5 Cool Reasons to Go Back to School in the Fall

Whenever fall creeps in, we tend to get that familiar back-to-school feeling. For most of us, it鈥檚 an association: We鈥檝e come to expect each school year to start up right around Labor Day, give or take. And for the grownups among us, maybe that means 测辞耻鈥檙别 going back to school too, either continuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, or considering advancing your education.

We at 国产主播 thought we鈥檇 think beyond tradition and ask ourselves why we shift into study mode in autumn. It turns out, there are some intriguing and science-based reasons fall is the optimal time to go back to school 鈥 and they span subjects you might even study there. Here鈥檚 our five top reasons it鈥檚 cool when it gets cool to go back to school.

  1. History of the Autumn School Schedule

To get you in the mood for BTS, a little backgrounder: The most commonly held understanding of the creation of the summer break is that it was built around the agrarian calendar. This is actually false, or at least mostly false. Think about it: The times of year parents needed their children working the fields during the 鈥渇arming economy鈥 were planting season (spring) and harvest season (fall). Not summer. So when it comes to this theory, historians say no.

For 聽 we turn to pre-air-conditioned city life. Before urban dwellers had AC 鈥 and for the poorer among them, also after 鈥 the summer months were unbearable enough that anyone with means would escape to whatever seaside, lakeside, or other retreat brought relief from the heat (and smell) of summer in the city. So schools shut down for summer and reconvened in the fall, when things got a little less sweaty. Eventually, this was adopted in suburban and rural areas too, creating a nationwide standard

  1. Back to School Biology

Let鈥檚 move on to science. When it鈥檚 too hot, you don鈥檛 think as well. Several studies have shown that decision-making and reasoning take a hit in scorching weather. 聽 showed that students performed more poorly on tests when they were taking during hot weather in rooms without air conditioning, and that in un-air-conditioned schools, learning was reduced by 1% per 1 degree Fahrenheit of heat.

So why does heat fizzle your wits? The theory is that it has something to do with glucose. Glucose is used in both decision-making and body-temperature regulation. So when your body needs to use glucose to cool, there鈥檚 less left over for your brain. Fall cooldown means less overheating, so your gray matter doesn鈥檛 have to share as much

  1. Home Economics鈥 Back to School Impact

We鈥檙e talking both macro and micro. We鈥檝e already established a few reasons school鈥檚 out for summer, and for adults 鈥 in particular, parents 鈥 that means several fewer hours a day for their own pursuits, including continuing education. Kids can be a distraction, albeit a delightful one. Try studying between softball games, lunch prep, and tantrums. So for grownups, going back to school in the fall, when the kids do, only makes sense.

Plus, when the kids are in school, it鈥檚 a lot harder to plan a family vacation. Between that, and the economics of the travel industry itself, which relies heavily on the summer season and builds much of its revenue cycle around it, time is money. Plus, who doesn鈥檛 want to trade in their textbooks for a beach read each year?

  1. How Mythology Interprets Fall Learning

How about a little divinity school? Meet , the Hindu goddess of knowledge, wisdom, art, music, speech and learning. And, hey, guess what? Her favorite season is fall. Though her name and iconic depictions vary across sects and languages, Saraswati is commonly illustrated with four arms and holds various objects of symbolism, among them a 鈥減ustaka,鈥 a book symbolizing learning, and a pot of 鈥渟oma,鈥 a drink that infuses knowledge.

Some religious texts credit her with inventing the language of Sanskrit, and of giving writing implements to Ganesh. This goddess is all about bookish inspiration, at just the right time of the year to start soaking up some fresh knowledge. There鈥檚 a little worldly wisdom for you. The more you know鈥

  1. Dendrology: Nature鈥檚 Fall Back to School Schedule

This is the science of trees and wooded plants. Nature鈥檚 dropping hints鈥n the form of leaves. We鈥檒l explain. Autumn鈥檚 mise-en-scene offers up another cue to get back to the books, through the colors of fall foliage. for attention and active participation. Red in particular activates a 鈥渄anger鈥 response that can motivate the brain to achieve rather than fail, galvanizing you to prep for tests.

Even if 测辞耻鈥檙别 not a 鈥渓eaf peeper,鈥 these colors are everywhere come autumn, from fall fashions to Halloween and Thanksgiving decor, so they鈥檒l be all around you to help your brain activate and absorb. Plus, pretty colors, right?

If you鈥檝e read this far, 测辞耻鈥檙别 probably already in BTS mode. Whether 测辞耻鈥檙别 considering taking on an MBA program , ready to take your BSN to an MSN-level degree , or just exploring your options for online study, campus learning, and flexible schedules for working professionals looking to go graduate-level with your credentials, 国产主播 has a wide range of programs so you can enroll in before the first leaf, well, falls.

This year, back-to-school season looks a little different. Instead of picking out brand new backpacks, we鈥檙e investing in more Internet bandwidth.

Online school is a first for most of us, but there are some steps you can take to prepare and give your kids an advantage. If 测辞耻鈥檙别 wondering how to get ready, start with these five simple tips to turn your house into the best classroom it can be.

1. Give Them a Distraction-Free Study Space

It鈥檚 hard to study in the living room when games and toys are in plain sight. Instead of setting up their computers on the first available surface, consider creating a study corner or study room where kids can focus on their classes with minimal distractions. Another way to reduce distractions is to keep the study space free of clutter and stocked with all their needed school supplies.

2. Make Ergonomic Adjustments

Ergonomic furniture can help kids keep a healthier posture while studying. For growing children, adjustable furniture might be worth the investment. However, you don鈥檛 have to buy a whole new desk and chair set in order to create a healthier setup. A rolled-up towel placed behind their lower back can help provide lumbar support. A stepping stool gives them something to place their feet on if they can鈥檛 reach the floor.

3.聽Create a Schedule for Them

When home turns into a classroom, it can be easy to have school time and free time blend together. You can help your kids focus by creating a schedule. Let them know what time they need to be in class, what hours are designated for studying, and when they are allowed to go play instead.

Depending on your kids鈥 needs, a schedule can also help them keep a healthy sleep schedule. Ensuring they get enough sleep can help them perform better during school hours.

4.聽Help Them Burn Off Energy

Kids are meant to play and be active. You can help them concentrate better by building active breaks into their schedules. For example, is there a recess time when they are allowed to go outside? Could you walk or bike around the block during study breaks?

5.聽Make Time for Virtual Playdates

School is about more than just sitting in a classroom 鈥 it鈥檚 also an important time when kids get to play and bond with others not in their immediate family. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of socializing opportunities during online school. Try setting up video chats with close school friends after class or on the weekends.
