Questions for New Preceptors

What is the role of a nurse practitioner preceptor?

An preceptor provides hands-on clinical instruction and supervision to nurse practitioner students, acting as a role model and mentor. They offer feedback, evaluate student performance, and ensure patient safety during student interactions.

Who can precept for the nurse practitioner programs at 国产主播?

Depending on the nurse practitioner program of study, students may precept with a nurse practitioner, physician or licensed therapy provider who meets the credentialing requirements in the state where the clinical hours will be completed. Depending on the program track, there may be additional specific criteria pertaining to the population focus.

What are the benefits of being a preceptor?

Preceptors can enhance their own clinical skills, stay updated with the latest research through students, and experience personal and professional growth. Precepting also contributes to state licensure renewal and national certification.

How will I receive credit for my precepting hours?

At the end of each term, you will receive a certificate documenting the hours you spent precepting.

What support will I receive from faculty?

Faculty collaborate throughout the term with preceptors to ensure alignment of clinical experiences with academic objectives. They provide guidance, support, and resources to assist you in your role as a preceptor.

How do I handle a situation where a student is not performing well?

Provide constructive feedback and document specific areas for improvement. Communicate any concerns with the assigned faculty member promptly to address the situation collaboratively.

What should I do if I need to take a leave of absence or can no longer precept?

Notify the student and the faculty member as soon as possible to allow for adjustments and ensure continuity of the student’s clinical education. Preceptors are under no obligation to precept every term. We encourage preceptors to find the balance that works for them and their practice.

Can I set specific goals and expectations for my student?

Yes, setting clear goals and expectations helps guide the student’s learning experience and ensures they meet the required competencies.

How can I provide feedback to WCU about my experience as a preceptor?

We encourage preceptors to share their feedback through surveys, direct communication with faculty, and participation in preceptor meetings or forums.

What should I do if I encounter a conflict with a student?

Address the conflict professionally and try to resolve it directly with the student. If the issue persists, involve the faculty member to mediate and find a resolution.

Can I precept more than one student at a time?

This depends on the policies of the program and your capacity to effectively supervise and teach multiple students. Accreditation guidelines require that no more than two students be precepted at the clinical site on any given clinic office day or hospital shift.

For further questions or additional information, please contact the faculty member assigned to your student or email us at WCUPreceptorSupport@WestCoastUniversity.edu.

  • Patient Safety: Ensure patient safety and quality care during student-patient interactions.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of student progress and performance. Verify student clinical hours.

Faculty Roles and Responsibilities

  • Student Support: Provide academic guidance and support to students.
  • Assessment: Develop and implement methods for assessing student progress and clinical competence.
  • Collaboration with Preceptors: Coordinate with clinical preceptors to align clinical experiences with academic learning objectives.
  • Evaluation: Conduct regular evaluations of both student performance and preceptor effectiveness.

Student Roles and Responsibilities

  • Professional Behavior: Exhibit professionalism in all clinical and academic settings.
  • Active Learning: Engage actively in the learning process, both in the classroom and in clinical settings.
  • Preparation: Come prepared for clinical experiences and classroom activities.
  • Feedback Utilization: Use feedback from preceptors and faculty to improve clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Patient Safety: Prioritize patient safety and provide high-quality care under supervision.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of clinical experiences and patient care.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with patients, preceptors, faculty, and the healthcare team.
  • Self-Assessment: Continuously self-assess to identify areas for improvement and seek additional learning opportunities.

How Does a BSN Enhance Your Nursing Career?

In the evolving field of healthcare, adaptable and confident nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are essential 鈥 not only for their patients but also for the effective functioning of entire organizations. They serve as role models, drive advancements across patient care, and elevate nursing standards.

Many healthcare organizations prefer nurses with a BSN, while in some cases, it鈥檚 . And it鈥檚 reflected in the broader preferences of healthcare hiring trends nationwide.

Building on a solid undergraduate foundation from an accredited institution can be a great stepping stone for specialized post-master’s certifications.

