From Survivor to Advocate: How One Alumna Found Her Calling in Oncology

Cynthia C., BSN ’24, never expected her life to look like it does today. After being diagnosed with stage III cancer, everything shifted in an instant. Yet, this challenging experience became the catalyst for a new, purposeful journey.

“Cancer gave me a second chance at life,” Cynthia reflected. “Now, I understand my purpose. If I wasn’t sure before, I am now.”

During her chemotherapy treatment, Cynthia was supported by a nurse-patient navigator who played a vital role in her recovery. At the time, Cynthia was also pregnant with her sixth child, a situation that deepened her appreciation for the healthcare professionals around her.

“After going through chemo and meeting other patients, I told my mom I wanted to work in oncology,” she shared. “My goal was to pay it forward.”

Cynthia started working in an administrative role in a hospital’s oncology unit, where an oncologist saw potential in her and encouraged her to pursue nursing.

“He kept telling me I would make a great nurse,” she recalled. “’You empathize with the patients,’ he said. ‘You genuinely care.’”

Her determination to help cancer patients soon became her life’s mission. Despite having no prior healthcare experience, Cynthia found the work to be instinctive.

“Having gone through cancer myself, I can truly empathize with all of them,” she said. “It’s incredibly fulfilling.”

Cynthia enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at ��’s Los Angeles campus, graduating with cum laude honors this past July. Balancing full-time work, her studies, and raising six children as a single mother was no small feat.

“I didn’t have a single day off,” she said. “Every day was either work, school, or clinical, and I still had to go home and be a mom.”

Despite the challenges, Cynthia is grateful for her experience at WCU and the supportive community of students and faculty.

“I’m so thankful for the experience and proud to be a part of West Coast,” she said. “The staff and students I met still stay in touch. It’s like a family.”

Armed with her BSN degree, Cynthia is more committed than ever to helping others navigate their cancer diagnoses. Having lost her aunt to cancer as a teenager, she understands the pain and uncertainty that comes with the disease.

Today, she has become a trusted resource in her community, offering support, advocacy, and encouragement to anyone who reaches out.

“Cancer isn’t something you can cover with a bandage. Many people don’t know where to turn,” Cynthia said.

Cynthia’s goal is to become a nurse practitioner and continue her work in oncology. The relationships she forms with her patients give her work profound meaning.

“I see myself in them,” she said. “We’re all afraid of the unknown, but having someone to hold your hand and guide you makes it a little easier. It lets them know they’re not alone.”

Looking to make a career switch from a licensed occupational therapy assistant (OTA) to a licensed occupational therapist (OT)? If you’re already a practicing OTA, you should know that many Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs allow you to transition into an OT role in less than two years — without needing a bachelor’s degree.

Read on to learn more about what this transition from OTA to OT entails, how your responsibilities will shift, and if this career advancement is the right fit for you.

What is an Occupational Therapy Assistant?

An is a licensed healthcare professional who works under the supervision of an occupational therapist to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. OTAs play a hands-on role in patient care, working directly with a healthcare team to implement treatment plans that promote recovery and enhance each patient’s quality of life.

To practice, occupational therapy assistants must earn a minimum of an associate degree along with national and state licensure.

Key Responsibilities of an OTA:

Occupational therapy assistants conduct more than just daily, routine tasks like checking in on their patients, reporting on a patient’s progress to an OT, and educating families or caregivers. OTAs typically work in hospitals, educational institutions, and home care settings. Some of their include:

