国产主播鈥檚 Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is all about empowering students to make a real impact on people鈥檚 lives. For Lilia F., that meant relocating from Northern California to Southern California to join 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies. Drawn by the supportive faculty and welcoming community, she鈥檚 found her place here, sharing how WCU has fueled her passion for physical therapy and helped her grow in ways she hadn鈥檛 expected.聽

Personal Inspiration

Lilia鈥檚 passion for physical therapy began with a deeply personal experience. Her love for sports and activities made physical therapy an ideal career path.

鈥淲hat got me into PT was actually seeing my brother go through it when I was younger, and he wasn鈥檛 fully able-bodied,鈥 she explained, reflecting on her younger years. 鈥淪eeing how the physical therapist kind of engaged him into getting back into activity and helping him get his motivation back… really brought to light at a young age that helping people is what I wanted to do.鈥

Choosing 国产主播

Lilia鈥檚 search for the right DPT program led her to WCU, where she felt a unique connection with the faculty and the student community.

鈥淚 knew I wanted to stay in California,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I met the professors and interacted with them鈥 they were the ones that really showed the most care to their students.鈥 The compassion and dedication of the faculty have proven invaluable. 鈥淚 can say most of those professors were the reasons why we continued and didn鈥檛 give up.鈥

Support from Faculty

Throughout her journey, Lilia has felt deeply supported by her professors, who have cultivated an encouraging and understanding environment. She noted one professor’s approach, saying, 鈥淗e felt the energy that we were feeling in the room. He felt the nerves; he felt the anxiety. And he took the time to speak with us and tell us, you know, 鈥楧o your best, and that鈥檚 all that should matter.鈥欌 These reassurances have helped her, and her cohort gain the confidence to succeed.

A Cohort That Feels Like Family

The support within Lilia鈥檚 cohort has been just as meaningful. “No matter what, whenever something happened to a student, we backed each other up鈥 we wanted to make sure our class was a family, and we had each other鈥檚 backs.鈥 Lilia appreciates her bond with her classmates, who offer support through challenges and share in each other鈥檚 triumphs.

White Coat Ceremony: A Symbol of Transition

Recently, Lilia celebrated the White Coat Ceremony, a symbolic milestone for DPT students. 鈥淭oday we鈥檙e doing our white coat ceremony, which signifies the end of our didactics… and now starting in September, we鈥檙e out in clinics treating patients.鈥 This transition marks a significant shift from classroom learning to real-world clinical practice.

Preparing for Clinical Rotations

Lilia and her cohort are about to begin their full clinical rotations, where they will apply the skills, they鈥檝e learned. Many will stay in California. However, some will choose to travel out of state. 鈥淚鈥檓 very excited for the hands-on鈥 I鈥檓 ready to work with the patients, building that connection, seeing the results.鈥

Resources and Lasting Faculty Connections

奥颁鲍鈥檚 DPT program has equipped students with extensive resources, from faculty guidance to administrative support. Lilia emphasized the faculty鈥檚 enduring commitment: 鈥淥ur professors have been there for us no matter what, and they even state to this day that they鈥檙e going to be with us even after. We can call them at any time.鈥

Advice for Future DPT Students

Lilia鈥檚 advice to prospective students is simple: 鈥淒o it. It definitely challenges you, but the most important thing that helps me, especially being far away from my family and friends, is to take time for yourself鈥 because without yourself, you鈥檙e not going to get through the program. Without a mindset that is positive, you can get lost. Doing stuff that reminded me of who I am and what I love aside from studying鈥 that鈥檚 really what helped me.鈥 She believes in prioritizing personal well-being as the foundation for academic success.

Be a Part of the WCU Physical Therapy Community

国产主播鈥檚 Doctor of Physical Therapy program is more than an academic path; it鈥檚 a supportive, inspiring community that fosters the next generation of physical therapists. With dedicated professors, close-knit cohorts, and hands-on clinical experience, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 DPT program prepares students like Lilia to thrive in a meaningful, patient-focused career.聽

You don鈥檛 have to settle for sky-high tuition or long waitlists when pursuing your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you鈥檙e putting your nursing education on hold due to cost or acceptance setbacks, you should know that relocating to Texas can offer more options.

