Faith P.鈥檚 path to becoming an occupational therapy doctorate student at 国产主播鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies wasn鈥檛 always clear. Her journey, which began with a kinesiology degree, has now led her to a program she is passionate about 鈥 and one that is helping her build the career she always dreamed of.

Faith鈥檚 love for the human body and its systems started early. She pursued a bachelor鈥檚 in kinesiology at another university, knowing she wanted a career that allowed her to understand and work with the body. It wasn鈥檛 until she met a friend 鈥 someone who had already graduated from her alma mater 鈥 that she first learned about occupational therapy.

鈥淪he was in the process of coming back for some additional credits to pursue the master鈥檚 program [at West Coast],鈥 Faith explained. 鈥淲e got to talking, and she introduced me to the world of OT. She raved about it, and as she shared more, I just fell in love with the idea.鈥

This conversation sparked something in Faith. It was her friend鈥檚 enthusiasm for OT and her own deep interest in human health that made Faith take the leap and apply for the OT program at WCU-CGS.

鈥淪he told me the program was amazing, and that West Coast had a great track record with the NBCOT exam,鈥 Faith recalled. 鈥淭hat was really what sold me, knowing the program was designed to help me succeed.鈥

Faith was also pleasantly surprised by the support and resources available at WCU-CGS, which exceeded her expectations.

鈥淚 never expected to have so many opportunities to connect with people,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he resources, the community 鈥 it鈥檚 all beyond what I imagined. I鈥檓 not just learning a profession; I鈥檓 building long-lasting relationships and a career that I never thought I could create.鈥

One of the most rewarding aspects of Faith鈥檚 experience has been the strong sense of community she鈥檚 found at WCU-CGS.

鈥淭he connections I鈥檝e made have been crucial to my success,鈥 she shared. 鈥淔rom the moment I stepped on campus, I鈥檝e felt like I鈥檓 part of something bigger than myself.鈥

Faith鈥檚 cohort has become like a family. 鈥淲e talk every day, even outside of school. It鈥檚 not just about OT. We鈥檝e really become close friends,鈥 she added.

She鈥檚 also been able to build relationships with faculty, mentors, and other students through various leadership roles. Faith serves as a coordinator for Peer Assisted Learning (PALs), where upper-term students mentor newer cohorts, helping them with practical exams and study sessions.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an amazing experience,鈥 Faith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like I鈥檓 giving back what I鈥檝e learned, and it鈥檚 been a great way to connect with other students.鈥

In addition, Faith is the president of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, where she works alongside other student leaders to promote community engagement, fundraising, and wellness for OT students.

鈥淚 never expected to be president of SOTA,鈥 she laughed. 鈥淏ut I had the support of my community. They encouraged me to step into this leadership role, and with their help, I鈥檝e been able to succeed.鈥

In contrast to her undergrad experience, WCU-CGS has provided Faith with a clear and structured path.

鈥淭hey gave me everything I needed 鈥 classes, timelines, even resources like the library and fieldwork coordinators,鈥 Faith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been so much more organized and supportive than my undergrad experience. I feel like I finally have the guidance I need.鈥

For anyone considering a career in occupational therapy, Faith had some wise advice: 鈥淛ust go for it. Don鈥檛 doubt yourself. It鈥檚 hard work, but you can do hard things.鈥

国产主播 nursing student Genie R. was recently recognized with the prestigious Daisy Award, honoring her compassionate care and poise during a critical moment in her clinical rotation. The BSN student, who is set to graduate later in 2025, was surprised with the award during class 鈥 completely unaware she had even been nominated.

The moment that sparked Rene鈥檚 nomination happened during a clinical rotation in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, when a pediatric patient went into cardiac arrest. Though still a student, Rene instinctively jumped into action 鈥 supporting the medical team, gathering supplies, and anticipating needs, all while staying within her scope of practice.

