Cynthia C., BSN 鈥24, never expected her life to look like it does today. After being diagnosed with stage III cancer, everything shifted in an instant. Yet, this challenging experience became the catalyst for a new, purposeful journey.

鈥淐ancer gave me a second chance at life,鈥 Cynthia reflected. 鈥淣ow, I understand my purpose. If I wasn鈥檛 sure before, I am now.鈥

During her chemotherapy treatment, Cynthia was supported by a nurse-patient navigator who played a vital role in her recovery. At the time, Cynthia was also pregnant with her sixth child, a situation that deepened her appreciation for the healthcare professionals around her.

鈥淎fter going through chemo and meeting other patients, I told my mom I wanted to work in oncology,鈥 she shared. 鈥淢y goal was to pay it forward.鈥

Cynthia started working in an administrative role in a hospital鈥檚 oncology unit, where an oncologist saw potential in her and encouraged her to pursue nursing.

鈥淗e kept telling me I would make a great nurse,鈥 she recalled. 鈥溾橸ou empathize with the patients,鈥 he said. 鈥榊ou genuinely care.鈥欌

Her determination to help cancer patients soon became her life鈥檚 mission. Despite having no prior healthcare experience, Cynthia found the work to be instinctive.

鈥淗aving gone through cancer myself, I can truly empathize with all of them,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 incredibly fulfilling.鈥

Cynthia enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at 国产主播鈥檚 Los Angeles campus, graduating with cum laude honors this past July. Balancing full-time work, her studies, and raising six children as a single mother was no small feat.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have a single day off,鈥 she said. 鈥淓very day was either work, school, or clinical, and I still had to go home and be a mom.鈥

Despite the challenges, Cynthia is grateful for her experience at WCU and the supportive community of students and faculty.

鈥淚鈥檓 so thankful for the experience and proud to be a part of West Coast,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he staff and students I met still stay in touch. It鈥檚 like a family.鈥

Armed with her BSN degree, Cynthia is more committed than ever to helping others navigate their cancer diagnoses. Having lost her aunt to cancer as a teenager, she understands the pain and uncertainty that comes with the disease.

Today, she has become a trusted resource in her community, offering support, advocacy, and encouragement to anyone who reaches out.

鈥淐ancer isn鈥檛 something you can cover with a bandage. Many people don鈥檛 know where to turn,鈥 Cynthia said.

Cynthia鈥檚 goal is to become a nurse practitioner and continue her work in oncology. The relationships she forms with her patients give her work profound meaning.

鈥淚 see myself in them,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all afraid of the unknown, but having someone to hold your hand and guide you makes it a little easier. It lets them know they鈥檙e not alone.鈥

Can You Go From OTA to OT?

Looking to make a career switch from a licensed occupational therapy assistant (OTA) to a licensed occupational therapist (OT)? If you鈥檙e already a practicing OTA, you should know that many Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs allow you to transition into an OT role in less than two years 鈥 without needing a bachelor鈥檚 degree.

Read on to learn more about what this transition from OTA to OT entails, how your responsibilities will shift, and if this career advancement is the right fit for you.

What is an Occupational Therapy Assistant?

An is a licensed healthcare professional who works under the supervision of an occupational therapist to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. OTAs play a hands-on role in patient care, working directly with a healthcare team to implement treatment plans that promote recovery and enhance each patient鈥檚 quality of life.

To practice, occupational therapy assistants must earn a minimum of an associate degree along with national and state licensure.

Key Responsibilities of an OTA:

Occupational therapy assistants conduct more than just daily, routine tasks like checking in on their patients, reporting on a patient鈥檚 progress to an OT, and educating families or caregivers. OTAs typically work in hospitals, educational institutions, and home care settings. Some of their include:

  • Enhancing Mobility: OTAs help patients improve their range of motion, balance, and ability to walk. This can include stretching, strength training, or walking on a treadmill to not only increase their strength and coordination but also help them gain the confidence they deserve.
  • Assisting with Daily Living: OTAs support their patients in performing essential daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and grooming. They help them develop personalized strategies and adaptive equipment like grab bars or dressing aids to help them manage their daily lives.
  • Managing Pain: Along with teaching patients how to improve mobility, OTAs may focus on teaching their patients how to use their bodies properly to help them avoid pain or overexertion. While OTAs are not qualified to prescribe medication, they can help manage pain by using assistive devices such as splints, braces, or gait trainers.
  • Supporting Mental Health: An OTA can help patients achieve the mental health goals created by an OT, as well as monitor and report their progress. To support their patients鈥 mental health, they may help them develop coping strategies like deep-breathing exercises or create structured routines. OTAs can also lend an empathic ear to help build a patient relationship built on trust and respect.
  • Improving Cognitive Function: Occupational therapy assistants can help their patients improve cognitive function by teaching them rehearsal techniques such as memory encoding, retention, and retrieval. They may also employ external memory aids such as calendars or reminder apps to help them remember important events or appointments.