Rather than waiting for a spot to open, you can attend an accredited nursing school like 国产主播, where you can skip the waitlist entirely and graduate with your Bachelor of Science in Nursing in as few as 39 months. Plus, if you鈥檙e in a high-cost-of-living state like California, relocating to Texas may reduce overall costs 鈥 from tuition to everyday expenses.

Keep reading to discover why relocating to Texas for nursing school could be the right move for your future.

1. Tuition Costs in Texas Are Lower Than In Other States

Are you thinking of becoming a registered nurse (RN) in states like California or New York but feel concerned about high tuition rates? In Texas, you can often find lower tuition costs at many nursing schools. You can even take advantage of a variety of scholarships and grants that can further lower your out-of-pocket costs.

By spending less on your education, you can free up funds for relocation expenses, personal goals, or emergencies. You鈥檒l likely find it less stressful to manage school fees, allowing you to focus on succeeding in your nursing program. With the money you save, you can invest in resources that support your journey toward becoming a confident and competent RN.

2. You Can Skip the TX Nursing School Waitlist

It鈥檚 frustrating to wait for acceptance letters while your passion for nursing continues to grow. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN program near Dallas has no waitlist so you can get started on your education right away.

Instead of wondering where or when you might be admitted, you can focus on moving straight into your coursework and clinical rotations. Deciding on a no-waitlist school can also reduce uncertainty about your future, giving you time to plan living arrangements, work commitments, and finances with less stress.

3. Texas is the Second-Largest Employer of RNs

Did you know that Texas ranks among the top states for registered nurse employment, according to the ? This means you have plenty of options to build your career, whether you prefer the fast-paced environment of a major medical center or the close-knit feel of a community hospital.

Working in Texas also gives you the chance to explore different nursing specialties and refine your clinical skills. No matter where you see yourself, Texas has a place for you to practice.

4. There鈥檚 No State Income Tax for RNs in Texas

Relocating to Texas and practicing as an RN is easier than you might think. In fact, along with being the second-highest employer of RNs in the country, it also has no state income tax 鈥 meaning you get to keep more of your paycheck.

This can make a big difference, especially if you鈥檙e coming from a state with high-income taxes that cut into your earnings. Lower taxes, paired with a lower cost of living in many areas across Texas, can help you save money or put more toward your future.

Whether you’re looking to pay off loans, build savings, or simply enjoy a better quality of life, practicing in Texas makes it easier to maximize your hard-earned income.

5. You Can Earn Your BSN in Texas and Practice in Other States

Are you from a state that鈥檚 far from Texas? Whether you鈥檙e relocating temporarily or planning to return home, earning your BSN in Texas can meet the educational requirements for licensure in many other states. Thanks to the , you can use your Texas nursing license to work in other NLC member states without applying for additional licenses.

If you plan to practice in a non-NLC state, the process is still straightforward. You typically need to:

  • Verify your nursing license
  • Complete a background check
  • Apply for a license through state endorsement
  • Meet any additional state-specific requirements

By training in Texas, you gain valuable clinical experience with a diverse patient population, which prepares you to adapt to different healthcare settings. Plus, you can build connections and mentorships to support you throughout your nursing career, no matter where you choose to practice.

Bea M. always felt in her heart that her life purpose was to help people. However, initially, she stayed away from nursing, wanting to forge her own path. As a child, she observed her mother and aunts working as nurses after arriving in the U.S. from the Philippines. Bea went on to try acting, dancing, music, sports, and social work before realizing nursing was her true calling. In March 2024, she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from 国产主播鈥檚 Los Angeles campus.