鈥淚t was just like a nice flow with the unit,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hank God that in skills and in the simulation lab they teach you the proper names for the tools and materials that we need.鈥

For Rene, the experience was a powerful validation of the simulation-based training she received at WCU, which she credits with helping her stay composed in a high-stress situation.

鈥淪IM is extremely important. It came in handy during the code while in clinicals,鈥 she said.

Rene鈥檚 motivation to pursue nursing is deeply personal. Her mother鈥檚 long battle with illness shaped her understanding of what compassionate care truly looks like. She still remembers a particular nurse who made an impression not just for how she cared for her mother, but for how she treated Rene as well.

鈥淪he didn鈥檛 only give attention to my mom, but also to me,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he always made sure her linen was clean… she brought that extra step or extra care that was not part of her scope, but she did it anyway.鈥

Rene hopes to bring that same energy to her future patients.

鈥淚 treat patients like they’re my family,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just hope that I’m remembered as, 鈥極h my gosh, she went the extra mile.鈥欌

Even as many in the field move away from bedside nursing, Rene remains committed.

鈥淭hey remember your name. They remember what you did for them when you bring that extra care,鈥 she said.

With her heart set on making a difference, Rene鈥檚 journey is just beginning 鈥 but she鈥檚 already leaving a lasting impression.

8 Nurse Leader Skills to Master

What sets a good nurse apart from a great one? While possessing strong clinical skills can sometimes be enough to provide quality patient care, it鈥檚 excellent leadership skills that make the difference.

In fact, being a nurse . The profession demands a combination of hard skills, like foundational clinical knowledge, and soft skills, such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking. A highly competent nurse leader understands how to balance technical proficiency with interpersonal skills. This balance allows them to create a supportive, efficient healthcare environment where both their patients and team members feel valued.

Why Are Nurse Leadership Skills Important?

Strong nurse leaders are at the heart of effective healthcare teams. They advocate for patients, support their colleagues, and drive meaningful change within their organizations.

The right leadership skills ensure that nurses:

  • Strengthen patient safety by reducing errors
  • Deliver high-quality patient care
  • Improve operational efficiency for better patient outcomes
  • Maintain workplace morale and retain skilled nursing staff
  • Promote continuous learning

For registered nurses looking to transition into leadership roles鈥攚hether through a Post-Master鈥檚 Certificate program, MSN program, or RN-to-MSN program鈥攎astering key clinical and interpersonal skills is crucial for success. Keep reading to learn about the eight essential leadership skills every nurse needs to thrive.

What Clinical Skills Should Nurse Leaders Have?

Nurses must be confident in their clinical experience while also making sure that their teams adhere to the best medical practices. An accredited nursing program prepares nurses to uphold patient safety, think critically in high-pressure situations, and implement practical healthcare solutions when it matters most. Here are a few clinical skills successful nurse leaders should have:

1. Strong Clinical Decision-Making

Providing quality patient care starts with good decision-making. Even if nurse leaders aren鈥檛 at the bedside, their experience plays a major role in guiding teams. They must be able to assess patient conditions, interpret medical data, and empower their colleagues to make the best possible decisions.

A solid clinical foundation also helps nurse leaders spot early warning signs of complications and support nurses handling complex cases. Quick thinking and experience-based confidence in their expertise allows nurses to maintain high standards of care, even in fast-paced environments.

2. Crisis Management

No two days in healthcare are the same. Medical emergencies, staffing shortages, and unexpected crises require nurses who can react without delay and stay calm under pressure. When every second counts, a great nurse leader can make all the difference. These professionals must know how to prioritize patient care, coordinate emergency response efforts across multiple departments, and train staff on protocols to ensure team preparedness. Whether it’s a cardiac arrest or a severe asthma attack, strong crisis management skills save lives.

3. Healthcare Technology Proficiency

Modern healthcare relies on technology, and nurses must be competent when using digital tools. From electronic health records (EHRs) to telemedicine, understanding digital tools goes far. Being tech-savvy allows nurses to improve documentation accuracy, adopt new digital tools that can optimize workflow, and use data to track patient progress.

