Bilirubin is a yellow-orange pigment produced by the breakdown of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It is processed by the liver and excreted into bile, eventually being eliminated from the body in feces. Elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood can lead to jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes.