What is an Occupational Therapist?

An is a licensed healthcare professional who assesses, plans, and oversees comprehensive treatment plans to help patients overcome day-to-day challenges across all areas of life.

Unlike OTAs, OTs have a higher degree of authority to independently evaluate patients, develop personalized treatment plans, and make critical decisions regarding patient care. While occupational therapists have the expertise to perform these tasks alone, they typically collaborate with OTAs to deliver coordinated services that ensure effective patient outcomes.

To practice in most states, OTs need a minimum of a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) along with national and state certification.

Key Responsibilities of an OT:

Occupational therapists can handle the same routines and specialized tasks that occupational therapy assistants can; however, they primarily differ in their tasks because they have the ability to oversee the entire therapeutic process. This means that they lead and coordinate multidisciplinary healthcare teams by following evidence-based practices.

Below are a few key occupational therapist responsibilities:

  • Supervise and Mentor OTAs: Providing guidance and oversight to OTAs, OTs ensure that therapeutic interventions are executed correctly and effectively. They also mentor OTAs by offering training, feedback, and support.
  • Create Treatment Plans: OTs design comprehensive, individualized treatment plans based on thorough assessments of each patient鈥檚 physical, cognitive, and emotional needs. Each unique plan outlines specific goals along with the therapeutic activities required to achieve them.
  • Sign Off on Progress Assessments: Progress reports and assessments completed by OTAs are thoroughly evaluated for accuracy and approved by OTs. Analyzing patient data helps determine the effectiveness of treatment plans, highlights necessary adjustments, and, most importantly, determines if patients are achieving their rehabilitation goals. This oversight is critical for facilities to maintain best practices.
  • Consult with Healthcare Professionals: OTs collaborate with a wide range of healthcare professionals, including physicians, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and social workers, to coordinate comprehensive care for their patients. The difference in cross-team collaboration between OTAs and OTs is that while OTAs can collaborate with other healthcare members, they must do so under the direction of OTs.

Should You Switch to an OT as an OTA?

Deciding if you should go from an OTA to an OT comes down to a variety of factors. For one, if you want more autonomy in the workplace, then a career jump to a licensed OT will allow you to make more independent decisions in your practice. You鈥檒l also have access to more diverse job roles across a wider range of settings 鈥 including the option of opening your own private practice.

An OTA to OT pathway bridges the gap between your current role as an OTA and becoming a licensed OT. If you鈥檝e already been working as an OTA, this means you鈥檒l be able to use your professional experience to quickly earn your OT qualifications and start practicing.

Why consider an OTA to OT pathway program?

  • Some occupational therapy schools let you earn your MSOT in as little as two years.
  • OTA to OT programs teach you the hands-on skills and knowledge needed to pass the .
  • Many programs offer flexible options, such as online classes, so you can continue working while you study without interrupting your weekday flow.
  • It offers a direct path to a master鈥檚 degree in occupational therapy, which is a requirement for becoming an OT.

What Are the Qualifications to Become an OT as an OTA?

To be eligible for many OTA to OT bridge programs, you鈥檒l need to meet a certain set of criteria. For instance, WCU鈥檚 Master of Science in Occupational Therapy has the following application requirements:

  • Licensure: You must hold a valid Occupational Therapy Assistant license.
  • Experience: Have at least one year of professional experience practicing as an OTA.
  • Education: You must have completed some prerequisite courses with at least a 3.0 GPA, typically within the last 10 years. These are usually part of your associate鈥檚 degree from an accredited institution.

Learn more about the .

Turn Your OTA Experience Into a Master鈥檚 in OT

Are you ready to leverage your experience as an occupational therapy assistant? WCU鈥檚 MSOT program allows you to complete your master鈥檚 degree in less than two years without a bachelor鈥檚 degree. Classes are offered through a hands-on learning format equipped with simulation labs to give you the real-world experience you need to pass your NBCOT exam.