The Value of a BSN for Career Growth

As a nurse, you shape the future of healthcare, and earning a BSN deepens your ability to provide care that鈥檚 both comprehensive and compassionate. Moreover, a BSN expands your understanding of advanced nursing concepts and evidence-based practices while also preparing you for leadership roles and specialized clinical positions.

For registered nurses aspiring to step into these leadership roles, choosing an RN to BSN program can be beneficial. Since BSN programs strengthen clinical knowledge and provide more hands-on experience, they set the stage for opportunities to develop a lifelong network 鈥 connecting you with peers, mentors, and industry professionals who can support your career growth. This combination of enhanced skills and professional connections are major components in advancing your career.

BSN Nurses Can Take on Leadership Roles

A BSN opens doors to various leadership positions as well as advanced clinical roles in nursing, each offering distinct growth opportunities. One such leadership role is a clinical nurse manager.

For RNs aiming to take on more responsibilities, stepping into a clinical nurse manager role can be a rewarding choice. This position combines clinical expertise with leadership duties, allowing you to guide and support nursing staff while ensuring high standards of patient care.

Clinical nurse managers are vital in shaping departmental workflow, including developing team schedules and resolving conflict. Earning a BSN is often a prerequisite for this position, and an RN to BSN program is an excellent pathway to gain the qualifications needed to move into this role.

What Skills Do You Develop Through an RN to BSN Program?

Effective nurses are shaped by a combination of knowledge and advanced skills. Adaptability is one of the most crucial traits, especially in the face of evolving healthcare policies and technologies. The ability to navigate changes while upholding high standards of patient care is what sets exceptional nurses apart.

Enrolling in an RN to BSN program not only strengthens clinical expertise but also enhances the following skills:

  • Advanced clinical comprehension
  • Critical thinking
  • Cultural competence
  • Leadership abilities
  • Ethical judgment
  • Understanding of health policy
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Resilience in the face of challenges

Whether you’re managing a nursing team, educating future nurses, or overseeing healthcare operations, these competencies form the foundation of advanced nursing roles. By pursuing a BSN, you鈥檙e not just tacking on credentials 鈥 you鈥檙e expanding a skill set to pursue more impactful positions in the field of nursing.

Choosing the Right RN to BSN Program

Before you commit to an RN to BSN program, there are a few things you need to determine:

  • Verify Accreditation: Always ensure that the program you choose is accredited. Accreditation is a measure of quality of your program and its recognition by potential healthcare employers.
  • Check Transfer Credits Policy: Determine whether the program accepts transfer credits from your previous nursing education to build on your earlier coursework.
  • Evaluate the Program Format: Consider if an entirely in-person or hybrid format would best suit your needs. Some RN to BSN programs allow you to complete your courses fully online and complete clinicals in person, making it easier to balance your personal responsibilities.

Take the Next Step: Start Your RN to BSN Journey at WCU

Long before he started the WCU Online Program to pursue his MSN and become an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Jerome A. had a story to tell. Born and raised in the Philippines, the 37-year-old rose to fame by competing in the seventh season of Pinoy Big Brother, the Philippine version of the popular Big Brother franchise. While on the show in 2016, Jerome decided to do something bold and come out as gay on national television.

鈥淚 did that because I want young people in my country to see that there鈥檚 nothing wrong with being gay or lesbian or whoever you are,鈥 Jerome said. 鈥淎t least one young gay person watching you will have the courage to do the same thing because they know they can participate in the community and make a big change.鈥

Coming out, especially to the entire country, was not something Jerome took lightly. His parents didn鈥檛 even know he was gay, so the announcement came as a surprise to everyone around him.

鈥淚t was tough. I kind of sensed that after this, people were going to be like, 鈥極h my god! We know you鈥檙e gay!鈥 I disregarded all of that information. I told myself, You鈥檙e not doing it because of those people. You鈥檙e not doing it because of the people around you. You鈥檙e doing it because you want to free yourself. It was a very memorable moment.鈥

After Jerome left the Big Brother house, he wasn鈥檛 sure how he鈥檇 be received by the public.

