This rare and unusual presentation, triggered by a combination of psychiatric medications, underscored the need for vigilant monitoring of adverse effects. Their work, soon to be published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, highlighted the importance of individualized treatment approaches and thorough patient assessment in managing complex cases, contributing valuable insights to the field of psychiatric pharmacy.

Taking time to ensure patients are comfortable with their medication isn鈥檛 something Janna M. had to be taught as a 国产主播 doctor of pharmacy student. That was a lesson she learned on her own a long time ago.

As a child, her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer while visiting from Lebanon and ended up staying with Janna’s family in California for five years. During hospital visits, Janna noticed how the pharmacist would take extra care to make sure her grandmother 鈥 who speaks only Arabic 鈥 knew precisely what was going on with her care. 聽

鈥淪he would really take the time to explain things that the other healthcare professionals couldn’t just because there was that language barrier,鈥 Janna said. 鈥淚 saw the compassion behind that pharmacist, and that really stuck with me, so I became a (pharmacy technician) and then was encouraged to come back to school to become a pharmacist.鈥

Born and raised in Burbank, Janna had looked at pharmacy schools across the country before picking 国产主播, which was located just a few miles from her home. Janna said she liked how engaged the professors were in her educational journey and appreciated WCU鈥檚 accelerated program.

鈥淲e are not only a three-year program, but we are also a hybrid as well, so we have some students that aren’t even in state and just come in one week during the semester. It really is flexible for those students, maybe some moms at home that they’ve always wanted to go back to school, but it couldn’t fit with their busy schedules,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ell, now they can do that.鈥

Currently working as a pharmacy intern at a community clinic, Janna said the best part of her day is spending a few extra minutes with patients and seeing how grateful they are, or receiving positive feedback about how she handled a potentially tricky situation.

“That’s kind of like the gratification for the day,” she said, “and I’m like, ‘That’s why I’m here, that’s why I’m doing this.鈥”

Aspiring Pharmacist Need-to-Knows About Licensure Testing

The North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination庐 (狈础笔尝贰齿庐) is the national assessment test taken by graduating pharmacy students. It鈥檚 one of the final requirements you鈥檒l need to complete in order to practice. The test is administered by the , and is designed to evaluate a PharmD graduate鈥檚 readiness to join the workforce.

The test is a six-hour exam with 225 questions, and it鈥檚 graded on a pass-or-fail basis. In this post, we explore some of the most-asked questions about what鈥檚 on the test, how to prepare, and the steps required to take it, so you can sit for the exam with confidence.

Do I need to take the NAPLEX?

In order to practice as a pharmacist, yes. Passing the exam is a standard requirement for licensure. The exam assesses your knowledge and readiness by testing the competencies you need to perform complex duties in this essential healthcare role.

What鈥檚 on the NAPLEX?

The NAPLEX assesses , each allotted a specific percentage of your score. You鈥檒l be tested on the academic knowledge, practiced skills, and professional judgment needed to qualify for licensed pharmacy practice:

  • Area 1 (approximately 18%): Obtaining, accessing and assessing data and patient information
  • Area 2 (approximately 14%): Identifying drug characteristics
  • Area 3 (approximately 35%): Developing and managing treatment plans
  • Area 4 (approximately 14%): Performing calculations
  • Area 5 (approximately 11%): Compounding, dispensing, administering, and delivery systems
  • Area 6 (approximately 7%): Safety and quality of medical-use systems

Each of these areas will cover a range of relevant testing points. Review these areas thoroughly to help you make a game plan to focus your topics of study.

How to Prepare for the NAPLEX

  9. Receive your Pass or Fail exam results within 14 days.

What if I don鈥檛 pass?

The NAPLEX is graded Pass or Fail. In the event you fail the exam, you are permitted to retake the test up to five times.

What鈥檚 the Difference Between the NAPLEX and the MPJE?

The Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination庐 (MPJE庐) is another test usually taken by graduating PharmD students to obtain licensure. While the NAPLEX focuses on general practice knowledge, . You鈥檒l have to take the MPJE in order to get your state license or to transfer your license to an alternate state if you relocate. In most cases, you鈥檒l need to take and pass both the NAPLEX and the MPJE to begin practice.

Got Exam Anxiety?

You鈥檙e not alone. Pre-exam jitters are common, but you don鈥檛 have to let them hold you back. The best way to face your pass-or-fail fears is to face them in advance. Set yourself up for success by curating a mindful study space, learning strategies for effective note-taking and information retention, and taking care of yourself. WCU Students Find Love While Earning Their PharmD Degrees

Alumni Spotlight: Hayk C. and Christine S.

Hayk C. and Christine S. both come from families with a background in medicine. In 2015, they each applied to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at 国产主播. Four years later, they graduated and began careers at different pharmacies in their community. Soon thereafter, in November 2021, they tied the knot.

As they settle into married life and their new careers, they recall how their relationship began during their time at WCU.

Christine said that when she met Hayk, he seemed mysterious and she wanted to learn his story. Hayk said he was a 鈥済o getter鈥 by making the first move to get to know Christine during their first week of school.