Growing up in the suburbs of the Bay Area, Bea recalled the pressure to succeed. 鈥淎s children of immigrants, there was a lot of competition with one another,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was bullied a lot as a kid. I didn鈥檛 pick up things as fast as the others. I thought maybe I wasn鈥檛 smart enough to be a nurse.鈥

After working in social work, Bea determined it was not the career for her. She decided to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. 鈥淚 did some searching within myself,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith these new experiences and meeting people from all over the world, I gained a new perspective that I should give nursing a try.鈥

After returning, she began a vocational nursing program just as the world entered the pandemic. Afterward, Bea recognized that nursing had been her path all along. 鈥淭hat was the first time in my entire life that I finished something with academic honors, and I realized that maybe I was actually good at this,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 made it this far — I might as well continue.鈥

While working at an acute psych clinic, Bea applied to the LVN to BSN program at WCU. 鈥淚 moved out here with just luggage and couch surfed until I finally got an apartment and job that I could balance with my schoolwork.鈥

Throughout the program, Bea said she faced imposter syndrome. 鈥淏ecause of my past being bullied, I struggled a lot with my mental health,鈥 she shared. 鈥淏ut as soon as I started nursing, I felt like this was the way I could make a difference.鈥

Bea quickly bonded with her fellow classmates and faculty. She particularly appreciated her time with Professor Jennifer Uebe. 鈥淲e still keep in touch to this day. She inspired me to be more confident in my clinical decision-making and to stand up for myself,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淪he always treated her classes as a team sport. I was used to doing things on my own, but knowing there is a team behind you helps so much.鈥

Today, Bea works as a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at a Southern California hospital. She described being proud she has made it this far, noting that her mother worked in the same unit and specialty. During harder moments, Bea has been able to lean on her mom through their shared experience. 鈥淭he first time I ever lost a patient, I remember going to my car and crying, and my first thought was to call my mom,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淢y mom told me, 鈥楧id you do everything you could? Did you give it your all?鈥 I said yes, and she said, 鈥楾hen that is enough.鈥 It gave me a sense of peace. Especially in this career and unit, that is it. We do our best. We give it our all. At the end of the day, that is all we can do.鈥

Bea is proud of her status as a WCU alumni. 鈥淚鈥檝e met a lot of coworkers and whatnot who were also WCU nurses or alumni, and they鈥檝e always been the best people to work with in my experience,鈥 Bea said. 鈥淭o be one of them and to hopefully carry on that same care is to embody the pride and reputation I’ve been given.鈥

For Megha C., the path to becoming a speech-language pathologist began when she was just 10 years old. Growing up in a close-knit joint family, Megha witnessed her youngest cousin鈥檚 transformation through speech therapy.

鈥淗e was almost 4 and not speaking. Now, at 13, he鈥檚 completely verbal,鈥 she recalled with pride. 鈥淪eeing that change inspired me to dedicate my life to this field.鈥

Speech-language pathology is a dynamic field that extends far beyond helping people speak.

鈥淲e work with everyone 鈥 from infants in the NICU to senior citizens.鈥 The field encompasses various specialties, including voice disorders, stuttering, feeding and swallowing, and cognitive-communication issues in stroke patients. It even delves into literacy disorders and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices for those who are nonverbal. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a vast and rewarding field,鈥 Megha said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e always learning, and there鈥檚 never a dull moment.鈥

Megha鈥檚 passion for helping others took root early. In middle school, she co-founded Lywood Awareness Buddies (LAB), an organization that bridged the gap between general and special education students. From presenting at Board of Education meetings to organizing community symposiums, Megha demonstrated her commitment to fostering inclusion and understanding. Today, LAB鈥檚 legacy continues, influencing younger generations to embrace diversity and empathy.

Fast forward to her time at 国产主播, Megha chose to relocate from New Jersey to Dallas to make the most of her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) program.

鈥淓ven though the program is online, I wanted the experience of a new city and the opportunity to connect with my peers and professors in person,鈥 she explained. The 国产主播 Texas campus and supportive environment have made her feel at home, offering study spaces and a welcoming community.