鈥淲hen I was outside after the show, I kind of reviewed all the information that came out. It was everywhere! It was on the news, on social media, and on Google. It was crazy,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut that day was the day that I saw myself. That鈥檚 the day I considered myself being fully happy.鈥

With this newfound happiness, Jerome found the ambition to pursue something he鈥檇 always wanted: his MSN.

鈥淚 asked myself, after coming out as a gay person: What鈥檚 next? How are you going to contribute? Because we don鈥檛 live only for ourselves. If you have something to share, you have to talk. If you have something to contribute, you have to work… to pursue my life鈥檚 purpose. This was a good start.鈥

Since Jerome鈥檚 confidence and self-love now flow out abundantly, it鈥檚 easy for him to imagine how he might use his experience to help other young LGBTQ+ people in the healthcare space and beyond.

鈥淚 pursued a nurse practitioner career because I want to specialize in STIs. I want to serve as an advocate for LGBTQ+ people and be someone who is there to provide information,鈥 he said. 鈥淪ometimes, people don鈥檛 open up about their sexual history. They don鈥檛 open up about their sexual encounters. Gay men tend to keep some information to themselves because they鈥檙e scared. I want to help the community.鈥

When asked about what advice he鈥檇 give to queer youth in his position, Jerome emphasized the importance of knowing when the time is right.

鈥淒o not push if you feel like it鈥檚 not the time yet. You always need to have a support system. You always need to consider what will make you happy at the end of the day,鈥 he said.

Ultimately, Jerome鈥檚 message to the world is one of inclusivity and love, something he carries into his practice and beyond: 鈥淲hether you are male, female, gay, lesbian 鈥 we are all the same.鈥

Briana Y. always had a passion for the medical field, but it was a personal family crisis during her nursing journey that truly solidified her path.

Having worked in a hospital environment for nearly six years, Briana was initially drawn to 国产主播 by both personal connections and practical considerations.

鈥淚 had a couple of friends who had applied to West Coast and went through the BSN program, and they loved it,鈥 she explained.

The flexible evening and weekend schedule at WCU was also a perfect fit for her, allowing her to balance full-time work as an administrative assistant at a surgery center with her studies.听

Although her administrative role at the center has shifted to a work-from-home setup, her past hands-on experiences in various settings there fueled her desire to transition from clerical tasks to direct patient care.

鈥淚 loved helping people and wanted to be by their side, holding their hand through the hard times and cheering them on during the good times,鈥 she said.听

Unfortunately, after enrolling at WCU, Briana learned her grandfather was battling stage four lung cancer and her grandmother was facing stage three colon cancer. During their cancer treatment, Briana found herself deeply moved by the nurses who went “above and beyond” in their care.

鈥淪eeing the nurses, how they treated (my grandfather) 鈥 really inspired me. It made me want to be the best person I could be for people, patients going through similar things, and their families as well,鈥 she said.

Currently, Briana is immersed in her Med-Surg 2 course and said she finds the material both challenging and captivating. She鈥檚 exploring her interests across different specialties but is particularly drawn to the dynamic environment of Med-Surg or the Emergency Room.

鈥淭he issue with me is that I find interest in everything,鈥 she said, highlighting her enthusiasm for diverse medical fields.

Briana attributes her success to effective time management and the supportive resources at WCU, including the peer-assisted learning (PAL) tutoring program. As a PAL tutor herself, she enjoys helping her peers succeed, reinforcing her own knowledge in the process.

“PAL tutors are amazing,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey really want to help the students and help them as best as they possibly can.鈥

Looking ahead, Briana feels well-prepared for her future. Her journey at WCU has not only equipped her with essential medical knowledge but also nurtured her compassionate spirit, ensuring she鈥檚 ready to make a meaningful impact in the nursing profession.

鈥淚 feel that once I finish this program, I will be able to take the NCLEX with no issue,鈥 she said.

