactly what is occupational therapy?

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a field within healthcare dedicated to helping individuals with injuries, illnesses, or disabilities perform the tasks (or occupations) they need in daily living. OT promotes health and well-being by helping people carry out the activities that matter most to them 鈥 from dressing themselves to participating in hobbies.

An occupational therapist, for example, could help a stroke victim regain fine motor skills. They can work with children who have cognitive disabilities to get them integrated with their peers. They could also provide adaptive eating technology to help clients enjoy meals independently.

Occupational Therapists: The Professionals Making It All Possible

At the core of effective OT practice are the occupational therapists who work one-on-one with their clients to identify goals, create personalized plans, and track progress. They are the heart and soul of the profession, providing individualized care every step of the way.

According to the ,1 some of the tasks occupational therapists perform include:

  • Evaluating a client鈥檚 condition (which can include reviewing their medical histories and observing them perform various tasks)
  • Developing treatment plans that align with client goals
  • Demonstrating exercises for clients
  • Recommending special equipment and providing instructions on how to use it

Becoming a Pharmacist

Embarking on a career as a pharmacist offers a unique blend of healthcare expertise and
patient-centered care. Each day, pharmacists work to ensure medication safety, effectively
communicate with patients, and provide essential medication counseling.

If you鈥檙e curious about becoming a pharmacist, you should know that they do much more than
hand off medications and verify insurance coverage. A pharmacy career also doesn鈥檛 confine
you to working in retail settings alone. In fact, pharmacists engage in a combination of
administrative, technical, and people-centered tasks, and are found within the :

  • Academic Pharmacists
  • Ambulatory Care Pharmacists
  • Clinical Pharmacists
  • Consultant Pharmacists
  • Hospital Pharmacists
  • Industrial Pharmacists

Before you begin working towards this career, consider these five key elements of becoming a pharmacist. These crucial factors allow you to better weigh each aspect of this demanding 鈥 yet rewarding 鈥 healthcare career.

1. What Pharmacists Really Do: Roles and Responsibilities

The answer to the question 鈥渨hat does a pharmacist do?鈥 might surprise you. That鈥檚 because
pharmacists carry out tasks beyond just managing medications and communicating with patients.
In their day-to-day work, pharmacists may perform such as conducting quality assurance, overseeing pharmacy operations, optimizing patient medication dosages, communicating drug interactions to colleagues, and/or participating in clinical trials for a new medication brand.

2. Educational Requirements for Pharmacists

Regardless of the type of pharmacist you want to become, you need to earn a minimum of a
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) to serve as a licensed pharmacist.
However, your education is one portion of the larger picture, meaning you鈥檒l also need to gain hands-on experience, pass the , and take state-specific licensing exams. While the specific requirements for becoming a pharmacist vary from state to state, the general path is the same:

  1. Complete prerequisite coursework in areas such as math and science.
  2. Gain optional hands-on experience in the healthcare field. While enrolled as an undergraduate or transitioning to a graduate program, you should take on an internship, volunteer, or shadow a licensed pharmacist to bolster your chances of being admitted to a PharmD program.
  3. Earn your Doctor of Pharmacy degree. This postgraduate degree generally takes four years to complete; however, some accelerated PharmD programs allow you to graduate in as little as three years.
  4. Enroll in a residency. While optional, residency programs can make or break your pharmacy career as they provide you with networking opportunities, advanced clinical training, and preparation for certifications beyond your PharmD program.
  5. Study and pass the NAPLEX. This is a six-hour exam delivered in a computerized form. It covers several major areas of pharmacy practice, which are divided into six sections.
  6. Apply for state licensure in the state where you intend to practice. Prepare to provide information such as your transcripts, relevant exam scores, and additional documentation.
  7. Maintain licensure. Your state’s board of pharmacy mandates that you periodically renew your relevant pharmacist licenses. This typically involves enrolling in continuing education (CE) credits or hours.

3. Skills and Traits of a Successful Pharmacist

Early on, you should familiarize yourself with the essential skills and traits required to thrive in this healthcare field. While you don鈥檛 have to have these qualities, developing them can significantly benefit your career. Take a look at the pharmacists need to succeed:

It鈥檚 vital to remember that if you鈥檙e just starting in a PharmD program or still deciding which one
to choose, don鈥檛 get discouraged by the requirements. Advancements in science continually
evolve the pharmacy field, requiring licensed pharmacists鈥攋ust like new students鈥攖o constantly
brush up on their skills. Try to build on your strengths and bear in mind that a strong thirst for
learning can get you far in your career.

4. You鈥檒l Engage in Dynamic Work

Pharmacists, especially those in retail settings, are constantly on the move checking inventory,
filling prescriptions, interacting with customers, and leading teams. It鈥檚 a dynamic profession that
keeps you occupied throughout your shift.
Some retail pharmacists might also work weekend shifts to meet the diverse healthcare needs
of their community 鈥 which can mean responding to an uptick in influenza variants or the rapid
onset of seasonal allergies brought on by weather changes.
Because populations depend on these healthcare professionals, pharmacists stay both mentally
sharp and physically fit. A career as a pharmacist is a perfect match for individuals who thrive in
an active role.

5. Lifestyle Considerations for a Pharmacist Career

If you already understand the educational requirements for becoming a pharmacist, now is the time to reflect on how the profession’s demands might align with your personal commitments and lifestyle. Assess factors such as job prospects, evolving work environments, work-life balance, and ongoing education needs to determine if pursuing this health career is right for you.

Lawrence L.鈥檚 path in occupational therapy has always been shaped by a blend of academic interests and a desire to make a meaningful impact.

His journey into OT began in high school, where he was drawn to classes related to health and human sciences. This interest solidified during his undergraduate studies.

“I took more classes, specifically on kinesiology, and it kind of reignited the fire and the drive in me,” he recalled. The coursework not only piqued his interest but also gave him the confidence to commit to a master’s program.

Choosing the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program at 国产主播 was a deliberate decision for Lawrence. He found that the university offered a robust program that stood out from others he considered.

“West Coast has a really good program. I heard a lot of good things about 国产主播 compared to other schools,” he explained. The combination of positive reviews and manageable costs made WCU the right fit for him.

The practical aspects of his education were particularly rewarding for Lawrence. He enjoys the hands-on experiences that prepare him for real-life scenarios in occupational therapy.

“My favorite part about my education, I would say, probably like the practicals, actually learning how to help people efficiently and effectively,” he says with enthusiasm. These practical sessions have not only been educational but also fun, providing him with a sense of accomplishment and readiness for his future career.

As he looks ahead to his graduation in December, Lawrence is focused on making a difference in the field of occupational therapy. He emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and helping people with disabilities participate fully in society.

“I think, like everyone else, once we graduate, we want to really help people get back to the things that they like to do because we’re all about being inclusive,” he stated. This goal reflects his commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the activities they love.

In advising future students who are considering the MSOT program at WCU, Lawrence stressed the importance of dedication.

“It is a huge commitment, and you should think about it before committing to the program,” he advised. However, he is confident that with passion and hard work, anyone can succeed. “If you put in the work, anyone can complete it or finish the program if you really love what you do.”