Carlos C., a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) graduate at 国产主播, prepares to take his next steps in healthcare. From working as a mental health technician to pursuing his passion for occupational therapy, Carlos has spent years honing his skills and deepening his commitment to serving others. Now in his final trimester of didactic coursework, he鈥檚 ready to translate his classroom experience into meaningful, real-world impact.聽

鈥淥ccupational therapy has always been a lifelong mission for me,鈥 he said. Originally from Pomona, California, Carlos is currently in his fourth and final trimester of didactic coursework. His next step? Fieldwork rotations, where he plans to bring his classroom and life experiences to life.

Carlos鈥 path to 国产主播 wasn鈥檛 a straight line. Before enrolling, he worked as a mental health technician at a psychiatric hospital in Glendora, where he supported patients with psychiatric disorders in their daily activities. This experience highlighted gaps in care that he believes occupational therapy can bridge. 鈥淪eeing those gaps made me want to apply to graduate school,鈥 he said.

His motivation to serve others stems from his upbringing. 鈥淢y mom was a caregiver, and growing up around my grandparents really shaped my desire to help,鈥 Carlos explained. His passion for occupational therapy was solidified when he recognized OT’s potential to support physical and mental health needs.聽

Carlos emphasized his commitment to inpatient care. 鈥淚 want to work in inpatient facilities where I can see people at their worst and help them get better,鈥 he said. In the long term, he aims to start a home health company to continue providing holistic care.聽

Carlos chose 国产主播 over other institutions because of its focus on diversity and inclusivity. 鈥淭he small class sizes and the personal relationships with professors make all the difference,鈥 he noted. 鈥淭hey bring their real-world experience into the classroom, and that鈥檚 invaluable.鈥

For future students, Carlos offers this advice: 鈥淩emain open-minded. You鈥檙e a lifelong learner. Every bit of feedback helps you grow.鈥 He also shared a mantra that has guided him through his journey: 鈥淲hat you reveal, you heal.鈥

With over 65,000 alumni worldwide, 国产主播 is thrilled to celebrate the vibrant network of graduates who are leaving a lasting impact across industries and communities. But what truly sets our alumni community apart is how many of them return to WCU to give back 鈥 many as guest lecturers, mentors, and even faculty members.

More than 100 alumni return to the classroom each year to inspire the next generation, bringing invaluable real-world experience and igniting students’ passion for their chosen fields.

鈥淚 knew there wasn’t anywhere I would rather work than at WCU,鈥 said Amanda Woolery, a nursing instructor who earned her Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from WCU in 2018 and 2021, respectively. 鈥淚 had such a wonderful experience here as a student, it was only natural that I would want to come back to my 鈥榟ome鈥 to teach the next generation and bring it full circle.鈥

Alumni faculty embody WCU鈥檚 commitment to creating lifelong connections, where students become professionals and then mentors, each generation inspiring the next.

Valerie Cromwell-Perry, who earned her Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) from WCU in 2020, was encouraged by her professor to return to the university as a lab assistant, which ultimately led to her becoming an assistant professor in the OT department.

鈥淎s a mentor, I see my role as one of guiding and nurturing students’ growth and understanding,鈥 Valerie said. 鈥淚 consult with my students on the first day of class to better understand their preferred learning styles 鈥 fostering a richer learning experience.鈥

Graduates from 国产主播鈥檚 Texas campus and Online Programs gathered in front of friends and families this December at the Plano Event Center to celebrate the 2024 Commencement.

Master of Physician Assistant graduate Anthony I. said he always wanted to be in medicine, either as a doctor or a PA but wanted flexibility. As a PA, he said, you can switch specialties whenever you desire 鈥 and that鈥檚 what really sold him on the profession.

鈥淚 never felt like a number at 国产主播,” Anthony said. “I felt like they saw me as a person, and today, I’m most thankful to be completing my master’s program.鈥澛

Already a licensed vocational nurse for over a decade, WCU-Texas BSN graduate Courtney W. was driven to earn the registered nurse title to unlock better career prospects.聽

“I was making good money in California, but I didn鈥檛 have that RN title. I didn’t go straight to college right after high school, so it’s never too late,” she said.

A former Baylor University undergraduate with a degree in health science studies, Emma T. said she was drawn to the PA profession for its team-oriented approach and versatility.