Enhancing Mobility: OTAs help patients improve their range of motion, balance, and ability to walk. This can include stretching, strength training, or walking on a treadmill to not only increase their strength and coordination but also help them gain the confidence they deserve.
Assisting with Daily Living: OTAs support their patients in performing essential daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and grooming. They help them develop personalized strategies and adaptive equipment like grab bars or dressing aids to help them manage their daily lives.
Managing Pain: Along with teaching patients how to improve mobility, OTAs may focus on teaching their patients how to use their bodies properly to help them avoid pain or overexertion. While OTAs are not qualified to prescribe medication, they can help manage pain by using assistive devices such as splints, braces, or gait trainers.
Supporting Mental Health: An OTA can help patients achieve the mental health goals created by an OT, as well as monitor and report their progress. To support their patients’ mental health, they may help them develop coping strategies like deep-breathing exercises or create structured routines. OTAs can also lend an empathic ear to help build a patient relationship built on trust and respect.
Improving Cognitive Function: Occupational therapy assistants can help their patients improve cognitive function by teaching them rehearsal techniques such as memory encoding, retention, and retrieval. They may also employ external memory aids such as calendars or reminder apps to help them remember important events or appointments.

What is an Occupational Therapist?

An is a licensed healthcare professional who assesses, plans, and oversees comprehensive treatment plans to help patients overcome day-to-day challenges across all areas of life.

Unlike OTAs, OTs have a higher degree of authority to independently evaluate patients, develop personalized treatment plans, and make critical decisions regarding patient care. While occupational therapists have the expertise to perform these tasks alone, they typically collaborate with OTAs to deliver coordinated services that ensure effective patient outcomes.

To practice in most states, OTs need a minimum of a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) along with national and state certification.

Occupational therapists can handle the same routines and specialized tasks that occupational therapy assistants can; however, they primarily differ in their tasks because they have the ability to oversee the entire therapeutic process. This means that they lead and coordinate multidisciplinary healthcare teams by following evidence-based practices.

Below are a few key occupational therapist responsibilities:

Supervise and Mentor OTAs: Providing guidance and oversight to OTAs, OTs ensure that therapeutic interventions are executed correctly and effectively. They also mentor OTAs by offering training, feedback, and support.
Create Treatment Plans: OTs design comprehensive, individualized treatment plans based on thorough assessments of each patient’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs. Each unique plan outlines specific goals along with the therapeutic activities required to achieve them.
Sign Off on Progress Assessments: Progress reports and assessments completed by OTAs are thoroughly evaluated for accuracy and approved by OTs. Analyzing patient data helps determine the effectiveness of treatment plans, highlights necessary adjustments, and, most importantly, determines if patients are achieving their rehabilitation goals. This oversight is critical for facilities to maintain best practices.
Consult with Healthcare Professionals: OTs collaborate with a wide range of healthcare professionals, including physicians, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and social workers, to coordinate comprehensive care for their patients. The difference in cross-team collaboration between OTAs and OTs is that while OTAs can collaborate with other healthcare members, they must do so under the direction of OTs.

Deciding if you should go from an OTA to an OT comes down to a variety of factors. For one, if you want more autonomy in the workplace, then a career jump to a licensed OT will allow you to make more independent decisions in your practice. An OTA to OT pathway bridges the gap between your current role as an OTA and becoming a licensed OT. If you’ve already been working as an OTA, this means you’ll be able to use your professional experience to quickly earn your OT qualifications and start practicing.

From Mental Health Technician to MSOT Alumni at ��

Carlos C., a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) graduate at ��, prepares to take his next steps in healthcare. From working as a mental health technician to pursuing his passion for occupational therapy, Carlos has spent years honing his skills and deepening his commitment to serving others. Now in his final trimester of didactic coursework, he’s ready to translate his classroom experience into meaningful, real-world impact.

“Occupational therapy has always been a lifelong mission for me,” he said. Originally from Pomona, California, Carlos is currently in his fourth and final trimester of didactic coursework. His next step? Fieldwork rotations, where he plans to bring his classroom and life experiences to life.

Carlos’ path to �� wasn’t a straight line. Before enrolling, he worked as a mental health technician at a psychiatric hospital in Glendora, where he supported patients with psychiatric disorders in their daily activities. This experience highlighted gaps in care that he believes occupational therapy can bridge. “Seeing those gaps made me want to apply to graduate school,” he said.

His motivation to serve others stems from his upbringing. “My mom was a caregiver, and growing up around my grandparents really shaped my desire to help,” Carlos explained. His passion for occupational therapy was solidified when he recognized OT’s potential to support physical and mental health needs.