As an online student, Megha remains deeply engaged. She serves as the president of 奥颁鲍鈥檚 chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and was recently elected to its national Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (IDEA) work group. Her leadership roles allow her to advocate for a more inclusive environment, a cause close to her heart as a South Asian daughter of immigrants.

The program鈥檚 flipped classroom model and on-site immersives have broadened Megha鈥檚 horizons.

鈥淚 came in set on working with children with autism, but now I鈥檓 exploring stuttering and neuro disorders,鈥 she shared. These experiences, coupled with the support of faculty and Program Dean, have bolstered her confidence. 鈥淥ur professors genuinely care about us as individuals, not just as students.鈥

For now, Megha remains focused on her clinical placements, eagerly anticipating the day she can help others find their voice, just as her cousin once did.

No-Waitlist Schools

If you鈥檙e looking to advance your nursing education, you may have encountered a waitlist 鈥 or know someone else who has 鈥 at some point. Waiting for acceptance can be frustrating, especially when it delays your career goals and you鈥檙e ready to start now.

Rather than putting your future on hold, consider a school that values your passion and commitment to succeed. 国产主播 (WCU) proudly offers an accredited, no-waitlist Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at its Miami and Dallas-area campuses, allowing you to begin quickly without sacrificing quality.

Starting sooner means you can begin making a difference sooner. Read on to learn more about nursing school waitlists and why choosing a program without a waiting list can be a smart move.

What is the Average Waitlist Time for a Nursing Program?

Since every school is different, the average wait time for entering a nursing program can vary significantly. While certain nursing programs may allow entry within only a few semesters, others might require applicants to wait several years.

This is because nursing waitlists vary widely depending on factors such as:

  • Your GPA
  • The nursing courses you鈥檝e completed
  • How long you鈥檝e been waiting to enter the nursing program

Although waiting to make it off the list is an option, it may mean postponing your nursing career for months or even years. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 no-waitlist admissions process allows qualified applicants to begin their education sooner and gain the hands-on experience needed to succeed in the nursing field.

What Are the Benefits of No-Waitlist Schools?

Beyond prompt enrollment, there are other benefits to attending no-waitlist schools. If you鈥檙e a prospective nurse, consider the time and uncertainty that can arise while waiting to hear back on your acceptance. Below are a few advantages of attending a no-waitlist school.

1. You Can Start Your Nursing Career Faster

It makes sense that no-waitlist nursing programs can save you precious time toward starting your nursing career. Some BSN programs offer accelerated paces, allowing you to complete your education more efficiently. In fact, the BSN programs at 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Texas and Miami campuses can be completed in as little as 39 months at the Accelerated pace.

Starting your nursing career faster can also empower you to fill the gap. In high-population states like Texas and Florida, completing your education sooner positions you to make a difference in the expansive healthcare industry.

2. You鈥檒l Reduce Stress From Uncertainty

Waiting to hear back from a nursing program can feel overwhelming, especially when your future plans are on hold. The uncertainty of not knowing when 鈥 or even if 鈥 you鈥檒l be accepted into a program can add unnecessary stress to the experience.

With accredited no-waitlist nursing programs, you can minimize that uncertainty and put your energy into preparing for your nursing career without delays.

3. You Can Save Money on Your Education

If you鈥檙e located in a high cost-of-living state with long nursing school waitlists (like California), you might want to consider relocating for nursing school. Moving to states like Florida or Texas to pursue your BSN degree can both eliminate waitlists and make your education more affordable. You鈥檒l receive a quality education for less.

4. You鈥檙e Able to Enroll Anytime Without Pressure

Knowing you can enroll right away can give you a clear timeline for your education, allowing you to focus on your studies and career goals instead of worrying about waitlists or reapplying year after year.

Whether you鈥檙e just getting started in the field of nursing or transitioning from another healthcare field, you can rest easy knowing that you can start your education on your own terms.