MSOT - 24months | OTD - 32months

Occupational therapy (OT) is a rewarding healthcare profession that focuses on helping people of all ages participate in the activities that are important to them. Whether it鈥檚 a child struggling with fine motor skills, an adult recovering from a stroke, or an elderly person facing challenges with daily living, occupational therapists work to improve their clients鈥 quality of life by giving them the physical, emotional, and social skills needed to succeed.

If you鈥檙e passionate about helping others achieve their full potential and making a positive impact in your community, studying occupational therapy through an MSOT or OTD program might be the perfect career path for you.

You might be wondering how long occupational therapy school is. How many years will you have to devote to your education before you can practice? This can vary broadly. In general, an OT degree will typically take between two and four years to complete. However, the specific length of your degree will depend on the school you choose as well as whether you opt for a master鈥檚 or doctorate degree. Other factors to consider include whether you already have a bachelor鈥檚 degree and whether you need to complete prerequisites before starting.

Keep reading to get a better estimate of just how long it could take you to become an occupational therapist!

Choosing Your Path: MSOT vs. OTD

A Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) and an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) are both advanced degrees that qualify individuals for their OT licensure exam. However, they differ in their scope, depth, and the type of roles they prepare graduates for.

MSOT: A Foundation for Practice

An MSOT primarily prepares graduates for direct patient care in various settings. According to the , occupational therapists often work in hospitals, OT offices, schools, home health services, or nursing care facilities. A master鈥檚 degree program usually take 2 to 3 years to complete and emphasizes clinical skills, assessment techniques, and evidence-based practice. You can view our MSOT curriculum online.

OTD: A Scholarly Deep Dive

While an OTD also prepares graduates for clinical practice, a doctorate provides more in-depth preparation for scholarship and research. It typically provides a broader preparation for students who eventually want to become leaders, educators, or researchers in the field of OT. Check out the OTD curriculum.

Additionally, an OTD degree includes a capstone project that serves as a culminating experience, enabling students to take ownership of a large project through the phases of research, development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination. Read more about capstone projects at WCU.

How Long Is Occupational Therapy School at WCU

国产主播 offers both MSOT and OTD degrees. Here is a comparison of the two programs that can help you understand which option is right for you.

Other Factors to Consider

In addition to program length, there are a few other factors that might affect how long it takes you to become a licensed occupational therapist. While researching programs, consider the following:

  • Prior Education and Prerequisites
Do you meet all requirements in order to start the program right away? If you don鈥檛, you might need to take some courses before you can start your OT degree. Many programs will require a 4-year bachelor鈥檚 degree. Common majors that prepare students for an OT education include kinesiology, biology, or psychology. However, regardless of your major, you will have to ensure you鈥檝e completed any prerequisite courses. For example, if you wanted to apply to 奥颁鲍鈥檚 MSOT program, you would have to ensure you鈥檝e taken classes in areas such as human anatomy, physiology, and human development. You can find all our prerequisites online.
  • Full-Time vs. Part-Time Schedules
Some OT programs will allow you to choose between being a full-time or part-time student. Part-time students will typically have a lighter course load per term, spreading out necessary coursework over a longer period of time. This is a great option if you work or juggle different responsibilities. However, it also extends the amount of time you need to complete your degree.
  • Routes for Students Without Bachelor鈥檚 Degrees
While OT programs typically require a bachelor鈥檚 degree, some schools offer routes for students who do not have an undergraduate degree. For example, some schools combine a bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 into one program. This could be a 6-year program that starts with bachelor-level classes and immediately segues into graduate courses. At 国产主播, we offer a pathway for occupational therapy assistants to earn their master鈥檚 degree without having to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree first. This allows students in the OT field to leverage their experience and pursue their education.

Breaking Down Your OT Degree

Now that you know about how long you鈥檒l be in school, you should know what you鈥檒l be doing during those years. Occupational therapy school might be challenging, but it鈥檚 also a rewarding and fulfilling experienced that鈥檚 focused on helping you become a capable and compassionate healthcare practitioner.