鈥淒uring orientation, she caught my eye,鈥 Hayk said. 鈥淲e started talking on the side and became friends. As we got to know each other more鈥 we realized we really liked each other and it took off from there.鈥

Hayk added that their four-year PharmD program helped solidify their relationship. The couple got to know one another during early morning and post-class review sessions.

鈥淲e would meet to study together after school and it slowly became something more,鈥 Christine said. Soon, the pharmacy students were seeing each other nearly every day while working toward their shared goal of becoming pharmacists.

鈥淢ost of the time we saw each other more than our family members,鈥 Hayk said.

A Tight-Knit Community in the PharmD Program

Apart from their own relationship, they were also part of their small WCU class. With a cohort of around 60 students, Hayk said they formed small study groups to test one another, write study notes, and put their learning into practice. Christine called it a 鈥渂ig family.鈥

鈥淲e were very close. Especially since we were such a small class,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e also had a very close relationship with a lot of our professors, which was nice. We would meet with them and we would go over questions if we had trouble with anything.鈥

Although their relationship started during orientation, Hayk said the couple largely kept things private to avoid being the center of attention. However, he noted that one of his favorite memories at WCU was when the relationship became public.

鈥淲e kept it under the heat for a good four years and it was close to the end of us graduating that our classmates and professors caught on,鈥 Hayk said. 鈥淭hey were very happy about it. A lot had a feeling but didn鈥檛 say anything. It made us happy that they were supportive of us being together.鈥

Now as a married couple, Hayk and Christine share that they are proud to be WCU alumni.

鈥淲e are just very grateful we got into the pharmacy program,鈥 Hayk said. 鈥淭he professors helped ease us through the program by always being there for us and helping us out in any way we needed them.鈥

Christine said she continues to uphold the integrity of the profession following her time at WCU.

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e wearing that white coat, you are representing the profession,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou always want to wear it proudly.鈥

She describes her education at WCU鈥檚 School of Pharmacy as being very hands-on.

鈥淚 especially enjoyed the patient case simulation experiences. It allowed us to have very hands-on, practical experience in real-life clinical settings鈥 Those simulation centers also really gave us a sense of understanding where pharmacists fit in the healthcare field.鈥

Another aspect that Jessie loved about her WCU education in the PharmD program was the accessibility of the professors. 鈥淲e had a lot of one-on-one interactions with them. Their office doors were always open,鈥 she said.

One of the reasons Marc chose to pursue a career in pharmacy is because he saw it as a potential way to make a difference.

鈥淚 was surrounded by loved ones who were on a lot of different medications for different conditions, and I felt that if I were to understand better what their medications were for, why they were taking them, I would be able to help them at least manage their conditions,鈥 Marc explained.

He chose 国产主播 because of the one-on-one attention provided.

鈥淥ne of the highlights that attracted me to 国产主播 was the smaller class size,鈥 Marc said of his experience choosing a pharmacy program. 鈥淚t really gave me the opportunity to make some meaningful professional connections.鈥

The history of modern, clinical pharmacy education is a relatively recent one. was offered in 1950 in Southern California as the movement toward a clinical profession separate from physical care delivery took hold. Two people holding hands at the beach

Mersedeh Kolyaei and Matthew Nadybal, who began dating just prior to enrolling at WCU in 2020 and who were married in 2021, are halfway through completion of the four-year PharmD program at 国产主播鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies. When the conversation turns to what鈥檚 next, they may not have it 100% nailed down, but they have certainly narrowed it down.

And that鈥檚 a good thing because there are actually a great many career paths for graduating PharmDs.

That may come as a bit of a surprise to those of us who may have only encountered a pharmacist while picking up a prescription, but there are indeed many career paths for PharmD graduates to choose from, from retail to hospital, from corporate to government, from education to law…

One career path that both Kolyaei and Nadybal have expressed an interest in is becoming an where, after completing a 1-to-2-year residency, they would become part of a team tasked with the complete care of patients with cancer.

This type of PharmD job has particular meaning for Kolyaei who lost her grandmother to cancer, as well as her younger brother Jeffrey, who succumbed to Ewing鈥檚 sarcoma at the age of 21. From that experience, Kolyaei said it鈥檚 鈥渟omething I鈥檝e always wanted to do.鈥

Considering PharmD Career Specialties

The pharmacist鈥檚 role is to select the proper medications and, critically, the dosage amounts. The pharmacist also needs to be able to monitor and track the patient鈥檚 reaction and progress and then to adjust dosages and potentially medications as needed based on their assessments.

The residency option includes multiple potential paths in addition to the oncology track, including areas of pharmacy specialty such as infectious diseases and pediatrics.

Another area of interest for Kolyaei is pharmaceutical law. After completing a two-year program to earn a law degree, she said among her career paths then would be patent or medical malpractice law, or teaching.

For Nadybal, in addition to the residency track, he has an interest in a research-based career and that would include a 1-to-2-year fellowship most likely with a corporate pharmaceutical company working on drug development and/or clinical trials.

So many options and with two years of PharmD program ahead of them. Whatever path they choose, there鈥檚 still time to decide.