Skip Nursing School Waitlists and Graduate Sooner at WCU

If you鈥檙e ready to embark on a career helping others, you don鈥檛 have to wait. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 accredited BSN program at its Miami and Dallas-area campuses offers the hands-on training needed to succeed. Students learn from experienced faculty and receive support in securing clinical training in the local area 鈥 all without having to face the uncertainty of lengthy waitlists.

Plus, if you鈥檙e wondering how to pay for your tuition, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 financial aid advisors are here to help you determine your options.

When you earn your BSN at the Dallas-Fort Worth location, you may qualify for a of up to $9,500 per academic year. Prospective BSN students attending the Miami, Florida location may also qualify for the same grant of up to $6,500 per academic year.

After graduating from the rigorous two-year Master of Physician Assistant program at 国产主播-Texas, Anthony I. walked across the stage on commencement day with a well-earned sense of accomplishment.

Now, he is setting his sights on the next step: Passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).

鈥淩ight now, my main focus is on passing the PANCE,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut I鈥檝e been looking at the job market, too. I鈥檓 just excited to put all the skills and knowledge I鈥檝e gained into action.鈥

Anthony, who earned his undergraduate degree in 2020 from Texas Tech, described his excitement about 奥颁鲍鈥檚 program and his reasons for pursuing the PA route.

鈥淚 always knew I wanted to be in medicine, either as a doctor or a PA,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut my personality is that I get bored easily, so I wanted flexibility. As a PA, you can switch specialties whenever you desire 鈥 that really sold me on the profession.鈥

鈥淵ou go to work, come home, sleep, and repeat the cycle,鈥 he explained. 鈥淎t the same time, you鈥檙e constantly studying for exams every few weeks. It鈥檚 about pushing through burnout and remembering the end goal.鈥

Anthony expressed gratitude for WCU-Texas, noting how the program exceeded his expectations.

鈥淎t first, I was hesitant because it鈥檚 a newer program, but I never felt like just a number here. The faculty and staff were proactive and supportive, always meeting us halfway to find solutions,鈥 he said.

Looking ahead to 2025, Anthony is eager to begin his career in healthcare and make a difference in patients鈥 lives.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 why we go through all of this,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 ready to put it all to use.鈥

How Are Occupational Therapy and Nursing Similar?

Considering a career in occupational therapy or nursing? Though it may not be immediately obvious, these fields overlap more than you might think. Both occupational therapists (OTs) and nurses work closely with patients across diverse healthcare settings, and their roles are more similar than they are different.

While the educational and certification paths to enter each career can vary, occupational therapists must graduate with a degree (such as a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy) from an accredited institution to be eligible for the much in the same way that prospective nurses must graduate with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.

Since both professions play crucial roles in clinical settings, understanding their unique responsibilities and qualifications will help you make an informed decision as to which path could be the right fit for you. Keep reading to explore the overlaps in occupational therapy and nursing including responsibilities, educational requirements, and more.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy involves helping individuals of all ages with moving through day-to-day life. Most OT patients face challenges that affect their ability to care for themselves, work, or socialize with others. Therapies can range from play-based activities for children to adapting to assistive technologies and equipment like mobility aides.

There are a few different roles within occupational therapy, including occupational therapy aides, occupational therapy assistants, and occupational therapists.

According to the , both occupational therapy assistants and occupational therapy aides assist occupational therapists with administering treatments and procedures to patients. OT aides generally require a high school diploma, while OT assistants require a minimum of an associate鈥檚 degree along with a state-issued license.

Occupational therapists, on the other hand, can perform the duties of both occupational therapy aides and assistants because they undergo more education and specialized training, typically through a master鈥檚 degree program. This allows them to develop treatment plans, evaluate patient progress, and provide comprehensive services independently of aides and assistants.

Occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants work together to carry out the treatment plans that occupational therapists develop, making recovery a collaborative effort.