鈥淚 never thought I’d be standing here. I think it’s just something I’ve dreamed about and worked so hard for,” Emma said. “I know that this program prepared me well I was surrounded by such great friends and classmates and faculty that they never let me doubt myself.鈥

Originally from California, Esther N. initially planned to attend the university’s campus in Anaheim until learning about the advantages of moving to the Lone Star State.聽

“I originally heard about 国产主播 from California because that’s where I was living previously,” she said. “But then I found out that Texas is actually a cheaper option, and I decided to move to Texas.”

The transition from California to Texas was made smoother by 国产主播鈥檚 support, Esther explained. Despite never having visited the Texas campus before her move, she described her first impression as overwhelmingly positive.

“When I first stepped foot on the campus, I thought it was beautiful; it took my breath away,” she said.

Esther鈥檚 decision to pursue nursing stemmed from personal experiences.

“I picked nursing because when I was young, I often spent most of my time in the hospital, and the nurses made it such a wonderful place to be that I didn’t even want to leave,” Esther said.

She was determined to share that same compassion and care with her future patients.

Adjusting to life in Texas was a surprisingly smooth experience for Esther.

“I adjusted really well, actually. I’m very grateful that I moved because I got to have family here, and I’m not going back anytime soon,” she said.

She recommended Dallas as a vibrant place to live, adding, “The food is great, the culture is great, the people are good. It鈥檚 a wonderful place to live 鈥 not in the summer, though!”

Esther reflected on the strong relationships she built at 国产主播.

“My relationship with my classmates was amazing; I found my forever family in nursing school,” she said. 鈥淩elationships with the professors and faculty were also really good because, at West Coast, they value student input, so communication was always flowing.”

As for her preparation for the nursing field, she credited the university’s rigorous support.

“West Coast prepared me amazingly for the NCLEX and for nursing as a whole,” she said.

At her pinning ceremony, Esther celebrated her achievements and offered advice to future students: “You can’t do nursing school alone, so find that family or friend that you can rely on because it is going to get tough. Use your resources early and remember why you started nursing school.”

At 国产主播, the path to a successful nursing career can be challenging, but one key program that makes a difference is Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) tutoring. This peer-to-peer tutoring service provides a powerful support system for nursing students, helping them deepen their understanding of complex subjects while reinforcing essential skills. This article will explore how PAL tutoring works, its benefits, and why it鈥檚 a game-changer for tutors and students.聽

What is PAL tutoring at 国产主播?

PAL tutoring at WCU is a peer-led academic support program where students who excelled in earlier courses help their classmates succeed in those same subjects. These PAL tutors are carefully selected based on their strong academic performance and their ability to communicate difficult concepts in a way that resonates with fellow students.

For nursing student Camila G., a PAL tutor at WCU-Miami, the role goes beyond teaching concepts. 鈥淎s a PAL tutor, I help guide students through challenging material by breaking it down into understandable pieces. It creates a comfortable environment for students to ask questions they might not feel confident asking in class,鈥 she said.

Benefits of PAL Tutoring for Nursing Students

1. Strengthens Nursing Foundations

Nursing school builds on fundamental concepts that students must carry with them throughout their careers. PAL Tutoring reinforces those basics, helping students grasp course material more effectively. Tutors guide students through challenging coursework and help themselves retain critical information by teaching it.

鈥淣ursing is all about having a solid foundation,” Camila explained. “Just because you finish a class doesn鈥檛 mean the material won鈥檛 come back. That鈥檚 why tutoring is so important 鈥 it helps solidify the knowledge you鈥檒l need for the NCLEX and beyond.鈥

2. Boosts Confidence and Builds a Sense of Community

One of the main reasons students turn to PAL tutoring is the comfortable, judgment-free environment. Peer tutors help remove the intimidation of the classroom, allowing students to freely ask questions and explore difficult concepts.

鈥淚t鈥檚 rewarding when a student finally understands something that鈥檚 been a challenge,鈥 said Jemima O., a PAL tutor at WCU-Texas. 鈥淚 love knowing that I鈥檝e helped them feel more confident, just like previous tutors helped me.鈥

This environment also fosters relationships beyond the classroom, with students forming study groups and building lasting friendships that support their academic journey.

3. Provides Personalized Learning Support

Every student learns differently, and PAL Tutoring recognizes this by offering flexible, personalized tutoring sessions. Whether you prefer visual aids, hands-on activities, or auditory explanations, PAL tutors tailor their approach to fit your learning style.