4. Infection Control & Patient Safety Protocols

Keeping patients safe is at the core of nursing, which is why infection control is a shared responsibility across healthcare teams. Every nurse works to prevent infections and reduce risks by setting high standards and consistently following safety protocols. However, nurse leaders take on additional responsibilities to uphold safety compliance, educate colleagues on best practices, and implement strategies to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

What Soft Skills Should Nurse Leaders Have?

Beyond clinical expertise, great nurse leaders must also have compelling interpersonal and leadership skills. These soft skills help them foster teamwork, build trust, and create a positive work environment鈥攗ltimately leading to better patient care. Take a look at several key soft skills every nurse leader should develop:

5. Effective Communication

Nurse leaders often act as bridges between teams, which is why direct, confident communication is a must-have for organizational success. On a daily basis, they鈥檙e expected to give clear instructions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and educate patients and families.

6. Critical Thinking

In healthcare, every decision matters. Nurses need sharp problem-solving skills to navigate difficult situations, make data-driven choices, and anticipate challenges before they arise.

Sound critical thinking allows them to make informed decisions in high-pressure situations and identify opportunities for process improvement. Excellent nurse leaders stand out by seeing situations from different perspectives and making decisive choices.

7. Time Management

With countless responsibilities, nurses must know how to prioritize tasks and delegate wisely, all while keeping their units running smoothly. Balancing urgent demands while maintaining a steady workflow helps them support both their patients and teams. Good time management not only improves efficiency but also prevents any potential staff burnout.

8. Emotional Intelligence

Exceptional leadership extends beyond clinical expertise. Nurses must understand and support both their patients and staff, which is why emotional intelligence is so critical.

High emotional intelligence allows nurses to:

  • Nurture a team culture rooted in respect
  • Provide support to patients and staff by preemptively recognizing their needs
  • Navigate and resolve conflicts effectively鈥攅specially in high-stress situations
  • Lead with compassion, offering guidance to patients and families during difficult times

Take the Next Step in Your Nursing Career

Great nurses do more than care for patients鈥攖hey influence, inspire, and lead by example. That鈥檚 why 国产主播 (WCU) offers multiple nurse leadership programs to help you grow:

For Emma T., graduating with a Master of Physician Assistant (MPA) degree from 国产主播 marks the culmination of years of effort, perseverance, and a deep love for medicine. Standing proudly in her graduation regalia, Emma reflected on the significance of the moment.

鈥淚t blows my mind, actually,鈥 Emma said. 鈥淚 never thought I鈥檇 be standing here. This is something I鈥檝e dreamed about and worked so hard for.鈥

A Baylor University undergraduate with a degree in health science studies, Emma knew early on that she wanted to pursue a career as a physician assistant. She was drawn to the PA profession for its team-oriented approach and versatility.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to go to medical school 鈥 I鈥檓 not the type of person who needs the title or to be the top dog in the room,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 team-oriented, and I love that PAs have the ability to learn constantly, switch fields, and provide intentional, patient-centered care.鈥

While the program was rigorous, Emma found joy in the challenges and camaraderie of her peers and faculty.

鈥淭he hardest part wasn鈥檛 the material itself 鈥 I loved learning medicine, and it clicked for me,鈥 Emma said. 鈥淭he challenge was figuring out what kind of provider I want to be. Medicine isn鈥檛 black and white. We always talk about the 鈥榓rt of medicine,鈥 where two things can be true, and you have to work with both to give the best care.鈥

Emma also highlighted the positive culture within her program. As a student leader, she played a role in shaping that experience.

鈥淥ur faculty really care about us as people, providers, and now colleagues,鈥 she said. 鈥淭heir investment in us made us want to be great.鈥

As for her next steps, Emma hopes to work in pediatric surgery, where she will assist in procedures, conduct hospital rounds, and manage clinic visits.