Carlos emphasized his commitment to inpatient care. “I want to work in inpatient facilities where I can see people at their worst and help them get better,” he said. In the long term, he aims to start a home health company to continue providing holistic care.

“I knew there wasn’t anywhere I would rather work than at WCU,” said Amanda Woolery, a nursing instructor who earned her Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from WCU in 2018 and 2021, respectively. “I had such a wonderful experience here as a student, it was only natural that I would want to come back to my ‘home’ to teach the next generation and bring it full circle.”

Alumni faculty embody WCU’s commitment to creating lifelong connections, where students become professionals and then mentors, each generation inspiring the next.

Valerie Cromwell-Perry, who earned her Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) from WCU in 2020, was encouraged by her professor to return to the university as a lab assistant, which ultimately led to her becoming an assistant professor in the OT department.

“As a mentor, I see my role as one of guiding and nurturing students’ growth and understanding,” Valerie said. “I consult with my students on the first day of class to better understand their preferred learning styles — fostering a richer learning experience.”

Graduates Celebrate 2024 �� Commencement at Plano Events Center

Graduates from ��’s Texas campus and Online Programs gathered in front of friends and families this December at the Plano Event Center to celebrate the 2024 Commencement.

Master of Physician Assistant graduate Anthony I. said he always wanted to be in medicine, either as a doctor or a PA but wanted flexibility. As a PA, he said, you can switch specialties whenever you desire — and that’s what really sold him on the profession.

“I never felt like a number at ��,” Anthony said. “I felt like they saw me as a person, and today, I’m most thankful to be completing my master’s program.”

Already a licensed vocational nurse for over a decade, WCU-Texas BSN graduate Courtney W. was driven to earn the registered nurse title to unlock better career prospects.

“I was making good money in California, but I didn’t have that RN title. I didn’t go straight to college right after high school, so it’s never too late,” she said.

A former Baylor University undergraduate with a degree in health science studies, Emma T. said she was drawn to the PA profession for its team-oriented approach and versatility.

“I never thought I’d be standing here. I think it’s just something I’ve dreamed about and worked so hard for,” Emma said. “I know that this program prepared me well I was surrounded by such great friends and classmates and faculty that they never let me doubt myself.”

From California to Texas: BSN Graduate Reflects on Her Path to Nursing at ��

Originally from California, Esther N. initially planned to attend the university’s campus in Anaheim until learning about the advantages of moving to the Lone Star State.

“I originally heard about �� from California because that’s where I was living previously,” she said. “But then I found out that Texas is actually a cheaper option, and I decided to move to Texas.”

The transition from California to Texas was made smoother by ��’s support, Esther explained. Despite never having visited the Texas campus before her move, she described her first impression as overwhelmingly positive.

“When I first stepped foot on the campus, I thought it was beautiful; it took my breath away,” she said.

Esther’s decision to pursue nursing stemmed from personal experiences.

“I picked nursing because when I was young, I often spent most of my time in the hospital, and the nurses made it such a wonderful place to be that I didn’t even want to leave,” Esther said.

She was determined to share that same compassion and care with her future patients.

Adjusting to life in Texas was a surprisingly smooth experience for Esther.

“I adjusted really well, actually. I’m very grateful that I moved because I got to have family here, and I’m not going back anytime soon,” she said.

She recommended Dallas as a vibrant place to live, adding, “The food is great, the culture is great, the people are good. It’s a wonderful place to live — not in the summer, though!”

Esther reflected on the strong relationships she built at ��.

“My relationship with my classmates was amazing; I found my forever family in nursing school,” she said. “Relationships with the professors and faculty were also really good because, at West Coast, they value student input, so communication was always flowing.”

As for her preparation for the nursing field, she credited the university’s rigorous support.

“West Coast prepared me amazingly for the NCLEX and for nursing as a whole,” she said.

At her pinning ceremony, Esther celebrated her achievements and offered advice to future students: “You can’t do nursing school alone, so find that family or friend that you can rely on because it is going to get tough. Use your resources early and remember why you started nursing school.”