What is Nursing?

Much like the field of occupational therapy, there鈥檚 a wide range of paths you can take in the field of nursing. Nurses play a central role in patient care as they often serve as the primary point of contact for most patients.

Some common paths for nurses include certified nurse assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).

Similar to occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants, registered nurses work under the supervision of other nurse professionals, typically under a nurse practitioner. However, while both registered nurses and nurse practitioners work to oversee patient health and treat patient needs, only nurse practitioners can develop treatment plans and diagnose acute illnesses.

Nurses can also take on more advanced nursing roles by pursuing different specializations, such as adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP) or nurse leadership.

Occupational Therapy and Nursing: Job Roles and Education

On paper, occupational therapy and nursing may appear as distinct professions鈥攂oth with their own unique responsibilities, educational requirements, and scope of practice. However, because occupational therapy centers around the care of others, it often overlaps with nursing through its shared emphasis on patient advocacy, emotional support, and teamwork.

The sections below outline the key aspects of each career to help give you a clear understanding of their responsibilities and educational requirements.

Job Responsibilities for Occupational Therapists

For occupational therapists, every aspect of their job is dedicated to helping patients regain the skills needed to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. As a result, they鈥檙e focused on a targeted niche in healthcare.

They work with individuals facing physical, mental, or emotional challenges due to injuries, illnesses, or disabilities. While they collaborate with doctors and other healthcare providers, occupational therapists take the lead in designing and guiding personalized treatment plans.

Here鈥檚 a closer look at :

  • Evaluate patients to assess their needs and determine the best path to recovery.
  • Empower patients to navigate daily challenges, from self-care to social reintegration.
  • Develop personalized treatment plans focused on helping patients achieve specific goals.
  • Guide patients through therapeutic activities to improve physical, cognitive, or emotional skills.
  • Teach patients how to use adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, grab bars, or hearing aids.
  • Oversee occupational therapy assistants and aides to ensure treatment plans are properly carried out.
  • Educate family members and caregivers on strategies to support the patient鈥檚 recovery and promote independence.

Job Responsibilities for Nurses

Nurses are healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care, monitor health conditions, and make sure that treatments are carried out safely and correctly. They typically work across a large , and their responsibilities can vary depending on not only their educational background but also the department in which they work.

Similar to occupational therapists, they collaborate with teams to deliver exceptional care and ensure the well-being of their patients.

Here鈥檚 a closer look at a few of the :

  • Perform diagnostic tests and assist with interpreting results to guide treatment decisions.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families during challenging or stressful situations.
  • Monitor patient health and record symptoms to track changes and report concerns to the care team.
  • Record and maintain medical histories to ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation.
  • Respond to emergencies by providing life-saving interventions, such as CPR or stabilizing care.
  • Educate patients and their families about their injuries, illnesses, recovery plans, and preventive care.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess patient needs and develop effective care plans.
  • Administer medications and treatments prescribed by doctors to manage pain, treat conditions, and support recovery.

Education Requirements for Occupational Therapists

To become an occupational therapist, you鈥檒l need a master鈥檚 degree in occupational therapy, which generally includes advanced training in patient care and treatment planning. Before enrolling in a master鈥檚 program, you must complete a bachelor鈥檚 degree in a related field, such as biology or health sciences.

However, some Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs, like 奥颁鲍鈥檚 program offered at the Center for Graduate Studies in Los Angeles, don鈥檛 require you to hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree. The program can be completed in as little as 24 months and involves a combination of on-campus instruction and online learning.

If you don鈥檛 hold a bachelor鈥檚, you can qualify for the MSOT program if you meet these requirements:

  • An active occupational therapy assistant license
  • 1 year of work experience as an occupational therapy assistant
  • 3.0 GPA on prerequisite courses from an accredited university within the last ten years

Courses you鈥檒l take in a Master of Occupational Therapy program will cover topics like anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation techniques, how to provide patient care, neuroscience for occupational therapy, and how to perform occupational therapy assessments for children and adults.