鈥淚 love the mix of surgery, hospital work, and clinic 鈥 it keeps me on my toes,鈥 she explained. Emma advises future PA students to savor the experience, even when it feels overwhelming.

鈥淟ean in and lean on the people around you,鈥 she urged. 鈥淪tart every day with a mindset of learning something new, even if it鈥檚 hard. You鈥檒l grow as a person and a provider.鈥

Now, with her white coat and the world of medicine ahead, Emma is thrilled as she prepares for her board exams and a new career.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to start this next chapter and see who else I can help in the future,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is the start of something amazing.鈥

鈥淭here was a point where I thought I was done,鈥 Queenstar admitted. 鈥淚 said to myself, 鈥業鈥檓 not going any further.鈥 But one professor told me, 鈥榊ou are not quitting. You will get through this.鈥 That encouragement pushed me to keep going.鈥

Failing a class was a tough blow, but Queenstar viewed it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. She found strength in the camaraderie of her peers, particularly her new study group.听

鈥淲e studied together, held each other鈥檚 hands, and sometimes met in coffee shops to keep pushing through,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey even called me 鈥榞randma鈥 because I was always pushing them, even if they were sleeping!鈥

Queenstar also leaned heavily on the tools and resources offered by WCU.

鈥淭he professors were amazing, and I took full advantage of the resources. I met with professors one-on-one, joined study groups, and used every tool the school had to offer,鈥 she shared.

Her perseverance didn鈥檛 go unnoticed by her family, who traveled from Canada, New York, and Connecticut to celebrate her graduation. 鈥淭hey are waiting to scream when I cross the stage,鈥 she said proudly.

Looking ahead to 2025, Queenstar is ready to reenter the workforce and make a difference as a nurse. She also plans to pursue her master鈥檚 degree.

国产主播鈥檚 Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is all about empowering students to make a real impact on people鈥檚 lives. For Lilia F., that meant relocating from Northern California to Southern California to join 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies. Drawn by the supportive faculty and welcoming community, she鈥檚 found her place here, sharing how WCU has fueled her passion for physical therapy and helped her grow in ways she hadn鈥檛 expected.听

Personal Inspiration

Lilia鈥檚 passion for physical therapy began with a deeply personal experience. Her love for sports and activities made physical therapy an ideal career path.

鈥淲hat got me into PT was actually seeing my brother go through it when I was younger, and he wasn鈥檛 fully able-bodied,鈥 she explained, reflecting on her younger years. 鈥淪eeing how the physical therapist kind of engaged him into getting back into activity and helping him get his motivation back… really brought to light at a young age that helping people is what I wanted to do.鈥

Choosing 国产主播

Lilia鈥檚 search for the right DPT program led her to WCU, where she felt a unique connection with the faculty and the student community.

鈥淚 knew I wanted to stay in California,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I met the professors and interacted with them鈥 they were the ones that really showed the most care to their students.鈥 The compassion and dedication of the faculty have proven invaluable. 鈥淚 can say most of those professors were the reasons why we continued and didn鈥檛 give up.鈥

Support from Faculty

Throughout her journey, Lilia has felt deeply supported by her professors, who have cultivated an encouraging and understanding environment. She noted one professor’s approach, saying, 鈥淗e felt the energy that we were feeling in the room. He felt the nerves; he felt the anxiety. And he took the time to speak with us and tell us, you know, 鈥楧o your best, and that鈥檚 all that should matter.鈥欌 These reassurances have helped her, and her cohort gain the confidence to succeed.

A Cohort That Feels Like Family

The support within Lilia鈥檚 cohort has been just as meaningful. “No matter what, whenever something happened to a student, we backed each other up鈥 we wanted to make sure our class was a family, and we had each other鈥檚 backs.鈥 Lilia appreciates her bond with her classmates, who offer support through challenges and share in each other鈥檚 triumphs.