Here鈥檚 what you can expect from your WCU education:

  • Didactic Coursework
Study the theory and science behind occupational therapy in a traditional classroom setting. This includes 1-2 days per week of online classes for flexibility.
  • Simulation Experiences
Practice skills and gain confidence in a safe environment. Our campus at the Center for Graduate Studies includes a simulation center with an apartment set-up similar to what you鈥檒l encounter on the job.
  • Advanced Fieldwork Experiences
Both our MSOT and OTD programs include 24 credits of Fieldwork Level II experience to provide real-life experience.

After Graduation: One Final Step

Even after you complete your OT degree, you have one vital step left before you become an occupational therapist: Getting your license!

Graduates of 奥颁鲍鈥檚 OT programs are eligible to sit for the national certification exam.

The (NBCOT) administers the exam to certify occupational therapists, ensuring that practitioners meet the knowledge standards needed to provide quality care for clients. Most states require licensure to practice, and state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification exam. , students report spending about 6 weeks studying and preparing for the exam.

Additionally, maintaining your occupational therapist license might involve keeping up with your education, including staying aware of emerging trends and research. This is done through Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The (AOTA) provides some helpful information about CEUs.

OTD vs. Other Healthcare Fields

You might also be wondering how long is occupational therapy school in comparison to other healthcare fields. Program lengths can vary widely from one university to the other. As a quick guide, here are the different program lengths for some of the graduate healthcare degrees offered at 国产主播.

We talked to BSN graduates from four campuses in three states about their advice to future nursing students. The replies varied but had one common theme: When you鈥檙e ready to be a nurse, don鈥檛 let anything stop you — including yourself.听

Check out what our alumni had to say:

Do your homework.

鈥淭ake your time. Do your research. Carefully look for the things that matter most to you, meaning class sizes, the times that they have availability, and their flexibility to work with your schedule and your life. Just because we go to school doesn’t mean we can put the rest of our life on pause. Having that option of flexibility and a school that works with you, and professors that are willing to give you resources and help you, is really the No. 1 priority.鈥 — Tiffany C., WCU-Miami BSN 鈥23

—-

When in doubt, dive in 鈥 headfirst.

鈥淚f you’re on the fence about it, I say do it because you’re going to talk yourself out of it. Even if it’s something you’ve wanted your entire life, you’re going to end up talking yourself out. So, if you’re ready and you have the means to do it, just jump in headfirst. You won’t regret it.鈥 — Lauren A., WCU-Los Angeles BSN 鈥22

—-

You鈥檙e not alone.

鈥淯tilize all the resources that you have. We have students tutoring other students; we have some of our professors tutoring for their classes. Go to every resource that is offered to you.鈥 — Haneefah M., WCU-Ontario BSN 鈥23

—

Don鈥檛 wait to get help.

鈥淯se their resources. 国产主播 provides you with tons of resources. There鈥檚 PAL tutoring, there鈥檚 your professors. Use all your resources early. Don鈥檛 wait until it鈥檚 like Week 5 or Week 6.鈥 — Esther N., WCU-Texas BSN 鈥24

—听

Don鈥檛 give up.听

鈥淪tick it out. It’s difficult while you’re here, but the end result is just so worth it. Just find things that bring you joy in the little moments. You need that to make it through because it is a tough road.鈥 — Shelby L., WCU-Los Angeles BSN 鈥17

—-

You will find the right fit.

鈥淕o for it. Don’t think about it, don’t dwell on it — especially if you’re at a point in your life where you want to be in the healthcare field and you just don’t know where you’ll fit in. I think nursing is a beautiful career because you don’t necessarily have to be in a hospital setting. You don’t have to be in a clinical setting. You can pretty much do whatever you want.鈥 — Melani G, WCU-Miami BSN 鈥20

—-

It鈥檚 worth it.

鈥淣othing in life is easy that is worth it. If it is worth it, most likely, you’re going to have to put some effort into it, some sweat and some tears. That’s good — it sharpens you.鈥 — Monica B., WCU-Miami BSN 鈥17