Both the academic coursework and hands-on components conducted through fieldwork in the program also prepare you to pass the , which is required to practice as a registered occupational therapist.

Education Requirements for Nurses

Registered nurses typically earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing (BSN) or an associate degree in nursing (ADN). Many healthcare organizations prefer nurses with a BSN, while in some cases, it鈥檚 .

Nursing programs combine clinical training and theoretical knowledge to help prepare students for direct patient care and specialized roles while also equipping them with the knowledge and experience needed to pass their licensure exams.

Common courses you鈥檒l take in a BSN program include topics like pharmacology, pathophysiology, disaster management, and fundamentals of nursing practice.

Is Occupational Therapy or Nursing Right For Me?

Choosing between occupational therapy and nursing is a personal decision that depends on your interests, goals, and the type of patient involvement you prefer. Take the time to reflect on a few of these questions to determine which path aligns with your goals:

  • What kind of impact do I want to have on patients鈥 lives?
  • How much time and energy am I willing to invest in my education and career development?
  • Am I more interested in hands-on medical care or guiding patients toward greater independence?
  • What type of environment do I see myself working in (e.g., hospitals, schools, clinics, or rehabilitation centers)?

Occupational therapy and nursing might be ideal career paths for you if you identify with some of the following skills or traits:

  • Are patient, empathetic, and driven to improve the quality of life of others.
  • Care about helping people restore independence and build confidence.
  • Are highly adaptable and comfortable working with diverse populations in different settings.
  • Have excellent communication skills when working with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Enjoy solving problems and coming up with creative ways to help people achieve their goals through personalized care plans.

If you find meaning in empowering others through daily activities and building their independence, occupational therapy may be your calling.

In fact, occupational therapy can be ideal for those who have a passion for patient care but seek additional career opportunities in areas like rehabilitation or personalized treatment planning. You’ll also get more one-on-one time with patients as an occupational therapist, allowing you to focus deeply on their individual needs and goals for recovery.

Patient Safety Awareness Week: How WCU BSN Students Develop the Skills to Protect Patients

Patient safety is the foundation of high-quality healthcare. Every year, Patient Safety Awareness Week, led by the , highlights the importance of preventing medical errors, improving communication, and fostering a culture of safety in healthcare settings.

WCU takes this commitment seriously by helping to equip our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students with the essential hard and soft skills needed to prioritize patient safety in every clinical encounter.

What is Patient Safety Awareness Week?

Patient Safety Awareness Week 鈥 an annual recognition event that occurs in March 鈥 is a dedicated time to focus on reducing preventable harm in healthcare. From medication safety to teamwork strategies, the week serves as a reminder that patient safety is a shared responsibility among healthcare professionals, educators, and students alike.

According to the , improving patient safety requires a combination of:

  • Strong communication and teamwork
  • Evidence-based clinical practices
  • A proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks

WCU incorporates these principles into our BSN curriculum, helping to ensure students graduate with the confidence and expertise to provide safe, effective patient care.

How 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN Program Enhances Patient Safety Skills

Communication & Teamwork: The Foundation of Safe Care

Clear, effective communication is essential in preventing errors and improving patient outcomes. Dr. Pamela Sandvig, Dean, Post-Licensure Nursing at WCU, emphasizes how communication and teamwork are integrated into our program:

鈥淧atient safety is at the core of quality healthcare, and developing both interpersonal and technical competencies necessary to ensure it is a cornerstone of our BSN program. Through a focus on communication and teamwork, informed by evidence-based frameworks like , students learn how to collaborate effectively in complex clinical environments. These interpersonal skills are complemented by rigorous training in technical skills such as accurate assessment, safe medication administration, and the use of technology to reduce errors. Together, these competencies prepare our graduates to be leaders in fostering a culture of safety and excellence in patient care.鈥

Clinical Precision: Hard Skills That Save Lives

Beyond communication, technical competencies are critical in ensuring patient safety. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN students receive hands-on training in:

  • Safe medication administration
  • Patient assessments and early recognition of deterioration
  • Electronic health records and clinical decision support tools
  • Infection prevention and control measures

This training helps students develop clinical precision, reducing the risk of errors and enhancing patient outcomes.