White Coat Ceremony: A Symbol of Transition

Recently, Lilia celebrated the White Coat Ceremony, a symbolic milestone for DPT students. 鈥淭oday we鈥檙e doing our white coat ceremony, which signifies the end of our didactics… and now starting in September, we鈥檙e out in clinics treating patients.鈥 This transition marks a significant shift from classroom learning to real-world clinical practice.

Preparing for Clinical Rotations

Lilia and her cohort are about to begin their full clinical rotations, where they will apply the skills, they鈥檝e learned. Many will stay in California. However, some will choose to travel out of state. 鈥淚鈥檓 very excited for the hands-on鈥 I鈥檓 ready to work with the patients, building that connection, seeing the results.鈥

Resources and Lasting Faculty Connections

奥颁鲍鈥檚 DPT program has equipped students with extensive resources, from faculty guidance to administrative support. Lilia emphasized the faculty鈥檚 enduring commitment: 鈥淥ur professors have been there for us no matter what, and they even state to this day that they鈥檙e going to be with us even after. We can call them at any time.鈥

Advice for Future DPT Students

Lilia鈥檚 advice to prospective students is simple: 鈥淒o it. It definitely challenges you, but the most important thing that helps me, especially being far away from my family and friends, is to take time for yourself鈥 because without yourself, you鈥檙e not going to get through the program. Without a mindset that is positive, you can get lost. Doing stuff that reminded me of who I am and what I love aside from studying鈥 that鈥檚 really what helped me.鈥 She believes in prioritizing personal well-being as the foundation for academic success.

You don鈥檛 have to settle for sky-high tuition or long waitlists when pursuing your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you鈥檙e putting your nursing education on hold due to cost or acceptance setbacks, you should know that relocating to Texas can offer more options.

Rather than waiting for a spot to open, you can attend an accredited nursing school like 国产主播, where you can skip the waitlist entirely and graduate with your Bachelor of Science in Nursing in as few as 39 months. Plus, if you鈥檙e in a high-cost-of-living state like California, relocating to Texas may reduce overall costs 鈥 from tuition to everyday expenses.

Keep reading to discover why relocating to Texas for nursing school could be the right move for your future.

1. Tuition Costs in Texas Are Lower Than In Other States

Are you thinking of becoming a registered nurse (RN) in states like California or New York but feel concerned about high tuition rates? In Texas, you can often find lower tuition costs at many nursing schools. You can even take advantage of a variety of scholarships and grants that can further lower your out-of-pocket costs.

By spending less on your education, you can free up funds for relocation expenses, personal goals, or emergencies. You鈥檒l likely find it less stressful to manage school fees, allowing you to focus on succeeding in your nursing program. With the money you save, you can invest in resources that support your journey toward becoming a confident and competent RN.

2. You Can Skip the TX Nursing School Waitlist

It鈥檚 frustrating to wait for acceptance letters while your passion for nursing continues to grow. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN program near Dallas has no waitlist so you can get started on your education right away.

Instead of wondering where or when you might be admitted, you can focus on moving straight into your coursework and clinical rotations. Deciding on a no-waitlist school can also reduce uncertainty about your future, giving you time to plan living arrangements, work commitments, and finances with less stress.

3. Texas is the Second-Largest Employer of RNs

Did you know that Texas ranks among the top states for registered nurse employment, according to the ? This means you have plenty of options to build your career, whether you prefer the fast-paced environment of a major medical center or the close-knit feel of a community hospital.

Working in Texas also gives you the chance to explore different nursing specialties and refine your clinical skills. No matter where you see yourself, Texas has a place for you to practice.

4. There鈥檚 No State Income Tax for RNs in Texas

Relocating to Texas and practicing as an RN is easier than you might think. In fact, along with being the second-highest employer of RNs in the country, it also has no state income tax 鈥 meaning you get to keep more of your paycheck.