鈥淢y tutoring style includes both visual and auditory techniques,鈥 Camila shared. 鈥淪ome students learn best by listening, while others need to see things written down. I make sure to accommodate both by writing things out and explaining them verbally during each session.鈥

4. Professional Development for Tutors

Becoming a PAL tutor doesn鈥檛 just benefit the students receiving help 鈥 it鈥檚 also a valuable opportunity for tutors to develop leadership, communication, and teaching skills. These experiences look great on resumes and can lead to letters of recommendation from faculty members.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think about it at first, but being a PAL tutor has really helped me grow as a future nurse,鈥 Jemima said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a great way to give back to the WCU community that supported me.鈥

Why PAL Tutoring is Key to Nursing School Success

Succeeding in nursing school requires more than just memorization. You need to understand the material, apply it in real-life clinical settings, and develop the confidence to navigate the complexities of patient care. PAL tutoring at WCU provides nursing students with the tools they need to achieve these goals.

For students who may feel overwhelmed, PAL tutoring is a lifeline. By offering one-on-one tutoring sessions, group sessions, and peer support, the program ensures that no student has to navigate the difficult path of nursing school alone.聽

鈥淭he best part about PAL Tutoring is the relationships you build,鈥 Camila said. 鈥淚 always make sure my students know they can reach out to me whenever they need help, even after our tutoring sessions.鈥

5 Reasons to Go From an LPN to ADN

Are you a licensed practical nurse (LPN) looking to advance your career? For many LPNs, an associate degree in nursing (ADN) is a logical next step鈥攁nd it can also be a streamlined one. An LPN to ADN pathway allows you to apply your previous education toward an ADN and prepare for your registered nurse (RN) license.

These programs offer LPNs an efficient way to transition into RN roles by offering hands-on clinical training alongside a solid foundation in nursing concepts. If you鈥檙e curious about an LPN to ADN pathway, you鈥檒l want to explore these five reasons why this transition can help further your nursing career.

1. You Can Use Your LPN to Earn Your ADN Sooner

As an LPN, your prior education and experience can significantly reduce the time it takes to complete an ADN program. Many schools, like WCU-Miami, allow you to transfer up to 12 eligible LPN credits, which help you finish your degree faster and ease the stress of balancing work and attending school.

With WCU-Miami鈥檚 ADN program, you can leverage your prior nursing experience and earn your degree in as little as 17 months. The LPN to ADN pathway is just one aspect of the ADN program that makes it an excellent fit for nurses looking for a streamlined way to build on their knowledge and skill set.

2. An ADN is a Streamlined Path to RN Licensure

For aspiring registered nurses, an ADN is an efficient way to meet the educational requirements for the NCLEX-RN exam 鈥 the final step toward earning RN licensure. An ADN program helps equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to take the exam with confidence. For LPNs seeking to advance in the profession, an ADN provides a clear, structured path towards RN licensure.

3. You May Gain More Flexibility With an ADN

If you鈥檙e seeking an ADN to earn RN status, you can gain greater autonomy in patient care and a wider scope of practice. As an LPN, you鈥檙e often responsible for administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and maintaining patient records. Whereas ADN-trained RNs have expanded responsibilities and often supervise RNs.

Whether you want to work in intensive care, surgical units, or emergency departments, an ADN has the potential to open doors to more diverse opportunities, allowing you to shape your career path in ways that better align with your interests and skills.

4. An ADN Helps Prepare You for Specializations

An ADN also sets the foundation for nurses interested in pursuing specialized roles in healthcare. With an ADN, you’ll be better positioned to explore advanced areas of nursing, such as pediatrics, gerontology, or critical care. These specialties typically require more training, but the ADN provides the foundational knowledge you need to continue your education.

For LPNs who are passionate about a specific area of healthcare, this pathway offers a way to deepen their knowledge and pursue a more focused career. Even if specialization isn鈥檛 your immediate goal, having an ADN can prepare you for additional opportunities down the line, giving you the flexibility to pursue these roles when you鈥檙e ready.

5. Your ADN Provides a Direct Path to Higher Degrees

Completing your ADN isn鈥檛 just a professional move that can strengthen your career, it鈥檚 also a valuable investment in your future as a nurse. Earning your ADN gives you a head start on the path to higher degrees such as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

By transferring your credits and experience from your ADN, you can earn higher degrees, pursue leadership positions, enter more advanced or specialized roles, and provide the exceptional care that your patients deserve.

Advance Your Career by Earning Your ADN at WCU-Miami

Are you ready to take the next step in your nursing career? The LPN to ADN pathway at WCU-Miami allows you to apply up to 12 eligible LPN credits, which can streamline your time to degree completion to as little as 17 months.