Building a Culture of Safety

Patient safety is more than just following protocols 鈥 it鈥檚 about cultivating a mindset that prioritizes patient well-being at all times. Dr. Chiarina Piazza, Dean of the College of Nursing and California Program Director, shares:

鈥淚 hope our BSN students leave our program with a deep understanding that patient safety isn鈥檛 just about protocols 鈥 it鈥檚 about attitude and action. My goal is for them to develop the confidence to speak up in a team, the skill to catch potential errors, and the mindset to always prioritize safe, compassionate care. When communication and clinical precision come together, the impact on patient lives is extraordinary.鈥

Preparing Future Nurses to Lead in Patient Safety

Patient safety is an ongoing effort, and WCU is committed to preparing the next generation of nurses to meet this challenge. Through innovative training, evidence-based frameworks, and a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN graduates can enter the workforce ready to make a difference in the lives of their patients.

In recognizing Patient Safety Awareness Week, WCU celebrates the dedication of our students, faculty, and healthcare professionals who work to create safer healthcare environments for all.

With 11 years at 国产主播鈥檚 Orange County campus, Sunil has been a guiding force for countless nursing students, helping them navigate their academic and professional journeys.

A Global Nursing Career

Sunil鈥檚 path to teaching was paved with hands-on experience across the globe. WCU-Ontario BSN graduate gives speech during pinning ceremonty

At 国产主播鈥檚 January 2025 nursing pinning, student speaker Valerie A. took the stage with a message that resonated deeply with her fellow graduates: Remember your why.

Reflecting on the challenges they faced 鈥 rigorous exams, sleepless nights, and the weight of clinical responsibilities 鈥 Valerie acknowledged the perseverance that brought each student to this moment. But beyond academic struggles, she urged her peers to look inward and recall the deeper reason they chose this path in the first place.

For Valerie, that moment of clarity came in January 2019 when she stepped into an overcrowded emergency room for the first time.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, where she performed CPR on 839 patients. What she saw 鈥 the patients sitting on floors with oxygen tanks, isolation tents overflowing, and nurses crying in supply rooms on their nonexistent breaks 鈥 left an indelible mark. These experiences, she said, put life鈥檚 everyday anxieties into perspective and ignited a calling that would change the trajectory of her life.聽

“I walked into that ER as a blank slate, unsure of how this experience was going to change me, but within a few months, I found myself applying to 国产主播 on a path that would change the trajectory of my life forever,” she said.

Now, as she and her classmates step into the next phase of their careers, Valerie acknowledged that new challenges await. Nursing is more than a job 鈥 it is a profound responsibility. They will witness both the fragility of life and the joy of bringing new life into the world.

“We’re going to experience a new form of anxiety that will challenge our innermost tenacity. You may have the unimaginable duty to hold somebody’s hand in their final moments. You may also witness the joy of bringing a new life into the world, but ultimately, you will share in the raw vulnerability that patients experience when they walk into those acute care settings,” Valerie said. “I want you all to remember we’ve been chosen for this honor, and I want you all to remember your ‘why.’ We’re about to have a profound impact on the people around us, and it is our insatiable appetite to help others that have shaped us into the nurses who sit here today.”

Valerie closed her address with gratitude 鈥 thanking her family, professors, and fellow students for their support throughout the journey. And as she looked ahead to the future, she left her peers with a powerful reminder:

“We all had a dream stepping through the doors of 国产主播. Now, we鈥檝e achieved the ultimate accomplishment. Congratulations, January 2025 cohort 鈥 I can鈥檛 wait to see you all in the clinical setting.”