This can make a big difference, especially if you鈥檙e coming from a state with high-income taxes that cut into your earnings. Lower taxes, paired with a lower cost of living in many areas across Texas, can help you save money or put more toward your future.

Whether you’re looking to pay off loans, build savings, or simply enjoy a better quality of life, practicing in Texas makes it easier to maximize your hard-earned income.

5. You Can Earn Your BSN in Texas and Practice in Other States

Are you from a state that鈥檚 far from Texas? Whether you鈥檙e relocating temporarily or planning to return home, earning your BSN in Texas can meet the educational requirements for licensure in many other states. Thanks to the , you can use your Texas nursing license to work in other NLC member states without applying for additional licenses.

If you plan to practice in a non-NLC state, the process is still straightforward. You typically need to:

  • Verify your nursing license
  • Complete a background check
  • Apply for a license through state endorsement
  • Meet any additional state-specific requirements

By training in Texas, you gain valuable clinical experience with a diverse patient population, which prepares you to adapt to different healthcare settings. Plus, you can build connections and mentorships to support you throughout your nursing career, no matter where you choose to practice.

Bea M. always felt in her heart that her life purpose was to help people. However, initially, she stayed away from nursing, wanting to forge her own path. As a child, she observed her mother and aunts working as nurses after arriving in the U.S. from the Philippines. Bea went on to try acting, dancing, music, sports, and social work before realizing nursing was her true calling. In March 2024, she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from 国产主播鈥檚 Los Angeles campus.

Growing up in the suburbs of the Bay Area, Bea recalled the pressure to succeed. 鈥淎s children of immigrants, there was a lot of competition with one another,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was bullied a lot as a kid. I didn鈥檛 pick up things as fast as the others. I thought maybe I wasn鈥檛 smart enough to be a nurse.鈥

After working in social work, Bea determined it was not the career for her. She decided to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. 鈥淚 did some searching within myself,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith these new experiences and meeting people from all over the world, I gained a new perspective that I should give nursing a try.鈥

After returning, she began a vocational nursing program just as the world entered the pandemic. Afterward, Bea recognized that nursing had been her path all along. 鈥淭hat was the first time in my entire life that I finished something with academic honors, and I realized that maybe I was actually good at this,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 made it this far — I might as well continue.鈥

While working at an acute psych clinic, Bea applied to the LVN to BSN program at WCU. 鈥淚 moved out here with just luggage and couch surfed until I finally got an apartment and job that I could balance with my schoolwork.鈥

Throughout the program, Bea said she faced imposter syndrome. 鈥淏ecause of my past being bullied, I struggled a lot with my mental health,鈥 she shared. 鈥淏ut as soon as I started nursing, I felt like this was the way I could make a difference.鈥

Bea quickly bonded with her fellow classmates and faculty. She particularly appreciated her time with Professor Jennifer Uebe. 鈥淲e still keep in touch to this day. She inspired me to be more confident in my clinical decision-making and to stand up for myself,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淪he always treated her classes as a team sport. I was used to doing things on my own, but knowing there is a team behind you helps so much.鈥

Today, Bea works as a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at a Southern California hospital. She described being proud she has made it this far, noting that her mother worked in the same unit and specialty. During harder moments, Bea has been able to lean on her mom through their shared experience. 鈥淭he first time I ever lost a patient, I remember going to my car and crying, and my first thought was to call my mom,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淢y mom told me, 鈥楧id you do everything you could? Did you give it your all?鈥 I said yes, and she said, 鈥楾hen that is enough.鈥 It gave me a sense of peace. Especially in this career and unit, that is it. We do our best. We give it our all. At the end of the day, that is all we can do.鈥

Bea is proud of her status as a WCU alumni. 鈥淚鈥檝e met a lot of coworkers and whatnot who were also WCU nurses or alumni, and they鈥檝e always been the best people to work with in my experience,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淭o be one of them and to hopefully carry on that same care is to embody the pride and reputation I’ve been given.鈥
